Alfred Alvarez Garcia, Sr.

(July 5, 1939 - January 1, 2014)

Alfred “Sonne” Garcia, Sr., went to his heavenly home to join his mom, dad, sisters and brother. Sonne was born on July 5, 1939 in Palacios to the late Nick and Anita Alvarez Garcia, Sr. Sonne loved his family, especially his grandchildren where he always attended their activities. Sonne was an avid sports fan, especially the Dallas Cowboys. Sonne is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Mary Garcia; children, Theresa Dever & husband Larry, Marie Garcia & husband Tony, Alfred Garcia, Jr., Eloy Garcia, Norma Hall; grandchildren, Daryl Hall, Keith Hall, Tre Garcia, Derek Dever, Sadie Richter, Kelly Dever, Anthony Garcia, Brendan Garcia, Drake Garcia, Christopher Garcia, Adrianna Garcia, Mark Hall, Brody Garcia; great grandchildren, Bailee Garcia, Adam Hall, Ethan Hall; brothers, Albert Garcia, Lee Garcia, Nick Garcia, Johnny Garcia, Tony Garcia, Bobby Garcia, Lawrence Garcia; sisters, Mary Ann Garcia, Becky Torres; preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert Garcia, sister Vivian Carrillo. Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, January 4, 2014 with Fr. Bryan Heyer celebrant. Rite of committal will follow at Palacios Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00-8:00P.M. with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00P.M. Friday at the funeral home.

October 30, 1918 – February 3, 2014

Anita G. Garcia, 95, of Bay City passed away February 3, 2014.

She was born October 30, 1918 in Palestine, Texas to Agapito and Amada Arcola Garcia.

Anita is survived by her daughters, Janie Medina of Pearland and Amanda Garcia and Robert Zepeda; sons, Jose DeLeon, Jr. and Lupe, Jesse Garcia and Baronica, Noe Garcia and Sally; sister, Amada Mercido; brothers, Jesse Garcia, Jason Garcia and Pete Garcia, 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Guadalupe Garcia; and her parents.

The family received visitors from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a rosary held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at the funeral home.

The funeral service will be Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 10 a.m., at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Candido Gonzales officiating.

Pallbearers will be Tony Medina, Jon Medina, Robert Zepeda, Rudy Lara, Kevin Schroder and Felipe Valdez.

Armando G. Garcia of Van Vleck, Texas passed away April 18, 2013. He was born September 16, 1944 in Sd. Carmargo Tamp. Mexico to the late Corando Garcia and the late Maria Garcia.

He is survived by his wife Maria Chapa Garcia and 7 children. Daughter-Carmen Perez of Bay City, Son-Armando Garcia Jr and Merrilee of Van Vleck, Daughter-Nancy G. Perez and John of Goliad, Daughter-Teresa Micaela Garcia of San Antonio, Daughter- Corina Self and JP of Cumming, Georgia Son-Jose Garza and Ashley of Bay City, Daughter-Evita Garza of Bay City. Nine grandchildren, Fifteen great grandchildren, Brother-Rogelio Garcia of Mission, Sister-Victoria Cuello of Santa Maria, Ca, Brother- the late Miguel Garcia.

He leaves loving memories to be cherished by nieces, nephew's, cousin's, and other relatives and friends.

Carmen Garcia, 71, of Bay City passed away Feb. 7, 1997 at Matagorda House in Bay City.

She was born August 11, 1925 in Temple to Agapito and Amanda Arsola Garcia. She was a life-long resident of Bay City and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son Johnny Garcia of Bay City; by four sisters Anita Garcia of Bay City, Rosa Diaz of California, Juanita Garcia of Amarillo and Amadita Mercado of Texas; by five brothers Samuel Garcia of Premont, Jesus Garcia of Wharton, Pete Garcia of Nacoma and Jacinto Garcia and Bernardo Garcia both of Indio, California.

A prayer service will be held at 7 p. m. Sunday, Feb. 9 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. Candido Gonzales officiating. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Monday, Feb. 10 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Pallbearers include Elias Gomez, Sam Garcia, Mark DeLeon, Pete Rodriguez and Adam Gomez.

