Dr. J. Randolph Allen, age 22, born in New York, was enumerated in the 1870 Matagorda County census. His wife was Minna, age 17, born in Texas.
Family tradition claimed that Lucy
Williams and her sister, Sarah "Sallie," were murdered by their
brother-in-law, Dr. Allen, who was in love with Lucy while married
to their sister, Wilhelmina. When Lucy became engaged to Henry
Eidlebach, Dr. Allen poisoned her out of jealousy, and then poisoned
Sallie to divert suspicion. He fled the town with the Williams boys
in hot pursuit, but he escaped. Later the family got a letter from
him from Africa in which he told that the Williams boys had been all
around him, but he had buried himself in the sand. Sallie and Lucy
were buried on the Matagorda Peninsula and their graves are lost. |

Dr. J. W. Benton lived on Caney in Matagorda County and practiced medicine as well as being a farmer.

At "Gibson"...we met
Dr. J. W. Benton, of the same family tree as "Old Bullion" [Thomas
Hart Benton], who informed us that he had exploded by practical
test the barnacle idea that a white man could not cultivate Caney
soil, as, with improved implements, he had the present year
cultivated, alone, fifty acres of cotton; and it is luxuriant, and
as clean of weeds as mi ladi's boudoir. Dr. Benton also has an apple
orchard, the trees of which are laden with an excellent quality of
fruit. In addition to the bucolics the doctor practices medicine
over a large area, and has plenty of time to spare in observance of
the social amenities. It may not prove uninteresting to some of our
fair readers, and the OLD CAP, has not a few, to be informed that
the doctor is still heart-whole and fancy free, and that this is
leap year,--that Quandrennial Godsend to timid bachelors. Culver, is

Dr. Hester was living in Matagorda County in 1910 and was listed as a retired physician which is confusing since he was living in Victoria County in 1900 and listed as a tinner. In 1880 he was living in DeWitt County and enumerated as a farmer. If he was a physician, he wouldn't have practiced in Matagorda County if retired, but was probably called on for help by those who were ill.

Dr. Thomas Henry Hood (b 4 Sep 1862 in WI and d
20 May 1948) was the son of Joseph M. Hood (1837-1882) and Mary Ann
Seiders Hood (1839-1922) Children: Dr. T. H. Hood, 85, Former Resident Here, Dies in Oklahoma Dr. Thomas Henry Hood, 85, a resident of Palacios for 30 years, died at Muskogee, Oklahoma, Thursday May 20 and was buried in the Palacios Cemetery Sunday afternoon beside the remains of his wife who died here five years ago. Funeral services were conducted at the St. John's Episcopal church t 4 p. m. taking the place of the regular Sunday service, Rev. Aubry C. Maxted officiating. Dr. Hood designed and supervised construction of the church a number of years ago. Ceremonies at the cemetery were in charge of Palacios Lodge 990, A. F. and A. M. where complete Masonic rituals were performed under the direction of the District Deputy Grand Master George Wilson, of El Campo, amid a profusion of floral offerings from Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin and Oklahoma as well as from nearby friends. Masonic pall bearers were P. T. Sartwelle, H. C. Campbell, Joe Feather, Bill Regan, Raymond Hart and Tom Friery. Members of the immediate family who were able to attend services here included two sons, and a daughter: Dr. J. T. Hood, Chicago dentist, Robin Hood, Muskogee, Oklahoma newspaper publisher; Mrs. Dorothy Marcy [Macy?], Chicago. Also here was one grandson, Richard Hood, who was raised in Palacios and after graduation from the local school with honors, won his degree at Armour Institute in Chicago and is now conducting jet propulsion research for the federal government at Cleveland. Dr. Hood's other son, Professor J. Douglas Hood of Cornell University, is a member of a scientific expedition now in South America and therefore unable to attend the last rites. Other survivors include a grandson, Kenneth Hood, Rochester, N. Y., a grandson, Robin Macy, Chicago, a grand daughter, Barbara Hood, Ithaca, N. Y. and two great grand children. Dr. Hood died after several days of sharply declining strength without complicating illness and in complete possession of his faculties to a few minutes of the end. He had spent the winter with his son in Muskogee where he had become known as "that grand old man." When chapel services were held there were many of the civic clubs paid official tribute because of the good humor and kindly acts by which he made himself well known despite his short stay in Muskogee. He was born at Spring Green, Wisconsin, Sept. 4, 1862, eldest of a large family. His early manhood was spent in Wyoming where he operated his construction business at Laramie. It was there he met the Canadian girl whom he married, Eva Dickson, who was active in Palacios during her last 25 years. Dr. Hood graduated from the Chicago Dental College in 1892 after first studying medicine in the Chicago College of Physicians and Surgeons. He retired to Palacios in 1919. He was a member of many Masonic bodies, including the Palacios lodge. He was a past commander of Columbia Commandry Knights Templar, Chicago, and twice past patron of one of the largest Chicago Eastern Star chapters. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner. We join the host of friends here and elsewhere in extending sympathy to the bereaved. Palacios Beacon, May 27, 1948
