Kenneth G. Barron, 78, passed away in San Antonio, Texas on October 12, 2024. He was born June 13, 1946 in Bay City, Texas to A.L. “Pat” Barron and Gertrude (Benbow) Barron. He attended Bay City public schools and graduated from Bay City High School in 1964. He then attended University of Texas at Austin, earning a Bachelor of Journalism Degree-Advertising Sequence, in 1968. Shortly after graduation, he was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1968. After basic training at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, he was given the MOS (Military Occupation Specialty) of Information Specialist, which meant assignments as an Army photojournalist. His first assignment was in the Public Information Office of the JFK Center for Special Warfare at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served as an assistant editor of “Veritas”, a bi-weekly newspaper for the personnel of Special Warfare units. In April of 1969, he received his orders for Vietnam and was assigned as a photojournalist for the 1st Battalion, 8th Field Artillery of the 25th Infantry Division at Cu Chi, Vietnam. During his 12 month tour with the 1st of the 8th he was awarded “The Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement In Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces in the Republic of Vietnam from 1 January 1970 to 25 January 1970”. Ken was also awarded “The Army Commendation Medal For Meritorious Achievement in the Republic of Vietnam from 1 July 1969 to 15 August 1969.And a second award of the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service from April 1969 to April 1970. He was honorably discharged from the Army on April 10, 1970. After taking post-graduate courses at the University of Texas in 1970 and 1971, he began a long career in the advertising, marketing communications, and publishing businesses. He worked for advertising agencies in Austin, Texas, from 1971 to 1993. And for several years he was a partner in a small ad agency in Austin. He moved to Alaska in 1994 and spent three years working in various communications, marketing, and advertising positions. Deciding that Alaskan winters were too cold, too dark and too long, he relocated to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he began a career as an independent advertising sales representative for several magazines published by national associations. In 2006, Ken decided that it was time to return to his Texas roots and relocated to Kerrville, Texas, where he continued to work as an advertising sales representative until his retirement in 1016. Upon his retirement he, along with his brother and a cousin, continued their genealogical research on both paternal and maternal lines, filling numerous notebooks detailing family histories. Always an avid reader, he increased his reading habits during retirement, finding great pleasure in the novels of Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Joseph Conrad, Mark Twain, F. Scott Fitzgerald, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, Leo Tolstoy, Anthony Trollope and many others. He was also interested in reading various histories and biographies that covered such subjects as the Civil War, World War II, the Vietnam War, and politics. One of his goals was to read at least one book every week, and when possible increasing to two or three books a week. In 2020, he founded a Facebook Group for all veterans who served with the 1st Battalion, 8th Field Artillery, of the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam from 1966 to 1971. He posted copies of photos he had taken in Vietnam, as well as various articles that he had written and that were published in Army publications. As membership in the group began to grow, the veterans of the 1st, of the 8th and 25th Infantry began posting their own photos and adding stories of their experiences in Vietnam. Ken continued to add content to the group page as he daily transcribed various records of the battalion’s six year history in Vietnam. He also discovered additional photos of the unit on various military and government websites, which he then added to Facebook group page. Being a graduate of University of Texas, he remained an avid fan of the Longhorn football and baseball teams for the entirety of his life. Ken is survived by his brother, Bill W. Barron and wife Christina of Delta Junction, Alaska; nieces, Laura C. Barron of Anchorage, Alaska and Leah N Barron Collins(husband Ryan) of Anchorage, Alaska; two nephews, Patrick Barron (wife Brenda) of Sweeny, Texas and Richard Barron (wife LaQuita) of Carbon, Texas. Edward Bishop, a former Palacios man, was killed and his brother-in-law seriously injured in an explosion aboard a 43-foot fishing boat in the Harvard Channel at Freeport Tuesday morning. Bishop and Byers were in partnership in the fishing business and Bishop had just recently moved his family to Freeport. The explosion occurred at the dock of the Western Shell Fish company we learn, and Bishop had gone to the boat Tuesday morning. Byers who lives on the boat was asleep in the bunk at the time of the explosion. He leaped overboard and swam to a nearby boat. It is supposed when Bishop entered the boat he went to the engine room, apparently to start the motor when the blast occurred causing the boat to sink almost immediately.