Ramon Everett Garcia

Ramon Everett Garcia, 43, of Bay City, formerly of Dimmitt passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2013 in Galveston.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, December 14, 2013, at 1 p.m., at the Immaculate Conception of Mary Catholic Church in Dimmitt with the Rev. Raj Arockia officiating.

Burial followed at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Dimmitt.

Prayer service was held at 7 p.m., Friday evening at the church.

Ramon was born May 11, 1970 in Dimmitt, Texas to Jose, Sr. and Maria Garcia. Ramon received his GED. He owned and operated Hands On. He lived in Bay City, Texas and enjoyed playing pool, dancing and watching sports, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his parents, Jose and Maria Garcia of Dimmitt; his girlfriend, Janie Jaramillo of Bay City; two brothers, Moses E. Garcia and his wife Sara of Amarillo and Santos Jesus Garcia and his wife Yahaira of Justin, Texas; two sisters, Delia Garcia Porter and her husband Robert of Galax, Virginia and Mary Garcia Correa and her husband J.R. of Lubbock; numerous nieces and nephews; one grand-niece; and one grand-nephew.

Arrangements were handled by Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt.

Raymundo Garcia, Jr.

(July 9, 1946 - January 15, 2014)

Raymundo “Mundo” Garcia Jr., 67, of Bay City went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. He was born July 9, 1946 in Bay City to the late Raymundo Garcia Sr. & Mary Fernandez Garcia. Mundo was a life long resident of Bay City, a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, and was retired from the Bay City Police Dept. after many years of dedicated service. He was a very religious man, and very involved with his church. Mundo was a great husband, father, and grandfather who loved his church, family and the outdoors.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years: Eva Ybarra Garcia; 5 children: Mary Alice Garcia, Annette Saldana, Raymundo Garcia III, Ricky Garcia, and Adrian Garay; 14 grandchildren: Nicole Garcia, Jessica Kuplic, T. J. Kuplic, Steven Kuplic, Ashley Kuplic, Bianca Garcia, Niko Saldana, Christopher Kuplic, Raymundo Garcia IV, Seth Garcia, Jacen Garcia, Ricky Garcia Jr., Lauren Garcia, and Nathan Garcia; numerous great grandchildren; and 3 siblings: Manuel Garcia, Belia Garcia, and Jorge Garcia. Mundo was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive visitors after 3:00pm Friday, September 17 with a Rosary at 6:00pm at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 10:00am Saturday, September 18 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Bay City with Msg. Gerry Cernoch. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Jimmie Gail Gardner, Sr.

Feb. 25, 1945 – June 21, 2013

Jimmie Gail Gardner, Sr. of Markham, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2013 after a short battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma. He was born in Dunbar, KY on February 25, 1945 and was the youngest of 11 children. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Phillip and Pearl Gardner; brother, Harold Gardner; and sister, Jewel Gardner. He is survived by: his three children and spouses, Tonya and Stacy Schwartz, Jimmie and Nora Gardner and Cheryl and Anthony Twardowski; six grandchildren, Hannah and Nathaniel Gardner, Aaron and Rachel Schwartz, Veranica and Abagail Twardowski; siblings, Margie Finch, Faye Ward, Edith Wells, Sarah Gardner of Evansville, IN, Tom Gardner, Glenn Gardner and Doris Martin from Kentucky and Sue Hooper from Florida; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jimmie loved traveling and being on the road and was a truck driver for most of his life. Before he got sick, he was very active in the E4E2 Adult Education Program as a student and volunteer. Graveside services were held June 23, 2013 at Midfield Cemetery conducted by the Rev. T.L. Richardson and Green’s Mortuary. Special thanks go to his longtime love and companion, Ruth Killion. Also a sincere appreciation goes to the hospice nurses: Jackie, David, Jason, Bonnie, Evelyn, Pam, Marie and the rest of the hospice staff. PALACIOS - Nellie M. Garner, 80, of Palacios, TX, passed away Dec. 11, 2013. She was born Sept. 27, 1933, in Barnwell County, SC to the late Mike and Hattie Mooney.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Garner of Palacios; sons, Harold Garner of Huntsville, AL and Rev. Wayne Garner of Little Rock, AR; daughter, Linda Gaylord of Loma Linda, CA; sister, Betty Samaniego; and seven grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren .

