Alfred “Sonne” Garcia, Sr., went to his heavenly home to join his mom, dad, sisters and brother. Sonne was born on July 5, 1939 in Palacios to the late Nick and Anita Alvarez Garcia, Sr. Sonne loved his family, especially his grandchildren where he always attended their activities. Sonne was an avid sports fan, especially the Dallas Cowboys. Anita G. Garcia, 95, of Bay City passed away February 3, 2014. She was born October 30, 1918 in Palestine, Texas to Agapito and Amada Arcola Garcia. Anita is survived by her daughters, Janie Medina of Pearland and Amanda Garcia and Robert Zepeda; sons, Jose DeLeon, Jr. and Lupe, Jesse Garcia and Baronica, Noe Garcia and Sally; sister, Amada Mercido; brothers, Jesse Garcia, Jason Garcia and Pete Garcia, 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guadalupe Garcia; and her parents. Ramon Everett Garcia, 43, of Bay City, formerly of Dimmitt passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2013 in Galveston. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, December 14, 2013, at 1 p.m., at the Immaculate Conception of Mary Catholic Church in Dimmitt with the Rev. Raj Arockia officiating. Burial followed at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Dimmitt. Prayer service was held at 7 p.m., Friday evening at the church. Ramon was born May 11, 1970 in Dimmitt, Texas to Jose, Sr. and Maria Garcia. Ramon received his GED. He owned and operated Hands On. He lived in Bay City, Texas and enjoyed playing pool, dancing and watching sports, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his parents, Jose and Maria Garcia of Dimmitt; his girlfriend, Janie Jaramillo of Bay City; two brothers, Moses E. Garcia and his wife Sara of Amarillo and Santos Jesus Garcia and his wife Yahaira of Justin, Texas; two sisters, Delia Garcia Porter and her husband Robert of Galax, Virginia and Mary Garcia Correa and her husband J.R. of Lubbock; numerous nieces and nephews; one grand-niece; and one grand-nephew. Raymundo “Mundo” Garcia Jr., 67, of Bay City went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. He was born July 9, 1946 in Bay City to the late Raymundo Garcia Sr. & Mary Fernandez Garcia. Mundo was a life long resident of Bay City, a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, and was retired from the Bay City Police Dept. after many years of dedicated service. He was a very religious man, and very involved with his church. Mundo was a great husband, father, and grandfather who loved his church, family and the outdoors. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years: Eva Ybarra Garcia; 5 children: Mary Alice Garcia, Annette Saldana, Raymundo Garcia III, Ricky Garcia, and Adrian Garay; 14 grandchildren: Nicole Garcia, Jessica Kuplic, T. J. Jimmie Gail Gardner, Sr. of Markham, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2013 after a short battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma. He was born in Dunbar, KY on February 25, 1945 and was the youngest of 11 children. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Phillip and Pearl Gardner; brother, Harold Gardner; and sister, Jewel Gardner. He is survived by: his three children and spouses, Tonya and Stacy Schwartz, Jimmie and Nora Gardner and Cheryl and Anthony Twardowski; six grandchildren, Hannah and Nathaniel Gardner, Aaron and Rachel Schwartz, Veranica and Abagail Twardowski; siblings, Margie Finch, Faye Ward, Edith Wells, Sarah Gardner of Evansville, IN, Tom Gardner, Glenn Gardner and Doris Martin from Kentucky and Sue Hooper from Florida; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jimmie loved traveling and being on the road and was a truck driver for most of his life. Before he got sick, he was very active in the E4E2 Adult Education Program as a student and volunteer. Graveside services were held June 23, 2013 at Midfield Cemetery conducted by the Rev. T.L. Richardson and Green’s Mortuary. Special thanks go to his longtime love and companion, Ruth Killion. Frank “Larry” George, 81, passed away on August 27, 2013 at his home in Bay City, Texas. A beloved son, brother, father and grandfather, Larry, was preceded in death by: his parents, Raymond Arthur George and Prudence Elvira George; his sister, Louise Mitchell; and a nephew, Kenny Mitchell. He is survived by: his brother, Raymond George and sister-in-law Shirley George; daughter, Vickie McMicken and son-in-law Bryan McMicken; daughter, Debbie George; daughter, Kathy Stovall and son-in-law Matt Stovall; step-son, Nathan Coats; and former son-in-law, Horst Karges. He is also survived by: his eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew. Larry was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on July 23, 1932. After graduating from Lamar University with a degree in Chemical Engineering, he served in the army before settling in Bay City, Texas, where he was a long-time resident. He traveled extensively during his career as a chemical engineer and retired from Celanese Chemical in 1994. An avid lifelong learner, Larry immersed himself in a variety of hobbies, including painting, drawing, boating, landscaping, acting (he was a member