Allenhurst--Funeral services for Leala Abbott, 89, of Allenhurst, will be at 11 a. m., Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at New Horizon Holiness Church with Dr. Charles Robertson Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Allenhurst Cemetery.

Viewing will be from 3 - 8 p. m. Monday in the chapel of Green's Mortuary in Bay City.

Mr. Walter L. Allineice, 61, died August 29 at his residence in Houston. He was born August 1, 1917 in Bay City and was a World War II veteran. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Vivian Allineice, two brothers, John Alineice of Van Vleck, and Dewitt Alineice of Bay City, three aunts, Mrs. Mamie Lou Jackson and Mrs. Frances Lewis of Van Vleck, Mrs. Frances Pettit of Houston, two daughters, Mrs. Doris Stelly of Seattle, Washington and Annie Ruth Jackson of Houston, one grandson, Ralph Jackson of Houston, two sisters, Mrs. Carolyn Griggs of Sweeny, Mrs. Tina Blackmon of Fort Worth. Funeral services are at St. John Baptist Church on Sunday, September 3, 1978, at 2:00 p. m. Rev. O. L. Reynolds will officiate. He was born in Allenhurst , Texas , Thursday, July 24, 1930 , to Lewis Campbell and Hannah Scott Campbell, and passed away Thursday, July 12, 2001 , at UTMB Hospital , Galveston , Texas .

He was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. At the time of his demise, he was employed by Southern Cotton Compress in Galveston County .

Melvin Robert Campbell

GALVESTON —Melvin Robert Campbell, 111, went home to be with the Lord on December 31, 2021.

He was born to Louis Campbell, Sr. and Hannah Scott Campbell in Matagorda County, Texas, on March 22, 1910.

He leaves cherished memories with his son, Robert Campbell (Ruby); step children: Annie Burton, Joyce Gray (AJ) and Jerry Nelson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

There will be a visitation at 11AM, followed by a service celebrating his life at 12:00 PM on Saturday, January 8, 2021, at First Union Baptist Church, with Pastor David L. Everson officiating. Burial will follow at Allenhurst Cemetery in Van Vleck, Texas. This Great Celebration will be a Personal Signature Service under the Professional Guidance of Mr. Norris D. Burkley II who will fulfill his final earthly celebration with great excellence.

Andrew Cartwright

Andrew Cartwright, 83, of Rt. 1, Bay City, died Jan. 3, 1977 in Matagorda General Hospital. He was born Jan. 5, 1893 in Goduis, La. Survivors include, his widow, Mrs. Bessie Cartwright; one daughter, Dorothy Callis and two grandchildren. Services will be held at the Ashwood Union Baptist Church Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. W. M. Mayfield officiating. Burial will be in Allenhurst Cemetery in Matagorda County. Penn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Kennedy


Funeral services for Mildred Kennedy, 77, of Brazoria, will be held 1 p. m. Saturday at Halls Chapel Baptist Church in Brazoria with the Rev. Herman Lewis officiating. Mrs. Kennedy was born Sept. 25, 1915 in Allenhurst to Ike and Amy Scott Stanford and died May 11, 1993 at Angleton-Danbury Hospital in Angleton.

 

She was a member of the Baptist Church.

 

Survivors include a daughter, Esther Mae Hanks of Brazoria; seven sisters, Alice Mae Campbell of Allenhurst, Mary Lee Spencer of LaMarque, Ella Benefield, Elma Temple, Helen Simons, Maggie Tipidoe [Thibodeaux] and Lola Campbell, all of Galveston; four brothers, Wesley Stanford of Tomball, Herbert Campbell, Henry Campbell and Wilson Campbell, all of Galveston; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two god-daughters, Judy Bonner and Opal Hall; and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

Mrs. Kennedy was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Kennedy, and her parents, Ike and Amy Stanford.

 

Pallbearers will be James Spears, Lendon Ward, John Aliniece, Jr., L. C. Wright, Joe Randon and Malcolm Burden. Honorary pallbearers are Ray Kennedy, Patrick Pierce, Leslie Pierce, Eugene Pierce, Kenneth Pierce and Charles Kennedy.

Mr. Miller was born April 16, 1918, to John and Isabell Irving Miller in Blessing and died Dec. 14, 1990, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

 

He was a World War II veteran and a member of the Baptist church.