Raul D. Garza, Jr. 56, of Markham, passed away June 22, 2013. He was born March 27, 1957 in Indo, CA to Oralia D. Garza and the late Raul M. Garza, Sr.

In addition to his mother, he leaves to cherish his memory his brother Noe Garza; sisters Esther Zepeda, Norma Brooks and Veronica Sanchez; 9 nephews Sergio, Javier, David, & Steven Zepeda, Michael & John Cotton, Jacob Brooks, Romey Sanchez, Landen Gibson; 1 niece Crystal Cotton and extended family and friends.

Frank “Larry” George

July 23, 1932 –August 27, 2013

Frank “Larry” George, 81, passed away on August 27, 2013 at his home in Bay City, Texas.

A beloved son, brother, father and grandfather, Larry, was preceded in death by: his parents, Raymond Arthur George and Prudence Elvira George; his sister, Louise Mitchell; and a nephew, Kenny Mitchell.

He is survived by: his brother, Raymond George and sister-in-law Shirley George; daughter, Vickie McMicken and son-in-law Bryan McMicken; daughter, Debbie George; daughter, Kathy Stovall and son-in-law Matt Stovall; step-son, Nathan Coats; and former son-in-law, Horst Karges. He is also survived by: his eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew.

Larry was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on July 23, 1932. After graduating from Lamar University with a degree in Chemical Engineering, he served in the army before settling in Bay City, Texas, where he was a long-time resident. He traveled extensively during his career as a chemical engineer and retired from Celanese Chemical in 1994.

An avid lifelong learner, Larry immersed himself in a variety of hobbies, including painting, drawing, boating, landscaping, acting (he was a member of the Bay City Community Theater), amateur magic, and building remote control airplanes and model train sets. Drawing on his engineering background, he designed and created an amazing model train set and city in a spare bedroom of his home. He was also a lifelong bridge player and greatly enjoyed playing bridge with his friends.

“Grandpa Larry” was very active in all of his grandchildren’s lives and faithfully attended their choir concerts, theatrical performances, athletic events and award ceremonies. He was always ready to help with school projects, no matter how big or small, and eager to share his love of learning.

Visitation was held Friday, August 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, Texas.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 31, at the First Baptist Church, also in Bay City, where he was a member.

He was buried at Hawley Cemetery near Blessing, Texas.

April 10, 1933 –August 10, 2013

Harold George passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2013.

Harold was born on April 10, 1933 in Wichita Falls, Texas to the late Wyatte William and Myrtie Mae Roberts George.

Harold is survived by: his wife of 62 years, Marie Wallace George; children, Karen Crane, H. Wayne George ll, Robin Davis and James Wyatte George; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at the Midfield Cemetery with the Rev. Tony Gideon officiating.

Donald Wayne Gibbens

(February 10, 1918 - June 25, 2013)

Donald Wayne Gibbens, 95 formerly of Bay City, passed away on June 25, 2013 in Katy, Texas. He was born February 10, 1918 in Scott County, Arkansas to the late Bud D. and Cassie Gibbens. He moved to Bay City in 1928 where he eventually met his future wife, Eva. They married on May 17, 1941, and resided in Bay City until 2006 when they moved to an assisted living facility in Katy to be closer to their children. He was employed as an electrician as CP&L for 41 years until his retirement in 1980. He also enjoyed buying, selling and trading cattle. Don was a charter member of Golden Avenue Baptist Church, formerly Baptist Temple, in 1949; he served there as a deacon for many years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was a man of strong integrity and humble leadership. He loved and faithfully served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, until his death and is now celebrating with Him in Heaven.

