Annie Mae Wilbeck Gloeckner

September 20, 1912 - January 16, 2018

Annie Mae Wilbeck Gloeckner, age 105, passed away January 16, 2018 at home in Pierce, Texas surrounded by her loving family.

Annie Mae was born September 20, 1912 to Christian G. and Theresa “Rena” Ustynik Wilbeck at the home place north of Pierce, Texas. She attended grades 1 - 8 in Pierce, either walking the three miles or riding in a horse-drawn wagon. She drove a Model T Ford to El Campo High School, graduating in 1932.

In 1945, Annie Mae married Chester F. Gloeckner after he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy. They lived in Bay City, Texas for 36 years where they raised their two daughters, Renee Gloeckner Smith and Bonnie Gloeckner Johnson.

Annie Mae was active in each church she attended: Pierce Church, First Presbyterian Church of Bay City, and First Presbyterian Church of El Campo. She taught children’s Sunday School in Pierce and in Bay City and was as a lifetime member of the Women of the Church Presbyterian. The family was active in the Bay City 4-H Horse Club. Annie Mae worked with the Girl Scouts for over 15 years as a troop leader and also as the neighborhood chairman for Bay City Girl Scouts. She was a founding member of the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society and authored a reference book “Czechs in Wharton County 1880-1900.” She and Chester were involved with the VFW both in Bay City and El Campo. After Chester retired in 1980, they moved to an 1895 farm house located on the farm where she grew up. Annie Mae immediately got chickens for the newly renovated chicken house and put in a big garden, which she tended until the last year of her life. She loved growing and giving away much of what she grew. Her pickles and dewberry jelly were much sought after, especially by her grandkids. Holidays and special family meals always included a bowl of Annie Mae’s mac and cheese, and her squash casserole or chicken salad sandwiches were always expected at church potlucks, get togethers and family reunions.

When she was 73, Chester encouraged her to take an oil painting class offered to senior citizens at WCJC. That decision started a new hobby for her and she completed over 200 paintings, winning numerous awards at local art shows and exhibits and creating treasured pieces for many people. She also hand-painted greeting and Christmas cards, which she continued to do until the end of her life, sending out over 100 of her Christmas cards recently. She was an active member of the El Campo Art Association since 1984. Annie Mae had a servant’s heart and was always thinking of others. She sent letters and hand-painted cards to many friends just to keep in touch or give encouragement. In anything she was a part of, she could be counted on to do her share and more of whatever was asked of her. She was one who always saw her glass as being half-full rather than half-empty, thanking God in hard times because she figured that it could have been worse. She felt very blessed to be able to continue to live in her own home during the last years of her life and was thankful for her daughter Bonnie living with her and the help of her niece Jean who lived across the road.

Annie Mae enjoyed traveling and did several extensive road trips across the USA. In 1991 and again in 1995 she traveled to Florida and saw the launch of the shuttle Atlantis — quite a amazing sight for someone who grew up in the horse & buggy era. At age 94 she went to Yellowstone by way of Colorado. Annie Mae never flew in an airplane but, at the young age of 95, she took an aerial tour of the Pierce area by ultralight and declared that it must be what eternity looks like.

Annie Mae is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chester; and her brother, Andrew Wilbeck.

She is survived by her daughter, Renee (Rod) Smith; daughter, Bonnie Johnson; 100-year old sister, Minnie Lee Conner; her adored grandchildren, Kelly Jon (Kristin) Smith of San Antonio, TX; Nikki Smith (Brandon) Rapelje of Coos Bay, Oregon; Christian (Vanessa) Johnson of Katy, TX; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Madeleine Mae Smith, Vera Mae Johnson, and Keely Lau; nieces, Jean (Wendell) McAskill, Linda Swanson; nephew, Chris (Deb) Shaw; and numerous cousins, friends and relatives.

Visitation was held Friday, January 19, 2018 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo, TX.

Services were held at First Presbyterian Church in El Campo on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 2 p.m.

Burial followed at Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo, TX.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Bay City; El Campo Art Association, PO Box 1344, El Campo, TX 77437; Texas Czech Heritage & Cultural Center, 250 Fairgrounds Road, La Grange, TX 78945.