of the Bay City Community Theater), amateur magic, and building remote control airplanes and model train sets. Drawing on his engineering background, he designed and created an amazing model train set and city in a spare bedroom of his home. He was also a lifelong bridge player and greatly enjoyed playing bridge with his friends. “Grandpa Larry” was very active in all of his grandchildren’s lives and faithfully attended their choir concerts, theatrical performances, athletic events and award ceremonies. He was always ready to help with school projects, no matter how big or small, and eager to share his love of learning. Visitation was held Friday, August 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, Texas. The funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 31, at the First Baptist Church, also in Bay City, where he was a member. Donald Wayne Gibbens, 95 formerly of Bay City, passed away on June 25, 2013 in Katy, Texas. He was born February 10, 1918 in Scott County, Arkansas to the late Bud D. and Cassie Gibbens. He moved to Bay City in 1928 where he eventually met his future wife, Eva. They married on May 17, 1941, and resided in Bay City until 2006 when they moved to an assisted living facility in Katy to be closer to their children. He was employed as an electrician as CP&L for 41 years until his retirement in 1980. He also enjoyed buying, selling and trading cattle. Don was a charter member of Golden Avenue Baptist Church, formerly Baptist Temple, in 1949; he served there as a deacon for many years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was a man of strong integrity and humble leadership. He loved and faithfully served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, until his death and is now celebrating with Him in Heaven. In addition to his parents and all his siblings (two sisters and four brothers), he was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Eva; son-in-law Charles Jurecka. Survivors include; his children, Wayne & Bobbie Gibbens and Gayle Jurecka; grandchildren, Darla & Terry Heeringa, Karen & Steve Kalmus and Ron & Kazuko Gibbens; great-grandchildren, Emily & Rachel Heeringa, Austin & Hunter Kalmus and Eva Gibbens; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Mrs. Maxie Lou Gibbs, 89, died in the Matagorda General Hospital May 25, 1976. She was born Feb. 4, 1887 in Tennessee. Mary Louise Gillespie, 86, of Van Vleck passed away January 17, 2014. She was born June 7, 1927 in Houston, TX to the late Norman Camp and Ethel Dann Camp. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Van Vleck where she served in the choir and a member of United Methodist Women. She and her late husband, Paul Gillespie, owned and operated Paul’s Drive-in Grocery in Van Vleck for a number of years, but most of all she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Mary was an avid bowler and gardener and she loved the beach. A son of the late James J. and Louise Malone Glenn, he was born August 9, 1898 in Kaufman County, Texas. A retired self-employed carpenter, he had been a resident of Palacios for 41 years, residing at 1007 Fourth St. He passed away Tuesday, February 22 in Wagner General Hospital. He is survived by one daughter Mrs. W. M. (Laverne) Dearen of Houston; one son, John D. Gonzales, 79, from Palacios, Texas was born on November 30, 1933 to Lauro and Lucinda Trevino along with her seven brothers, Lauro, Lupe, Gilbert, Ramon, Porfiro, Ralph, Abelardo and six sisters, Alberta, Amelia, Beatrice, Concepcion, Mary and Rosie. Rhoades (Justin) and Natalia Flores; two great-granddaughters, Audrey Marie Zepeda and Julyssa Alida Marroquin; seven great-grandsons, Isaac and Anthony Zepeda, Enrique, Christopher and Christian Marroquin and Mason and Gavin Rhoades. She is preceded in death by: her husband, Robert Gonzales; daughter, Diana Gonzales; parents, Lauro and Lucinda Trevino; brothers, Lauro Trevino, Lupe Trevino, Ramon Trevino and Gilbert Trevino; sisters, Alberta Ozuna, Amelia Galvez and Rosie Coronado. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was loved by many. Funeral services for Pierre E. Gordon, 78, of Bay City were scheduled for 3 p. m. today at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry E. Fugatt of Bay City Christian Center and the Rev. John Cuthbertson of Austin officiating. A Masonic funeral was conducted by Bay City Lodge 865. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery. Mr. Gordon was born to Walt W. and Dora Gordon in Dallas on Nov. 14, 1907 and died Nov. 19, 1985, at his residence. He was a member of the Episcopal Church and the Bay City Christian Center of Bay City. Mr. Gordon was employed for many years by Brewster and Bartle Drilling Co. and retired in the early 1960s. He purchased the Milam Motel in 1962 in Wharton. In 1975 he returned to Bay City. He was very active in the Masonic fraternity and was past master of Bay City Lodge 865, past commander of Bay City Commandery 74, past high priest of Bay City chapter 315 and past thrice illustrious master of Bay City Council 251. He was a life member of the Knights of the York Cross of Honour, Texas Priory 23 and a member of the Bay City Chapter 380 Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include his wife, Polly Gordon of Bay City; a sister, Hazel France of Dallas; three daughters, Jeanne Gaynor of Anchorage, Alaska; Betty Jo Lacey of Paris, Texas; and Billie Winfrey of Bay City; a goddaughter, Cathey Lynne Sawyer of Nacogdoches; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers included Thomas Crossland, Gordon Crossland, Gordon Winfrey, Hill Winfrey, John Paul Mielsch and Ron Macy. Honorary pallbearers included the Masonic brothers of Bay City Lodge A. F. & A. Herman Gottschald, 60, a veteran of World War I died at Marine Hospital, Galveston, Tuesday morning at 4:25. He has been a resident of Blessing for a good many years. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Shultze, Louise, Tex., Mrs. Anna Buggs, El Campo; two brothers, Walter Gottschald, Blessing, Adolph Gottschald, Wharton. Earl Dwayne Graham, 74, passed away on January 6, 2014 in Tyler, Texas. He was born in Post, Texas, but spent most of his childhood in Sargent, Texas. He graduated from Van Vleck ISD and went on to get his degree at Sam Houston University. He was preceded in death by his father, Alton Earl Graham. Lillian Violet Socha Graham, 94, of Bay City passed away March 7, 2014. She was born March 5, 1920 in Sargent, Texas to the late Adolph Socha and Beatrice Chambliss Socha. Lillian was a self-employed entrepreneur all of her life. In the early years, she farmed cotton and corn and then later, grass, pecans, and crabbing along with managing Sargent Grocery Store. She was preceded in death by her son Earl Dwayne Graham. Survivors include daughter Ann Graham of San Antonio; son Alton Gary Graham (Barbara) of Van Vleck; grandchildren Jason Graham of Bay City, Joanna Holt (Phil) of Van Vleck, Jessica Graham of Sargent and Justin Graham (Sarabeth) of Fort Worth; great grandchildren Brandon Holt, Kasie Gee, Kara Graham & Colt Graham and great-great grandchild Kasen Gee. Sonny Grantham, of LeBleu Settlement, left this world to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, March 30, 2013 in Lake Charles. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 6 p.m. at Johnson's Funeral Home. Memorial Visitation will be from 2pm-7pm. Sonny was born on February 21, 1938 in Bay City, Texas to the late Grace Olivia Cone and Ivey Grantham. Sonny graduated from Peacock Military Academy in San Antonio, TX in 1956. He was employed by Lockheed Aircraft and moved to Lake Charles in 1965. After Lockheed relocated, Sonny became a longtime outside salesman for Standard Supply and later drove for Groendyke Transport. Sonny was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as driver for the mission teams and the students for the English as a Second Language class. Sonny was loved by all that knew him and was known for his lighthearted manner and great wit. He was a kind man that loved with no end his children, grandchildren, friends, and God. Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter Monica Grantham Little and husband Raymond, grandsons: Hunter and Hayden Little, all of Lake Charles; his son Mark A. Kalyn Westmoreland Green passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013 in The Woodlands, Texas at the age of 68. Kalyn was born in Bay City, Texas on April 7th. She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, David; her daughter, Tiffany Ann and her son-in-law, Ken; her brothers, Greg, Reid and Jim; and sisters, Jami and Mary. She is survived by grandchildren, Brady Cole and Karsen Lyne; she also leaves Uncle Bert and Aunt Dot Huebner; as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Pascal and Ruth Baer Westmoreland of Bay City, Texas. Kalyn graduated from Texas Women’s University with a BSRN. She worked for Methodist Hospital in Dallas as the ICU Charge Nurse for two years, then transitioned to a Nurse Practitioner, Internal Medicine for 15 years. After many years in the industry she retired from the field and became a certified Medical Assistant Instructor with Texas School of Business. Teaching was always her passion. Volunteering was her passion, she volunteered at McCullough High School in the library and front office and was very involved in the PTA. She was actively involved in a mother-daughter organization, National Charity League (NCL) and was recognized in the community several times for her contributions. She went on to be the National President of this great organization and spent many years volunteering and teaching others. She also volunteered her time as a member of the Cypress Woodlands Junior Forum, Plano Chamber of Commerce, American Red Cross, Montgomery County Welcome Wagon, Ohio Scholarship Program & Miss America Scholarship Program – Chaperone and Advisor and was a member of many many more. In 2005 she became a Master Gardener, where she continued to volunteer in the gardens and greenhouse in Conroe. She became actively involved in the organization and taught several classes of Interns over the years. She was also a Certified Propagation Specialist. Member of The Bluebonnet Garden Club. Kalyn loved to travel, as a member