In addition to his parents and all his siblings (two sisters and four brothers), he was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Eva; son-in-law Charles Jurecka. Survivors include; his children, Wayne & Bobbie Gibbens and Gayle Jurecka; grandchildren, Darla & Terry Heeringa, Karen & Steve Kalmus and Ron & Kazuko Gibbens; great-grandchildren, Emily & Rachel Heeringa, Austin & Hunter Kalmus and Eva Gibbens; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home. A celebration of his life will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, June 28, 2013 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Gibbs Rites Set Thursday

Carroll Thomas Gibbs, 87, passed away at his home at 2220 Ave B Tuesday morning. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday in Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel with Rev. W. D. Baker officiating. Masonic graveside services will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maxie Gibbs of Bay City; five daughters, Mrs. Jewell Cleek of Sweeny, Mrs. Grace Glauser and Mrs. Irene Hale of San Antonio, and Mrs. Doris Edwards of Corpus Christi; six sons, William Gibbs of Cameron, J. T. Gibbs and Harrell Gibbs of Bay City, Kenneth Gibbs of Houston, Elmer Gibbs of Marble Falls and Coleman Gibbs of Snelling, California.

Pallbearers will be Jack Spurgeon, Joyce Richardson, W. B. Sirman, J. T. Taylor, P. J. Reeves and Don Jean Taylor.

A resident of Bay City for 21 years, Gibbs was very active in the Masonic lodge, Past Master of the Yarrellton lodge, a Master Mason for over 50 years, and life member of the Bay City lodge.

Maxie Lou Underwood Gibbs

Mrs. Maxie Lou Gibbs, 89, died in the Matagorda General Hospital May 25, 1976. She was born Feb. 4, 1887 in Tennessee. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Gracie Glauser of San Antonio, Mrs. Lucille Richardson of Bay City, Mrs. Irene Hale of San Antonio and Mrs. Doris Cockburn of Pasadena; four sons, Coleman Gibbs of Leesville, La., Elmer Gibbs of Marble Falls, Kenneth Gibbs of Houston and Harrell Gibbs of Bay City; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Hargett of Sweeny and Mrs. Bernice McCall of Cameron; 13 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was a member of First Baptist Church. A retired nurse, Mrs. Gibbs was a resident of Bay City for 30 years. The funeral will be held from the Taylor Brothers Chapel on May 27, 1976 at 2 p. m. with the Rev. W. D. Baker officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers are W. GIBBS, Joe Taylor “Pete,” of 2220 Ave B, passed away in his sleep November 13. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. C. T. [Maxie Lou] Gibbs, with whom he made his home, and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Jewell Cleek of Sweeny; Mrs. Grace Glauser and Irene Hale of San Antonio; William Gibbs of Cameron; Mrs. Morris Richardson and Harrell Gibbs of Bay City; Coleman Gibbs of Leesville, La.; Elmer GIbbs of Marble Falls; Kenneth Gibbs of Houston and Doris Cockburn of Tucson, Ariz. Mary Louise Gillespie

(June 7, 1927 - January 17, 2014)

Mary Louise Gillespie, 86, of Van Vleck passed away January 17, 2014. She was born June 7, 1927 in Houston, TX to the late Norman Camp and Ethel Dann Camp. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Van Vleck where she served in the choir and a member of United Methodist Women. She and her late husband, Paul Gillespie, owned and operated Paul’s Drive-in Grocery in Van Vleck for a number of years, but most of all she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Mary was an avid bowler and gardener and she loved the beach.

Survivors include daughters Cynthia Jaques of San Antonio and Joy Wernly & husband Timothy of Van Vleck; son Richard Gillespie & wife Brenda of Clute; sisters Betty Ritz of Louisiana and Doris Adams of Houston; grandchildren Andrea Hopkins, April Calk, Christy Brown, Caleb Wernly, Dean Gillespie, Ryan Gillespie and Phillip Don Kelley; great grandchildren Garrett Calk, Christin Calk, Colbey Calk, Easton Brown, Payton Brown, Annebelle Hopkins, Logan Gillespie and Lyla Gillespie and great-great grandson Landon Calk.

John Thomas Glenn

Funeral services for John Thomas Glenn were held Thursday, February 24, at 11 a. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery.

A son of the late James J. and Louise Malone Glenn, he was born August 9, 1898 in Kaufman County, Texas. A retired self-employed carpenter, he had been a resident of Palacios for 41 years, residing at 1007 Fourth St. He passed away Tuesday, February 22 in Wagner General Hospital.