 

He is survived by his wife, Equilla Miller of Blessing; a son, James Hayes of Blessing; a foster son, Ernest Sheffield; a foster granddaughter, Artiquewa Austin; two foster grandsons, Jerry and Harry of Blessing; five brothers, Roy and John David Miller of Blessing, James Bryant Miller of Texas City, Herman Miller of Houston and Leon Miller of Seattle, Wash.; three sisters, Jessie Revis of Blessing, Ann Gills and Peardee Wright of Houston; 12 nieces; eight nephews; two brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law and a host of other relatives and friends.

Leon Eunice Miller
September 24, 1926 - August 15, 2018

On September 24, 1926 a beautiful blessing was born to John and Isabell Miller. This blessing was an angel from heaven and given the name Leon Eunice Miller. Born in Blessing, Leon was the seventh child to this union.

Leon confessed Christ and was baptized at an early age becoming a member of Free Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Blessing, Texas.

He received his formal education from Clousy Chapel in Blessing, Texas. After finishing his education, he met and married Catherine Nixon. To this union one daughter was born whom they named Carolyn Miller.

He later moved to Seattle, Washington. During World War II he worked for the Merchant Marines, which was a high security job. After retiring from Merchant Marines, he worked for a cleaning service. He went on to open his own cleaning service. He retired at the age of 80.

On August 15, 2018, Leon was called to join his Heavenly Family, parents, John and Isabell Miller; sisters, Cecil LaVern Crawford and Jessie Lee Revis; brothers, Samuel Charles Miller, Ezell Garfield Miller, John David Miller, James Bryant Miller and Herman Lee Miller.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Carolyn Charleston (Lyard) of Seattle, Washington; two sisters, Peardee Oserlee Wright and Ann Elizabeth Gills of Houston, Texas; one brother, Roy Miller (Faye) of Blessing, Texas; a devoted nephew, Billy Revis (Deborah) of Richmond, Texas; A devoted friend, Ira Gordon, Sr. of Bay City, Texas; 6 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Leon Miller passed away August 15, 2018 at St. Luke's, Sugar Land.

He was the son of Isabell and John Miller.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; two sisters; and six brothers.

He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Charleston (Lloyd); one grandson, Craig; two sisters, Peardee and Ann; one brother, Roy (Faye); and a host of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. August 25, 2018 at Free Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Blessing, Texas.

On Tuesday, July 28, 1931 in Van Vleck, Texas a daughter was born to Earnesteen Lola Campbell whom was named Bernice Robinson.  She grew up in the community of her birth and attended public school along with her siblings, family and friends.

At a very early age she united with Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church.  Bernice was strong in her belief in Christ and through her faith, she began to serve as a disciple of Christ.  She served as a door keeper and was faithful until her health failed.  She was a true nurturer by nature, often sharing what she had with so many others.

She united in Matrimony to Joe Prince and to this union one child was born and two were added.

Bernice enjoyed cooking, fishing and all sort of busy work.  Being idol was nothing she cared to do.  Her kind and gentle spirit will always be remembered and her witty way will never be forgotten.

Preceding her in death are her parents, husband, Joe Prince; son, Joe Prince, Jr and sister; Elnora E Cogar

Funeral services for Joe Prince, Jr., 35, of Lane City will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Lane City, Rev. H. R. Marine officiating. Burial will follow at Allenhurst Cemetery in Allenhurst.

Visitation will be Friday until 9 p.m. in the chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, and from 1 until 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Prince was born in Wharton County Oct. 21, 1863 to Joe Prince and Bernice Roberson Prince, and died Tuesday, Nov. 3 at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston.

Prince is survived by his mother, Bernice Prince of Lane City; sisters, Carolyn Davis of Houston, and Betty Walker of Magnet; host of aunts, uncles, nephews, grandmother, Lola Campbell of Hitchcock; as well as other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Joseph Baines, Shelley Lewis, Charles Farris and Carl Pleasant.

Jessie Lee Revis

 

Funeral services for Jessie Lee Revis, 64, of Blessing will be held at 11 a. m. Oct. 3, 1998 at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. L. C. Cunningham, pastor and Rev. Ben Hadden officiating. Interment will follow at Allenhurst Cemetery in Allenhurst. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p. m. Oct. 2 in Green's Mortuary Chapel.

