Allen Baker, 79, of Bay City passed away March 29, 2023. He was born December 10, 1943 in Austin, Texas to the late Jesse Allen Baker, Sr. and Ella Ruth Fields Baker. Allen was a Marine, he was a cowboy. He was ten feet tall and bullet-proof, and that was on a bad day. He could mow his yard, your yard and the church yard all while walking the dogs, taking the neighbors their mail and re-building a house anywhere without batting an eye. Allen got his drive from his Mom, but he often said he learned everything he knew from his Dad. He spent years creating custom bathrooms and kitchens and setting specialty tile all over the Texas coastline. He could build a house from the ground up and he taught his sons how to build them too. He wanted them to know how to be able to take care of problems that came up on their own. In other words, he was teaching them to fish. Did I say FISH? Man, could that man fish! He loved every minute of being in the ocean, lake, pond or a puddle. If it was deep enough, he'd put a line in. In his younger years he would scuba dive and spear fish. He conquered the water and now it was the sky that was on his list, so he made over 100 jumps from an airplane. Thankfully there was a parachute involved each time. Allen and Judy went on all kinds of amazing adventures all over the world...Ireland, Scotland, Greenland, The West Indies, Jamaica, Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, if a boat goes there, they've at least had a thought about hopping on it. In his later years, his friends, family and community were the most important things to him. He lived on Coffee and Jesus. He really enjoyed church and the Men's Bible Study on Monday night and the friends he made there. He Loved being with his friends at the Code Enforcement Office and rushing out to get all the mowing done. He was a mowing MACHINE. At the end of it all, Allen was a man who loved deeply and completely. He loved with all his heart. When he loved you, he gave everything, all of himself to you. The Bible says in Galatians 5:13 Above all things have an intense and unfailing love for one another. And that was Allen, our Papa. Survivors include his wife Judy Baker; daughter Amanda Virginia Johnson; sons Rick Malachowski and wife Jana, Jim Malachowski and wife Kristen; grandchildren Jared Johnson and wife Morgan, and great grandchildren Lily Paige, Levi Garrett; Alyxandria Malachowski, Stephen, Samuel, Rebecca, Robert, Sarah and Samantha, and Elizabeth Ann Bowman and husband David, and great grandchildren Nikolaus and Charlotte. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church with Lane Par Due officiating. In lieu of flowers please consider giving to Harvest House in Bay City, Texas.

Teresa Regina Bergan passed away early in the morning, August 7, 2021, at the age of 26, after a short illness at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Teresa was born in Bay City, Texas to Danya Guardiola Bergan and James French Bergan. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her sister Maria, and brothers Jim (Rebecca; niece, Therese), Joseph, Louis, and Sean. Teresa is also survived by her grandmother, Nelda Guardiola, with whom she shared a common love of music. The home of her aunt and uncle, Gloria and Rene Guardiola from San Antonio, was always a favorite destination for Teresa. Other aunts and uncles include: Robert Guardiola (Los Angeles, CA), Greg Clock (godfather; Dallas, TX), Joseph (Jean) Bergan (Marquette, MI), Pat (Diane) Bergan (Brookfield, WI), Mary Bergan (Warrenville, IL), Sue (David) Grimaldi (Naperville, IL), Tom (Robin) Bergan (Waterloo, WI), Ellen (Daven) Carlson (Lisle, IL), George (Kim) Bergan (Elletsville, IN), and Peter (Maureen) Bergan (Frisco, TX). Teresa was predeceased by maternal grandfather Luis Guardiola, and paternal grandparents Joseph and Marvada Bergan, as well as by aunt and godmother, Bridget Clock. Teresa suffered from birth with a variety of physical and mental deficiencies. There were things that Teresa couldn’t do. She couldn’t run or even walk appreciable distances. She could talk, but maintaining a conversation was not possible for her. She couldn’t do many things other people take for granted every day. When some people looked at her, that’s what they saw – the things she couldn’t do. But that’s not what we saw, and that’s not who she was. When her family looked at her, they seldom saw what she couldn’t do. No, they saw the many things she could do. She could smile. She could laugh. She could feel unbridled happiness. She could love without condition. She could show her love without ever saying a word. Not everyone has those abilities. There are people who have so many blessings that Teresa never had, and yet don’t appreciate those blessings. They have good health but they take it for granted. They can walk but they don’t know which way to go. They have arms but they can’t use them to reach out to others. They can speak but they don’t know how to tell others they love them. That wasn’t a problem for Teresa. She could express her love with a look, with a smile, with a squeeze. She could even express love by showing whom she felt comfortable enough to fall asleep near because she trusted she’d be cared for. She could communicate her needs by crying because she knew her family would come and help her. This was especially true for Teresa’s mother who cared for her 24/7, 365 days each year. Love isn’t only shared through words. Love is much deeper than words---it’s actions and the tender touch of a mother, father, brother and sister. There were more things Teresa could do. She inspired others to try harder. By seeing her work hard to overcome her own challenges, it reminded others to work harder as well. She helped teach us about our own strengths and gifts in this way. She also taught us how to be happy because she took joy in simple things – joy in seeing her family, joy in putting her puzzles together, joy in singing her favorite songs, and joy even in teasing her brothers. Teresa was an example of perseverance and inner strength, as she continued to fight battles in health and limitations that would crush many of us. She showed us what it is to be strong, because strength is not just found in being the biggest, the toughest or the fastest. Strength is found in one who keeps on going, keeps trying, day after day, long after others give up. Strength is found in one who knows success isn’t always big and flashy but knows that sometimes the greatest success is found in the tiniest of victories. A private Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Agnes Catholic Church.