He is survived by one daughter Mrs. W. M. (Laverne) Dearen of Houston; one son, John D. Glenn of Palacios; two sisters, Mrs. Kathryn Hindman of Port Lavaca and Mrs. Sally Rallings of Electra, Texas; one brother, Nester Glenn of Dallas and six grandchildren.

Diana Gonzales

Diana Gonzales (Miss G), 53, from Palacios, Texas was born on September 28, 1959 to Robert and Lydia Gonzales along with brother, Ruben Gonzales and sister, Nora Flores.

Diana is survived by: brother, Ruben Gonzales and wife Julia of Markham; sister, Nora Flores of Austin and ex-brother-in-law David Flores of Corpus Christi; two nephews, Ruben Gonzales Jr. and Robert David Flores; four nieces, Amy Elaine G. Marroquin (Saul), Melinda G. Zepeda (Sergio), Jennifer G. Rhodes (Justin) and Natalia Flores; two great-nieces, Audrey Marie Zepeda and Julyssa Alida Marroquin; seven great-nephews, Isaac and Anthony Zepeda, Enrique, Christopher and Christian Marroquin and Mason and Gavin Rhodes.

She is also survived by: numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and students.

Diana, best known as (Miss G) by her students, was a schoolteacher and a bus driver at Tidehaven I.S.D. She also worked as a dispatcher at the Palacios Police Department when needed.

Isabel is survived by her husband of 20 years Angel Gonzales; children, Ashlie Rangel, Amy Gonzales, Maggie Gonzales, Racheal Daniels; 8 grandchildren; Mother, Guadalupe Guzman, 7 sisters and three brothers. Lydia T. Gonzales, 79, from Palacios, Texas was born on November 30, 1933 to Lauro and Lucinda Trevino along with her seven brothers, Lauro, Lupe, Gilbert, Ramon, Porfiro, Ralph, Abelardo and six sisters, Alberta, Amelia, Beatrice, Concepcion, Mary and Rosie.

Lydia is survived by: son, Ruben Gonzales and wife Julia of Markham; daughter, Nora Flores of Austin and ex-son-in-law David Flores of Corpus Christi; two grandsons, Ruben Gonzales Jr. of Llano and Robert David Flores of Austin; four granddaughters, Amy Elaine G. Marroquin (Saul), Melinda G. Zepeda (Sergio), Jennifer G. Rhoades (Justin) and Natalia Flores; two great-granddaughters, Audrey Marie Zepeda and Julyssa Alida Marroquin; seven great-grandsons, Isaac and Anthony Zepeda, Enrique, Christopher and Christian Marroquin and Mason and Gavin Rhoades.

She is preceded in death by: her husband, Robert Gonzales; daughter, Diana Gonzales; parents, Lauro and Lucinda Trevino; brothers, Lauro Trevino, Lupe Trevino, Ramon Trevino and Gilbert Trevino; sisters, Alberta Ozuna, Amelia Galvez and Rosie Coronado.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was loved by many.

Pierre E. Gordon

Funeral services for Pierre E. Gordon, 78, of Bay City were scheduled for 3 p. m. today at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry E. Fugatt of Bay City Christian Center and the Rev. John Cuthbertson of Austin officiating.

A Masonic funeral was conducted by Bay City Lodge 865. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mr. Gordon was born to Walt W. and Dora Gordon in Dallas on Nov. 14, 1907 and died Nov. 19, 1985, at his residence.

He was a member of the Episcopal Church and the Bay City Christian Center of Bay City.

Mr. Gordon was employed for many years by Brewster and Bartle Drilling Co. and retired in the early 1960s. He purchased the Milam Motel in 1962 in Wharton.

In 1975 he returned to Bay City. He was very active in the Masonic fraternity and was past master of Bay City Lodge 865, past commander of Bay City Commandery 74, past high priest of Bay City chapter 315 and past thrice illustrious master of Bay City Council 251.

He was a life member of the Knights of the York Cross of Honour, Texas Priory 23 and a member of the Bay City Chapter 380 Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include his wife, Polly Gordon of Bay City; a sister, Hazel France of Dallas; three daughters, Jeanne Gaynor of Anchorage, Alaska; Betty Jo Lacey of Paris, Texas; and Billie Winfrey of Bay City; a goddaughter, Cathey Lynne Sawyer of Nacogdoches; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers included Thomas Crossland, Gordon Crossland, Gordon Winfrey, Hill Winfrey, John Paul Mielsch and Ron Macy.

