Manie Viola Matthews, born on August 18, 1931, in Houston, TX, joined the Lord while surrounded by her family on Thursday, October 19, 2023. She lived a remarkable 92 years, those of which she would have undoubtedly exclaimed to be “so blessed!” as she was often heard saying. It only makes sense that with such gratitude in her heart, she was called to dedicate herself to serving her community, church, and family. Manie was the youngest of six children born to Manie Pearl Hardy Brown and Albert Baxter Brown. She was the type who knew what she wanted and had the ambition to realize her dreams. After graduating from Bay City High School in 1948, she furthered her education by attending business school in Houston. Thereafter, Manie Brown became Manie Matthews upon her marriage to Rodney Estel Matthews. Together, they worked devotedly, side by side, ranching and rice farming while also raising their family. In 1974, Manie earned another outstanding achievement by receiving her bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Houston. She subsequently dedicated her career to education, serving as a special education teacher in Bay City ISD. After obtaining her master’s degree, she worked as an educational diagnostician for Matagorda County Educational Services (MCES). Manie made a significant impact in Bay City ISD, Sweeny ISD, and Columbia-Brazoria ISD. Even after retirement she continued contract work with various school districts well into her seventies. Manie was known not only as a teacher, but for her love of art, flowers, and nature. While ironically, she was quite afraid of birds, she loved having them around and invited purple martins onto her property to enjoy. In regard to nature, she would also warn her loved ones: “Don’t feed the alligators!” Certainly, Manie was multifaceted. She was known to be a skilled seamstress and an ardent prayer warrior. Throughout her life, she remained a dedicated member of Cedar Lane Baptist Church, where she spent many years teaching a ladies' Sunday School class. She couldn’t help but be a teacher in every way. Manie lived a full life of love, education, and community service. Her memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Manie leaves, to delight in memories and to love and serve as she taught, her dear family, including her sons; Rodney, Gary Matthews, daughter; Nancy Brooker (Raymond), and daughter-in-law Dena Matthews. She also leaves behind numerous cherished grandchildren; Nancy Johnson, Alan Matthews (Marion), Katie Brown (Steve), Justin Brooker (Lauren), Mandi McKnight (Cory), and Mycah Rex (Levi). She was “Gigi” to her beloved great-grandchildren; Landen Hurley and Joshua Johnson; Simon, Benjamin Matthews; Liam Brooker and Sawyer Brown; Allie, Aubrey, Avery McKnight; and Birdie Brooker. She was also blessed with a wide circle of much-loved nieces and nephews. Manie’s life was made even more complete by special friends whom she held close to her heart; Helen Kassler, Mary Ashby, Hazel Clements, and Ava Daniels. She was preceded in death by her mother, Manie Brown; father, Albert Brown; brother, Albert Brown; and sisters, Opal Martin, Ruby Viereck, Vernie Bowie, and Helen Clements. Lucille Joyce Maxwell, 79, of Bay City, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 2, 2024, in Galveston, Texas with her children and grandchildren along her side. She was born on April 1, 1944, in San Antonio, Texas, to the late William Franklin Zimmerman and Emily Anna Fillipp. She was raised and graduated from El Campo Tx.
Lucille was a kind and soft-hearted lady who fought a yearlong battle
with Cancer. She was often shy at times or could just have been the
fact that most of our family is very loud and outspoken. Her favorite
flower was a rose. Her favorite perfume was Shalimar by Guerlain. A very
old fragrance, not always easy to find. She loved dancing. She loved
doing crosswords and spending time with her family. When she and her
sister Geraldine would go off without supervision you never knew what to
expect. They sometimes would go clothes shopping and come home with a
car. Their shenanigans never surprised us. She worked at Golden Corral
for 25 years and loved all her customers and time there. It was still
her favorite place to eat. Lucille was an amazing strong lady and will
be well missed and loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Emily Zimmerman; husband Robert Lee Maxwell; sister Geraldine Anna Anderson and brother Franklin William Zimmerman. Lucille is survived by her sister Ailene Kestel; daughters, Sonja Ledwig, Pamela Thompson, Jaime Snyder, Janet Maxwell, Holly Buller and husband Billy; grandsons Dayne Ledwig, Riley Snyder, Chance Thompson, Billy Buller III, Jeffery Aron Brown, and Daryn Croft; granddaughters Paitan Hassell and Tex, Jada Snyder, Camryn Thompson, Jennifer Paige Brown; great granddaughter Remy Lou Teutsch; honorary granddaughter Rayne Gilmer, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ida Lee Vickers Muskiet, a devout Catholic, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all who knew her, passed away peacefully at the age of 90, on December 5th, 2023 with her children beside her. Ida was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1932 in LaPorte, TX to the late Charles Vickers and Ruth Wagoneer Vickers. She attended The University of Houston, where (in her words) she obtained a “Mrs” degree after meeting and marrying the love of her life, Lawrence John “Larry” Muskiet. After a brief courtship, Ida and Larry were married on September 25th, 1951 and settled in Bay City, Texas