of the 100 Wonders of the World Travel Club she traveled to 73 of the 100 wonders of the world. A memorial service for Roy, 82 and Frances Guerra, 70, of Palacios will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Roy was born June 9, 1931 to Jose and Catarina Guerra and passed away peacefully on February 22, 2014. He was a commercial fisherman all his life until he retired. Frances was born October 31, 1944 to Joe and Guadalupe Leija and passed away peacefully on November 21, 2013. She was a devoted wife and mother. He is survived by sons and daughters: Tony Garcia and wife Gloria, Lisa Guerra, Roy Guerra, Oralia Luster and husband Michael, Matilda Guerra and David Guerra; grandchildren: Katie and Mandie Garcia, Brianna and Adrianne Guerra, Valeria and Julianne Valdez, and Brittany Delgado; and great-grandchildren: Alvin, Ethan, Adam and Noah Escalante and Mona Delgado. David Joseph Guidry, 65, went to be with The Lord on August 21, 2013, at home, amongst loving family. He was born August 29, 1947 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Viltress J and Cecile R. Guidry Haydel. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Polly Guidry; sons, Frank Guidry and David Wayne Pence; daughter, Brandy Guidry; mother, Cecile Guidry Haydel; brothers, Wayne Degeyter and Harold Degeyter; sister, Pat Guidry Badeaux; grandchildren, David, Victoria, Izabella, Adrian, Ashton, Justin and Morgan; and great-granddaughter, Aubree. He is preceded in death by his father, Viltress J. Guidry; and loving God-parents, Frances and Mae Frances Reiss. The love of his life was family, fishing and playing Country Western Music as a drummer. He was in several local bands for 30 years and the last being the Medicare Band. He served in the United States Air Force for four years and was a member of the VFW Post 2438 in Bay City, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, September 14, 2013, at the VFW Post 2438 in Bay City, Texas. Emil Niles Gustafson, a man who earned a place in the history of Bay City and Matagorda County passed away at his home in Houston Tuesday morning at the age of 82. He first came to the Bay City area in 1908 on levee construction. He was elected county surveyor in 1912, later became county and city civil engineer. He was one of those instrumental in formulating plans for “taking Matagorda County out of the mud” in the building of primary full width paved roads and paved “half roads” on secondary rights of way which was supported by a $3 million county bond issue in the late twenties. He became the local resident engineer for the Texas State Highway Department in 1927 and left here in 1933 for a position in Fort Worth. Gustafson was born January 30, 1887 in Marcos, Iowa and moved as a child with his parents to Travis County, Texas. He attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, later studied civil engineering at the University of Texas in Austin. He devoted his life to conservation, navigation, and highway construction projects in Rio Grande Valley, Corpus Christi, Austin, Fort Worth, Bay City and Houston. At one time, he served as owner-president of a concrete products firm in Houston. He was always active in civic activities, having served as president of the Bay City Rotary Club of which he was a charter member and president of the Bay City Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Houston, life member of American Society of Civil Engineers and was a 32nd degree Mason. He had continued his membership in the Christian Church in Bay City until his death. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Mable Clifford of Austin and one brother, Wilfred F. Gustafson of Gonzales and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maude Bowman Gustafson in 1957. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday at the Forest Park Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale, Houston. Dr. Ed. Blum will officiate. Bay Citians among the honorary pallbearers are James Cartrell [Gartrell?], Cooper Gusman, Lawrence Gwin, Layton Moore and John Rother. Also Roland Rugeley, H. I. White, Dr. Sam Sholars, J. J. Spurgeon and Pat Thompson.

Mrs. Elizabeth Guynes, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. J. Nicholson in Clute, Texas on December 25. Mrs. Guynes was born in Chatfield, Texas April 29, 1896 as Mary Elizabeth Little. She and Roe Guynes were married April 23, 1912 and to this union six children were born, five of which are now living. She and Mr. Guynes moved to Blessing, Texas in 1918, making it their home for 28 years. Due to ill health she had made her home in Clute, Texas the past year at the home of her daughter. She is survived by the following children: A. N. Guynes of Houston, Mattie Nora Hurta of Midfield, Margaret Nicholson of Clute, J. R. Guynes of Sweeny and Garland D. Guynes of Clute. Surviving also are two sisters, Mrs. Chesley Patterson and Mrs. C. H. Helfner of Corsicana; three brothers, Jimmie Little of Chatfield, Oliver and William Little of Ft. Worth. Mrs. Guynes was laid to rest in the Hawley Cemetery beside her husband who preceded her in death two and one half years.