There he worked faithfully for almost 30 years making lifelong acquaintances, co-workers, and friends. When he was not at work, Roy enjoyed his down time. He enjoyed firing up the pit and spending time barbecuing. Roy loved eating hamburgers and could eat one daily. Some of Roy’s other favorite foods included fried chicken, turkey and dressing, and a good German Chocolate cake. In his spare time, he also looked forward to watching basketball, football, and the westerns as well as listening to music and could ‘cut-a-rug’ with the best of them. Roy was a humble, gentle man who was very caring. Although he was reserved, one thing that could put a smile on his face was a pretty girl… Roy loved pretty girls! From playing board games, to responding to others with a unique dry sense of humor, Roy wanted to be around his family. He was committed to and loved his family. He desired to make sure that the next generation was afforded opportunities that were not granted to him and some in his generation. He was determined to purchase books and other school needs for the kids, especially his nieces and nephews to ensure they were given a better chance to succeed. He invested in them and would give them the shirt off his back to help them. Roy spent time talking and sharing with those he was comfortable around. Although he had a humble and quiet demeanor, he was often misunderstood. He was known by many for being a man of few words. He was so quiet that it was even joked that some thought he was unable to speak. However, when people crossed the line with his family, his voice was loud and clear. It was in those moments that others were able to hear and see the strong definite protective nature of Roy. Roy transitioned on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. He will definitely be missed. Those who will often reflect on these and other precious memories of Roy include his siblings: Willard Johnson (Ola) of Houston, TX, Mae Taylor (Jimmie) of Bay City, TX, Millie Wyche of Humble, TX, Willie Boulden (Vickie) of Missouri City, TX, and Marie Taylor of Bay City, TX. Others who will also often reflect on these memories include his brother-in-law Ridel Jackson of Pearland, TX and sister-in-law(s) Helen Boulden of Angleton, TX, and Carolyn Boulden of Bay City, TX, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, loved ones and friends. It is in these times that we reflect on those who transitioned before him including his parents, Roy and Priscilla Boulden, and siblings Tommie Boulden, Milton Boulden, and Nellie Jean Jackson.

Terri enjoyed family gatherings, hanging out, laughing, playing games, picking on each other, and just being together. Let us not forget her favorite season of the year, Football Season. She loved her Oilers and then her Texans. She was a social person, never meeting a stranger and always welcoming to anyone. Those who knew her loved her. She had such a big heart and loved her children & grandchildren beyond measure. She also had an incredibly special love and bond with her cats and squirrel. At times, they were what got her through some of her hardest days. She had many talents. One of everyone’s favorites - her cinnamon rolls. They were amazing. She loved to cook and always cooked enough to feed an army but, in her defense, there were usually extras sitting at the table come dinner time. She also enjoyed crocheting, paint by numbers, and playing cards among other things but what she enjoyed most was being “Nena.” She adored her grandchildren and was so proud of each one of them and their accomplishments thus far. Terri was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Robert “Bob” Brouhon, her parents, Henry & Plama Wilke, baby brother Arthur “Brent” Wilke, big brother, Henry “Bio” Wilke, and her big sister, Dianne Valcik. Remaining to cherish Terri’s memory are her daughters, Brandi Cowan (Chuck) and Amy Quiroga (Eddy Jr.) both of Van Vleck, TX, big sister, Karen Belcolore of North Carolina, and “Lil’” sister Jennifer N. Kidwell (Todd) of Danevang, TX. “Nena” will be remembered by her grandchildren, Patrick Perkins currently of Yankton, SD (son of Amy), Lainie Quiroga, Addison & Piper Cowan, Eddy III “Boobie” and Luke “Fatty Daddy” Quiroga, all of Van Vleck, TX. She will also be lovingly remembered by nieces & nephews and even a few unofficially adopted children, who will miss her dearly. Terri’s daughters, along with close family and friends, will gather to celebrate Terri’s life, with all her favorite things, on October 19th. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

