Bay City Loses a Long-Time Friend
By Cindy Breeding, The Daily Tribune

Bay City—Bay City bids farewell to a pivotal man who was an engineer by trade and a leader by nature: Bert Steves.

Steves arrived in Bay City in 1936. Almost as soon as he arrived, Steves got involved in his community and never quit, commented son Taylor Steves, who now leads the family legacy known as Taylor-Steves. His children, Mary Frances and Scott, share their father’s leadership.

The Taylor-Steves furniture business began in joint with what is now Taylor Bros. Funeral home. It was only one facet of Steve’s community involvement.

Bert Steves was an instigator of the Bay City merchant’s tradition of goodwill and community service.

Steves served as the Bay City Independent School District school board president and as the president of the Chamber of Commerce. He served the Rotary Club, where he received the Paul Harris Award for service above self. Steves served in numerous capacities throughout Bay City and Matagorda County.

In a sense, Steves will be remembered as a citizen who laid foundations and continued to build upon them, drafting from the talents and resources in the community around him.

“A lot of people don’t know it, but Dad designed and engineered Memorial Stadium,” Taylor Steves commented. Following Steves’ spirit and lead, the community added on to the stadium later.
