1838 - 1913
A telephone message was received here today conveying the intelligence of the death of John McCall, a citizen of Bay City who has been in the hospital there for treatment for sometime. He will be buried here tomorrow morning immediately after the arrival of the morning train.
John McCall was only a peanut vendor, but by attending strictly to his own business he managed to not only make a living for himself, but we understand that he had saved enough to take care of himself when he became afflicted several months ago.
Quiet and inoffensive, polite and eager to please, Mr. McCall gathered about him quite a large force of permanent customers. For years he plied his trade at the same place, in front of Toney’s barber shop and made the shop his headquarters. He was a good man and no man has ever been heard to utter one word against him.
He lived the simple life, the unostentatious existence, but died the glorious death of peace and good will to all mankind, surrendering his soul to his Maker secure in the happy thought that death was relieving him of no enemy for he had none. Who knows but that this quiet, suffering, patient, sympathetic soul rests now more securely in the blessing of a greater beyond than many who live and die better known, more sought for and with the comforts of life about them.
Mr. McCall was 72 years of age and a conscientious, consecrated member of the Presbyterian Church.
“Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.”