We gather in loving memory of Elizabeth Ann Brown. Known affectionately as “Mickey” to all whose lives she touched over her 85 years, she passed away on May 10th, 2024 in Bay City, Texas. Born to parents Jesse New and Gertrude Quattlebaum in Speaks, Texas on March 23rd, 1939, Mickey grew up with nine siblings. Marked by a selfless spirit and unwavering devotion to loved ones, Mickey put the needs of others before her own and offered comfort and support in times of difficulty. Another of Mickey’s most memorable traits was her good cheer. A real “cut-up”, she brought smiles to the faces of all fortunate enough to know her. Mickey was a devoted Christian, finding strength and solace in her faith. A wonderful cook, she delighted in preparing delicious meals for her family. She also had a passion for crocheting, generously sharing beautiful handmade items with family and friends as symbols of her caring and thoughtfulness. Leslie Jimmie Brown, affectionately known as Les, passed away on July 10, 2023 in Port Lavaca, TX at the age of 70. He was born on April 24, 1953 in Ganado TX to Oscar Homer and Catherine Lenz Brown. Les was intensely devoted to his family, which was not difficult for him. He was known to be one of the luckiest guys around, especially being married to his one and only, Verna Kay Wright Brown. He proudly celebrated a mind-blowing 50 years of marriage with her in September of 2022. Even down to his last days of his life, you knew his love for her did not grow dim. They endured much together. Their strong bond surely has inspired all who have met them. For decades, Les spent his professional career in the oilfield scene. Starting from the bottom (where the oil is!), he skillfully climbed the ladder and retired as foreman, making the West Ranch in Vanderbilt his stomping ground. Les had a knack for reeling in good times. In his younger years, you could find him racing cars and dancing. As the years went by, you could find him cruising along the coast or casting his line for the big catch. His wonderful personality kept friends and family hooked. While growing up, Dad was always one to look up to for advice and encouragement. This could have been strict or lenient, but we listened to it. Sometimes it may not have stuck but his discipline helped us be who we are today. As his son and daughter, we were blessed to have Les as our father. Dad worked tirelessly to raise us with the help from Mom. We are so thankful to have had Dad in our lives to have given us a loving home. Along with being a good husband and a good father, Les took on the beautiful role of being our Pop. Each of his grandchildren have a memory of their own to proclaim him “grandfather of the lifetime”. He had watched the older ones grow into the fine young adults that they are today and had enjoyed spending time with the younger ones at sporting events and the fair. Les is survived by his wife, Verna Kay; children, Jennifer Brown-Herrera and Keith Brown; grandchildren, Jacqueline Herrera, Justine (Jesse) Gauff, Joshua (Shelby) Herrera, Nicole Brown, Brice Brown and Blake Brown; and great-grandson, Cooper Herrera. He is also survived by his siblings, Dianna (Charlie) Michalik, Doris (Albert) Malaer, Homer (Cheryl) Brown and Gloria (Ronnie) Benner; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Brown and Kathy Brown; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Les is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy Brown; brothers, Ralph and Kenneth Brown; as well as his in-laws, Vernon and Alice Wright. Visitation will be held Saturday, July 15, 2023 from 6-8PM at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 16, 2023 at 3PM at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home, with interment following at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing, Texas. He leaves us all with cherished memories, laughs, and swelling hearts, knowing that he made a lasting impact on those around him. His laughter will be missed, along with his bright happy eyes. Memorials may be sent to Point Comfort Methodist Church at PO Box 787, Point Comfort TX 77978. Thoughts and memories may be shared at www.richardsoncolonial.com.