in 1958 where they spent their lives together raising their four children, Donna, Karen, Mike, and John. In addition to being a mother to her children, Ida was also the accountant and bookkeeper for Larry’s TV & Electronics which she and Larry opened in the early 1970’s on 7th Street in Bay City. She was also very active in the community and church throughout the years serving as a member of KJZT, the Catholic Daughters of America, Holy Cross PTA, and a Cub Scout Leader for the Holy Cross Boy Scout Pack. Full of wit and humor, Ida loved to laugh and would always welcome the opportunity for a visit by their friends who would oftentimes stop by Larry’s TV in the middle of the day when they saw her van there. Also, being a savvy card player - it wasn’t uncommon to see those same cars there late into the evening some nights too! Bowling, however, was what Ida enjoyed doing the most! For many years, Larry and Ida traveled nationally where she very proudly won multiple titles in both singles and doubles for her age group. True to form, she even had multiple knee replacement surgeries later in life because she said her bad knees were causing her bowling average to drop! Ida will be deeply missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing her, though the memories we carry in each of us will last forever. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Lawrence John “Larry” Muskiet. Survivors include daughters Donna McNally and husband John, Karen Crain and husband Gary, sons Mike Muskiet and wife Pam, and John Muskiet and wife Jean Claire, grandchildren Anissa Weiss and husband John, Matt Work and wife Leslie, Kristie Kramer and husband Jerrett, Heath Crain and wife Danielle, Larry Muskiet and wife Jessica, Chance Muskiet and wife Shelbie, Whitney Muskiet and fiancé Jacob Zuhlke, Claire Carter, Jordan Kubeczka and wife Emily, great-grandchildren Dalton and Dane Work, Mark Muskiet, Seth Carter, Mason, Jase, and Micah Kubeczka, Olin Kramer and Case Muskiet. The family would also like to sincerely thank Dora Flores, Senaida Longoria, Alice Dewitt, and Penny Pluss for the amazing at home care they provided Ida over these past three years. Lawrence John “Larry” Muskiet, of Bay City, Texas – a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all who knew him, passed away peacefully on November 2nd, 2019 after several weeks of failing health. Born on January 3rd, 1929 in Sealy, Texas to the late John Frank Muskiet and Frances Stastny Muskiet, Larry was raised on the family farm where the belief that hard work and lifelong learning pays off was instilled in him by his parents. After spending much of his youth tending to the family farm, Larry attended University of Houston where he met the love of his life, Ida Lee Vickers. Ida and Larry were married on September 25th, 1951 after a brief courtship and settled in Bay City, Texas in 1958 where they spent their lives together raising their four wonderful children, Donna, Karen, Mike, and John. Earlier this year, Ida and Larry celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Always full of humor, when anyone asked him what the key to such a long and successful marriage was, he would simply reply, “Patience!” Though, to know him was to truly understand he was speaking for Ida when he said this! The love Larry had for Ida was unparalleled, and their relationship was a model for all those around them. Larry served as a flight instructor in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. Afterward, his career included teaching mathematics and physics in Magnolia, Van Vleck, and Bay City where he shaped the minds of hundreds of students. During this time, he taught himself electronics and began repairing televisions and radios. Later, he used this knowledge to open Larry’s TV Sales & Service which has been a staple amongst the business community on Bay City’s main thoroughfare, 7th street, for four decades. As TVs made the transition from household furniture to commodity, Larry began investing in real estate and ultimately formed Muskiet Rentals, a business that has provided affordable housing options to the community of Bay City. A devout Catholic, Larry was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church for over 60 years where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and on the School Board. Larry was also a member of The Knights of Columbus, where he attained the order of 4th degree. Larry will be deeply missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him, though the memories we carry in each of us will last forever. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Muskiet and Anita Sturm. He is survived by his wife Ida Lee Muskiet, daughters Donna McNally and husband John, Karen Crain and husband Gary, sons Mike Muskiet and wife Pam, and John Muskiet and wife Jean Claire, grandchildren Anissa Weiss and husband John, Matt Work and wife Leslie, Kristie Kramer and husband Jerrett, Heath Crain and wife Danielle, Larry Muskiet and wife Jessica, Chance Muskiet and wife Shelbie, Whitney Muskiet, Claire Carter and husband Brian, Jordan Kubeczka and wife Emily, greatgrandchildren Dalton and Dane Work, Mark Muskiet, Seth Carter, and Mason and Jase Kubeczka. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, November 11 at 5:00 PM at Taylor Bros. Funeral home followed by the recitation of the Rosary at 6:30 PM. Funeral Services will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to Holy Cross Catholic School. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Marker photo courtesy of Susie Adkins
