O. J. Foraker about 65 yrs of
Collegeport, was found dead in his home last night. A letter found
in the home designates he had a brother, Fred, living in Winlow,
Oklahoma on Rural Rt. 2.—abstracted from the obituary appearing in
the Matagorda County Tribune, October 9, 1941
Otis Joseph Foraker
The discovery of the body of O. J. Foraker, aged resident of the
Collegeport vicinity in his home was reported last night by C. J.
Corporon, a neighbor, according to information received today from
County Traffic Officer Guy Barnett. Mr. Corporon, according to his
statement, had missed seeing the deceased for several days, and
becoming curious went over to his house about four miles from
Collegeport and looked in the window, about 2 pm Monday. He saw Mr.
Foraker laying on the bed fully clothed, but with his boots off.
Immediately upon going into the house, he determined that the
occupant was dead and then drove to Tintop to contact officials.
Unable to secure telephonic communication from there he drove to
Palacios. There he got in touch with Justice of Peace G. R.
Holliday and Dr. J. R. Wagner.
Upon leaving Palacios, they encountered Office Barnett, who then
accompanied them to the scene of death. Dr. Wagner’s examination
proved that death was the result of heart failure and that was the
verdict by the Justice of Peace at the inquest.
Officer Barnett reported that there was no evidence of foul play,
and various testimony from acquaintances of the deceased stated that
he had been subject to fainting spells lately.
In a search of the residence, Officer Barnett discovered a letter
from Mr. Foraker being written to his brother, Fred, living in
Willow, Okla, on rural route 2, which determined the dead man’s age
at about 65 years.
Due to the condition of the body, it was brought immediately to the
Bay City cemetery by Taylor Bros. and interred last night after the
inquest.
As far as the officials could determine, the aged man had no
relatives in this section. He was reported by neighbors as having
been in bad health for the past year, and evidently the culmination
of his condition was his death, undiscovered for some five days. The Daily Tribune, October 7, 1941 Courtesy of Faye Cunningham
