Emily Burrows Hornsby, 81, Travis Pioneer, Succumbs
Mrs.
Emily Burrows Hornsby, 81, of Hornsby Bend and 1006 West
22nd Street here, died at her Austin home
Sunday morning. She had been a resident more than 75
years.
Mrs.
Hornsby was the widow of the late Jesse Hornsby who was
the last living grandchild of Reuben Hornsby, first
white settler of Travis County at Hornsby Bend, and the
son of Joseph Hornsby, Texas pioneer and soldier.
Mrs.
Hornsby came to Texas in 1873, landing at Galveston on
April 21. She came to Austin at the age of 5, and her
first home was where the present T. H. Williams Store is
located on Congress Avenue.
Mrs.
Hornsby was hostess at the organization of the first
chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the
Reuben Hornsby Chapter, at Hornsby Bend.
She was a
member of First Methodist Church, a life member of the
Society of Christian Service of the Southwest
Conference, a member of the Eastern Star and was called
the mother of the Street Sunday School Class of the
First Methodist Church.
Survivors
include her daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Mims of Fort Worth
and Mrs. Elizabeth Stafford of Three Rivers; a sister,
Mrs. C. J. Carlson, 306 West 14th Street;
four grandchildren, Jane and Joyce Stafford of Three
Rivers, Dr. J. L. Mims Jr. of San Antonio and Hornsby
Mims of Frankfort, Ind.
The body
is at Hyltin-Manor Funeral Home awaiting completion of
funeral arrangements.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday
at 2:30 p. m. for Mrs. Emily Burrows Hornsby, 81, Travis
County resident for more than 75 years, who died at her
home here Sunday morning.
The Rev. J. Leonard Rea will
officiate. Burial will be in historic Hornsby Cemetery
in Hornsby Bend east of Austin. The body will lie in
state at the Hyltin-Manor Funeral Home until 1:30 p. m.
Tuesday.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs.
Luther Mims Sr….Mrs. R. E. Stafford…two great
grandchildren, J. L. Mims III and Charles Mims, both of
San Antonio.