Honorary pallbearers included the Masonic brothers of Bay City Lodge A. F. & A. M. 865.

Arrangements were with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Herman Gottschald Rites Set For Thurs.

Herman Gottschald, 60, a veteran of World War I died at Marine Hospital, Galveston, Tuesday morning at 4:25. He has been a resident of Blessing for a good many years.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Shultze, Louise, Tex., Mrs. Anna Buggs, El Campo; two brothers, Walter Gottschald, Blessing, Adolph Gottschald, Wharton.

Funeral services will be held at Hawley Cemetery, Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p. m. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Matchett Newman Funeral Home.

Earl Dwayne Graham, 74, passed away on January 6, 2014 in Tyler, Texas.

He was born in Post, Texas, but spent most of his childhood in Sargent, Texas.  He graduated from Van Vleck ISD and went on to get his degree at Sam Houston University.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alton Earl Graham.

He is survived by his mother, Lillian Graham of Bay City; step-mother, Leta Graham of Palestine; son, Jason Graham of Bay City; sister, Gwendolyn Ann Graham of San Antonio; step-sister, Vickie Shaffer and husband Chuck of Palestine; brother, Alton Gary Graham and wife Barbara of Van Vleck; granddaughters, Kara Graham of Edna, Kasie Gee and husband Dustin of Sweeny; great-grandson, Kasen Gee; nieces, Joanna Holt and husband Phil of Van Vleck, Jessica Graham of Sargent; step-niece, Kristi Edson and husband Tommy of Palestine; nephew, Justin Graham and wife Sarabeth of Fort Worth; and great-nephews, Brandon Holt and Colt Graham.

Lillian Violet Socha Graham, 94, of Bay City passed away March 7, 2014. She was born March 5, 1920 in Sargent, Texas to the late Adolph Socha and Beatrice Chambliss Socha. Lillian was a self-employed entrepreneur all of her life. In the early years, she farmed cotton and corn and then later, grass, pecans, and crabbing along with managing Sargent Grocery Store.

She was preceded in death by her son Earl Dwayne Graham. Survivors include daughter Ann Graham of San Antonio; son Alton Gary Graham (Barbara) of Van Vleck; grandchildren Jason Graham of Bay City, Joanna Holt (Phil) of Van Vleck, Jessica Graham of Sargent and Justin Graham (Sarabeth) of Fort Worth; great grandchildren Brandon Holt, Kasie Gee, Kara Graham & Colt Graham and great-great grandchild Kasen Gee. M. C. “Sonny” Grantham

Sonny Grantham, of LeBleu Settlement, left this world to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, March 30, 2013 in Lake Charles. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 6 p.m. at Johnson's Funeral Home. Memorial Visitation will be from 2pm-7pm.

Sonny was born on February 21, 1938 in Bay City, Texas to the late Grace Olivia Cone and Ivey Grantham.

Sonny graduated from Peacock Military Academy in San Antonio, TX in 1956. He was employed by Lockheed Aircraft and moved to Lake Charles in 1965. After Lockheed relocated, Sonny became a longtime outside salesman for Standard Supply and later drove for Groendyke Transport. Sonny was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as driver for the mission teams and the students for the English as a Second Language class. Sonny was loved by all that knew him and was known for his lighthearted manner and great wit. He was a kind man that loved with no end his children, grandchildren, friends, and God.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter Monica Grantham Little and husband Raymond, grandsons: Hunter and Hayden Little, all of Lake Charles; his son Mark A. Kalyn Westmoreland Green

Kalyn Westmoreland Green passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013 in The Woodlands, Texas at the age of 68.  Kalyn was born in Bay City, Texas on April 7th.

She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, David; her daughter, Tiffany Ann and her son-in-law, Ken;  her brothers, Greg, Reid and Jim; and sisters, Jami and Mary. 

She is survived by grandchildren, Brady Cole and Karsen Lyne; she also leaves Uncle Bert and Aunt Dot Huebner; as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Pascal and Ruth Baer Westmoreland of Bay City, Texas.