 

Revis was born Nov. 6, 1993 in Blessing to Mr. and Mrs. John Miller. She was one of 11 children. Revis graduated from Hilliard High School in 1951 and is a  retired social worker for Economic Action Committee in Bay City. She was married to Alphonse Revis, Sr. on January 20, 1951.

 

Revis is survived by daughters, Wanda Davis of Bay City, and Catanga Hamlett and Carl of Houston; sons, Billy and Deborah of Richmond, Alphonse Jr., and Ann of Blessing, Ronald Revis of Houston, and Carleto and Tessie of Blessing; sisters, Peardee Wright and Ann Gills of Houston; brothers, Leon Miller and Catherine of Portland, Ore., James Bryant and John David Miller of Texas City, Herman Miller of Houston, and Roy Miller and Faye of Blessing; grandchildren, La Shandla, Arche, Natasha, Altrivice, Sophanya, Lil'Al, Latoya, Sherril, Alan, and Alphonse; great grandchildren, Trenton and Cayle; a devoted friend, Melvin Faniel; special friend, Vernell Davis; and a host of relatives and a family of friends. Mrs. Scott was born July 30, 1897, to Peter and Amy Stanford Scott in Allenhurst, and died March 20, 1985, at Matagorda General Hospital.

 

She was a member of the Evangelist church.

Funeral services for James Joseph Scott, 98, of Bay City , will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000 at Mother Zion Baptist Church , Bay City , with the Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating.

Burial will follow at First Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Allenhurst.

Visitation will be Tuesday until 9 p.m. in the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel.

He was born in Allenhurst , Texas , Sunday, May 25, 1902 , to Nathaniel Scott and Raechel Giles Scott, and passed away Friday, Nov. 3, 2000 , at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City .

Survivors include: four sisters, Ollie Harrison of Galveston, N. B. Greenwood of Merced, Calif., Josie Green of Bay City, and Mathilee Brinkley and John L. Sr. of Van Vleck; one brother, Jimmie Scott, Sr. and Luvella of Bay City; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Leutinant Scott

SCOTT, Leutinant—Funeral Service for Dec. Leutinant Scott at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, Sunday, May 17, 1981, 1:00 pm, Rev. Leroy Beverly, Sr. officiating.

In 1909, March 9, a son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Nathanael Scott which they named Leutinant.  He grew up in Allenhurst.  He went to school in Allenhurst.

In 1941, he united with Miss Rosa Lee Bryant. No children were born.

He confessed Christ at an early age and worked faithfully till the Lord called him home.  He was Superintendent of the Sunday School.  He also was a Deacon and worked in everything that was in the church. Peacefully and happy, he will be remembered for his inspirational prayers.

He depart this life May 12, 1981.  He leaves to mourn his passing: a wife, Rosa Lee of Brazoria; two brothers: James J. Scott of Van Vleck and Jimmy Scott of Bay City; five sisters: O. B. Harrison of Galveston, Daisy Rugeley of Sweeny, N. B. Greenwood of Mercet, California, Matha Lee Brinkley of Van Vleck and Josey Green of Bay City; and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

Active Pallbearers: Clifford L. Rugeley, Jimmy Scott, William Watson, Collis Rugeley, Donald R. Barrett, John Elder, and Rev. L. Manning.

Mrs. Rachel Scott Shaw, 63, of Merced, California died July 4 in California. Survivors include: five sisters, Mrs. O. B. Harrison of Galveston, Mrs. Daisy Rugeley of Sweeny, Mrs. Anna B. Greenwood of Merced, Calif., Mrs. Josie Green of Bay City and Mrs. Mathia Lee Brinkley of Van Vleck; three brothers, James J. Leslie Stanford

Leslie Stanford, 63, of Houston, died March 24, 1976 at the Veterans Hospital in Houston. He was born Sept. 10, 1913 in Texas. He was a former resident of Matagorda County and a veteran of WWII. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Mildred Kennedy of Brazoria; one brother, Wesley Stanford of Tomball and a host of nieces and nephews. Services will be held Sunday, March 28, at 2 p.m. at the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Allenhurst. The Rev. W. M. Mayfield will officiate. Burial will be in Allenhurst Cemetery. Elma Campbell Temple

 

Funeral services for Elma Campbell Temple, age 89, of Galveston, will be held Thursday, Oct. 10, 1996, at 2 p. m., in the chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home in Bay City, with Rev. Jerry Temple officiating. Burial will follow at Allenhurst Cemetery in Allenhurst.

