Eugene Matthews
Funeral services for Gene Matthews,
76, longtime resident of Matagorda County and Bay City,
will be held at 1:30 pm Sunday from Enterprise Baptist
Church.
Mr. Matthews died Wednesday night at
Matagorda General Hospital following an extended
illness. A native of Houston, where he was born Feb. 7,
1886, Mr. Matthews spent his early years in the Pledger
community and had resided in Bay City for the past 40
years.
He was a deacon in the Enterprise
Baptist Church, where he had been Sunday School
Superintendent for 18 years before his recent illness.
He was also a member of the AF&AM Lodge, St. James
Chapter No. 217.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs.
Laura Matthews of Bay City; three sons, Elwood of Los
Angeles, Calif., Harry Paul of Houston, Marvin of Bay
City; two daughters, Mrs. Arizola Bell of Los Angeles
and Mrs. Faye Lewis of Bay City; and nine grandchildren.
Interment will be made in Eastview
Cemetery. Penn Funeral Home is in charge of
arrangements.