Kalyn graduated from Texas Women’s University with a BSRN.  She worked for Methodist Hospital in Dallas as the ICU Charge Nurse for two years, then transitioned to a Nurse Practitioner, Internal Medicine for 15 years.  After many years in the industry she retired from the field and became a certified Medical Assistant Instructor with Texas School of Business.  Teaching was always her passion.

Volunteering was her passion, she volunteered at McCullough High School in the library and front office and was very involved in the PTA.  She was actively involved in a mother-daughter organization, National Charity League (NCL) and was recognized in the community several times for her contributions.  She went on to be the National President of this great organization and spent many years volunteering and teaching others.  She also volunteered her time as a member of the Cypress Woodlands Junior Forum, Plano Chamber of Commerce, American Red Cross, Montgomery County Welcome Wagon, Ohio Scholarship Program & Miss America Scholarship Program – Chaperone and Advisor and was a member of many many more.

In 2005 she became a Master Gardener, where she continued to volunteer in the gardens and greenhouse in Conroe.  She became actively involved in the organization and taught several classes of Interns over the years.  She was also a Certified Propagation Specialist.  Member of The Bluebonnet Garden Club.

Kalyn loved to travel, as a member of the 100 Wonders of the World Travel Club she traveled to 73 of the 100 wonders of the world.  Some of her favorite trips were Peru, South Africa, Russia, Egypt, Greece, Sweden, Luxembourg, Finland and every EU country.

Jennifer Lee Boyer Greenway, 34, of Bay City went to her heavenly home on Saturday, August 24, 2013.

Jennifer was born on April 24, 1979 in Vero Beach, Florida to Sandra and Donald Boyer.

It was as a mother that Jennifer found her true calling, devoting herself to raising her children. Jennifer was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Jennifer is survived by: her children, Haley, Morgan, Taylor and Jared; by her parents, Sandra and Donald Boyer; and by her best friend, Hollie Boyett.

The family received visitors from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 26, 2013 at the funeral home.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City with the Rev. Chris Harrison officiating.

Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers were Bill Dowdy, David Dowdy, Jeff Mikita, Thomas Boyett, Brent Batchelor and Bill Isaacson.

Roy & Frances Guerra

A memorial service for Roy, 82 and Frances Guerra, 70, of Palacios will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating.

Roy was born June 9, 1931 to Jose and Catarina Guerra and passed away peacefully on February 22, 2014. He was a commercial fisherman all his life until he retired. Frances was born October 31, 1944 to Joe and Guadalupe Leija and passed away peacefully on November 21, 2013. She was a devoted wife and mother.

He is survived by sons and daughters: Tony Garcia and wife Gloria, Lisa Guerra, Roy Guerra, Oralia Luster and husband Michael, Matilda Guerra and David Guerra; grandchildren: Katie and Mandie Garcia, Brianna and Adrianne Guerra, Valeria and Julianne Valdez, and Brittany Delgado; and great-grandchildren: Alvin, Ethan, Adam and Noah Escalante and Mona Delgado. Roy leaves behind his beloved sisters: Antonia Flores, Bertha Martino, Lydia Longoria, Olga Latapie, Oralia Mijares and husband Joe; and numerous nieces and nephews. Frances is survived by brothers Pete and Rosse Leija and several nieces and nephews.

BAY CITY - Tiofilo "Filo" Guerrero went to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 16, 2013. Filo was born on Feb. 13, 1948 in LaFeria, Texas to the late Ataulfo and Rosa Galvan Guerrero, Sr.

Filo was a musician, playing his accordion for family and friends. Filo was a loving father and grand father. Filo was a very upbeat person always telling jokes.

Filo is survived by his loving family, children; Raynaldo Guerrero & wife Toni, Tiofilo Guerrero Jr. & wife Tanya, Valdemar Guerrero & wife Valerie, Brenda Crume & husband Dale, Bryan Guerrero & wife Carrie; 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; sisters, Maria Martinez, Sylvia Hernandez, Ursula Longoria and Zulema Rendon; brothers, Raul Guerrero, Ataulfo "Joe" Guerrero Jr., and Ramiro Guerrero. David Joseph Guidry

August 29, 1947 –August 21, 2013

David Joseph Guidry, 65, went to be with The Lord on August 21, 2013, at home, amongst loving family.