Our beloved Theresa L. Brady passed away on July 18, just a week away from her 89th birthday. Born in Matagorda County to Margaret Gilmore, Theresa was raised with doting grandparents and many adoring cousins. Her best friends from Bay City Highschool, Teddy and Carole, remained her close friends for life, a testimony to how much Theresa cherished friendship. She could often be caught in good company dancing as mariachis serenaded her at any Mexican restaurant between Houston and San Miguel, Mexico. Theresa was married to James Brady; he showered her with flowers and gifts throughout their 50 years together. Theresa managed the family business for 17 years after James passed away, including the recovery from hurricane Harvey. Theresa is survived by her two daughters, Margaret and Martha, as well as Margaret’s children and their children. Her great grandchildren were especially delighted in giving their great grandmother boxes of chocolates. To say that Theresa loved chocolate would be an understatement. She’d say, ‘what’s in that pretty box? Oh! It’s chocolate. Let’s just all try one little piece.” A 30-piece chocolate arrangement would be gone in a few minutes with all involved snuggled together giggling. We are especially grateful to Ms. Diana Holmes and Ms. Peggy Brooks for their compassion and care during the last years of Theresa’s life. A memorial service is planned for mid-August. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to the Galveston Island ASPCA (or other charity of your choice) in Theresa’s honor.

Marianne Mason Burke, 67, of St. Louis, Missouri, died peacefully in her sleep on August 30, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents George Roswell Burke, Jr. and Marian Storey Burke (née Smith), and brother George Roswell Burke, III; and is survived by her brother Mark Storey Burke, sister Elizabeth Carol Burke Taylor, and children Mary Kathleen Kaseka Kayembe and Tshiswaka Barnabe Kayembe, Jr. Marianne was a devoted and loving mother, a wise counselor, and a loyal friend. She placed her loved ones above herself and opened her arms to anyone who needed help. As a counselor, she took the hardest cases, and never stopped educating herself on the newest findings and techniques in mental health. Her ability to uplift those around her and find silver linings in even the darkest clouds enabled her to turn the most painful traumas in her life into lessons to help guide others through similar situations. Christianity was her foundation, inspiring her to be an active member of her churches as a choir member and Bible study host. Her strong moral compass led her to share her truth and stand up for what was right, even at the cost of her own comfort and security. After graduating from Randolph College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Educational Psychology in 1977, she joined the Peace Corps to spread the gospel and teach in the Congo (then Zaire). She got engaged abroad, and returned to the United States in 1981 to marry and start a family. Over the following years, she and her husband opened their home to sponsor Congolese immigrants. Marianne taught first grade at The College School of Webster Groves while her children attended. She was active in their lives, cheering at every sports game, leading their Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, guiding them through high school and college applications, and fostering their passions for music and literature through weekly piano lessons and trips to the library. She was an unwavering supporter of their passions for the arts, and took pride not only in their hard work and success, but in helping them do what they loved. When divorce upended the trajectory of her life, Marianne did her utmost to continue supporting her children, but also used it as an opportunity to change careers. At fifty, she taught herself to touch-type and entered a master’s degree program at Covenant Seminary, where she graduated cum laude with a Master of Arts in Counseling in 2007. She practiced what she preached as a counselor, applying the skills she learned to herself, and learning them well enough to design courses and teach others. Her incredible interpersonal skills and empathy made others feel seen, heard, and validated, and made her a confidante to clients, friends, family, and even the friends of her children. Despite her waning health, Marianne worked hard, learned continually, and supported her loved ones and clients until she died. She was beloved by many and will be sorely missed. Her family takes comfort in knowing she is finally at rest, pain-free, and receiving the devotion and loving care she selflessly gave to so many others. A funeral service to remember Marianne Burke and celebrate her life was held on Thursday, September 8th, 2022 at Schrader Funeral Home in Ballwin, Missouri. Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City, Texas. In lieu of flowers, please donate to charities dedicated to providing counseling for underprivileged populations, women, and families going through divorce.