She was born in Allenhurst, Texas, Friday, Nov. 24, 1906, to Louis Campbell and Hannah Scott Campbell, and passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 1996, at UTMB Hospital in Galveston, Texas.

 

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Linda Temple Jones of Houston, and one son, Jimmie Temple of Galveston; as well as one granddaughter. Also six sisters, Mrs. Alice Campbell of Allenhurst, Ms. Lola Campbell of Hitchcock, Mrs. Mary Spencer of LaMarque, Mrs. Maggie Thibodeaux, Mrs. Ella Benefield and Mrs. Helen Simons, all of Galveston; and four brothers, Melvin Campbell and Hubert Campbell of Galveston, and Wilson Campbell and Henry Campbell of Hitchcock.

 

She leaves two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Bernice Campbell and Mrs. Joyce Campbell, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

 

Active pallbearers will include Wilson Campbell, Jr., Fred Campbell, Henry Coger, Anthony Hudgins, Andrea Krook and Gary Krook.

 

Honorary pallbearers will include her brothers.

Willie Wiley

BAY CITY [Matagorda County, Texas -- Willie Wiley, 71, of Bay City, died Friday, March 22, 2002. He was born March 11, 1930 , in Allenhurst, to the late Toby and Louise Abbott Wiley.

Survivors: wife, Lela Mae Wiley of Houston; daughters, Brenda Wiley of Clute and Helen Marie Vinson of Simonton; son, Willie Wiley of Freeport and David Wiley of Houston; sisters, Wilma Johnson of Van Vleck, Rosie Wiley of West Columbia and Lillie Mae Gipson of Bay City; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: parents.

Visitation will be noon until 8 p.m. today at Green's Mortuary. Family visitation will be 7-8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home chapel.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at New Horizons Holiness Church , the Rev. Charles Roberson officiating.

Peardee Miller-Wright

January 11, 1922 – February 16, 2021

Mrs. Peardee Wright is at peace with God now, and rejoicing in her heavenly home. Pearlee was fourth (4th) of eleven children born to Mr. & Mrs. John Miller in Blessing, Texas, on June 11, 1922, of which 9 preceded her in death.

One of the most important aspects of Peardee’s life was the affiliating with Free Zion Baptist Church. Here she accepted Christ, and was able to find the Spiritual guidance which has sustained her throughout her life. Her participation in S. S. and B. Y. P. U was in-deed a growing and learning experience. She received her education at the Clousy Chapel E. S., Blessing High School-Hilliard High Bay City.

She met Rev. Isaac S. Wright, Jr. in 1945, and they were joined in Holy Matrimony November 17, 1946. To this union, they were blessed with (2) children. Their daughter Ima preceded them in death on July 1980.

In 1946 she united with Mt. Ararat Baptist Church where her husband was under Shepherd. She served faithfully for 44 years plus under his leadership. He preceded her in death in June 1989. A grandson also preceded her in death in 1986.

She served as Primary Girls #8 teacher, member of Susie Williams Circle, Recording Secretary of Mission 1, member of Membership Orientation Committee until the latter part of 1989. At one time a member of the Senior Choir and later singing in Mission Chorus, and Financial Secretary of Mission No. 1 of Independent Association, Assistant Secretary of Baptist Wives Association, Treasurer of Ministers Wives Charity Union.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Isabell Miller; daughter, Ima Southall; grandson, Leroy P. Southall and nine siblings, Laverne, Samuel, Ezell, John David, Jessie Lee, Herman Lee, James Bryant, Leon, and Ann.

She leaves to cherish her memories one loving son Isaac II (Yolanda). Two grandchildren, Latecia Davis (Thomas), and Isaac IV and one great grandson, Jeremiah. One brother Roy (Faye), special play-granddaughter, Darlene Morgan, special play godson, McKinley Paul and a host of nieces, nephews’ family and friends.