He was born August 29, 1947 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Viltress J and Cecile R. Guidry Haydel.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Polly Guidry; sons, Frank Guidry and David Wayne Pence; daughter, Brandy Guidry; mother, Cecile Guidry Haydel; brothers, Wayne Degeyter and Harold Degeyter; sister, Pat Guidry Badeaux; grandchildren, David, Victoria, Izabella, Adrian, Ashton, Justin and Morgan; and great-granddaughter, Aubree.

He is preceded in death by his father, Viltress J. Guidry; and loving God-parents, Frances and Mae Frances Reiss.

The love of his life was family, fishing and playing Country Western Music as a drummer. He was in several local bands for 30 years and the last being the Medicare Band. He served in the United States Air Force for four years and was a member of the VFW Post 2438 in Bay City, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, September 14, 2013, at the VFW Post 2438 in Bay City, Texas.

Emil Gustafson, County Pioneer, Dead At Age 82

Emil Niles Gustafson, a man who earned a place in the history of Bay City and Matagorda County passed away at his home in Houston Tuesday morning at the age of 82.

He first came to the Bay City area in 1908 on levee construction. He was elected county surveyor in 1912, later became county and city civil engineer. He was one of those instrumental in formulating plans for “taking Matagorda County out of the mud” in the building of primary full width paved roads and paved “half roads” on secondary rights of way which was supported by a $3 million county bond issue in the late twenties.

He became the local resident engineer for the Texas State Highway Department in 1927 and left here in 1933 for a position in Fort Worth. Gustafson was born January 30, 1887 in Marcos, Iowa and moved as a child with his parents to Travis County, Texas. He attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, later studied civil engineering at the University of Texas in Austin.

He devoted his life to conservation, navigation, and highway construction projects in Rio Grande Valley, Corpus Christi, Austin, Fort Worth, Bay City and Houston. At one time, he served as owner-president of a concrete products firm in Houston.

He was always active in civic activities, having served as president of the Bay City Rotary Club of which he was a charter member and president of the Bay City Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Houston, life member of American Society of Civil Engineers and was a 32nd degree Mason. He had continued his membership in the Christian Church in Bay City until his death.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Mable Clifford of Austin and one brother, Wilfred F. Gustafson of Gonzales and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maude Bowman Gustafson in 1957.

Services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday at the Forest Park Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale, Houston. Dr. Ed. Blum will officiate.

Bay Citians among the honorary pallbearers are James Cartrell [Gartrell?], Cooper Gusman, Lawrence Gwin, Layton Moore and John Rother.

Also Roland Rugeley, H. I. White, Dr. Sam Sholars, J. J. Spurgeon and Pat Thompson.

Mrs. Elizabeth Guynes Dies At Clute, Texas

Mrs. Elizabeth Guynes, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. J. Nicholson in Clute, Texas on December 25. Mrs. Guynes was born in Chatfield, Texas April 29, 1896 as Mary Elizabeth Little. She and Roe Guynes were married April 23, 1912 and to this union six children were born, five of which are now living. She and Mr. Guynes moved to Blessing, Texas in 1918, making it their home for 28 years. Due to ill health she had made her home in Clute, Texas the past year at the home of her daughter. She is survived by the following children: A. N. Guynes of Houston, Mattie Nora Hurta of Midfield, Margaret Nicholson of Clute, J. R. Guynes of Sweeny and Garland D. Guynes of Clute. Surviving also are two sisters, Mrs. Chesley Patterson and Mrs. C. H. Helfner of Corsicana; three brothers, Jimmie Little of Chatfield, Oliver and William Little of Ft. Worth.

Mrs. Guynes was laid to rest in the Hawley Cemetery beside her husband who preceded her in death two and one half years.

Harry Wayne Guynes, 74, of Bay City passed away January 5, 2014. He was born November 6, 1939 in Houston, TX to the late Harry Guynes, Jr. and Violet Olive Paulk Guynes.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lucille Guynes, son-in-law Mike Magee, Sr. and grandson Darin Wayne Guynes.
