The McCamly Family

The McCamly family lived in Matagorda, Texas for a long time and moved to Casper, Wyoming around 1918. William Leake McCamly (May 18, 1876 – October 14, 1948, referred as Bo) was the key person to link the family from Texas to Wyoming.
 

Bo’s Grandparents

John W. McCamly (1803 /1821? - ) was born in New York. He married Sarah Frances Davis (1826 - ) on July 16, 1846 in Matagorda County, Texas. Sarah was from Tennessee. They had three children: William (January 20, 1849 -   ), John (1851 - 1929), and Frederick (January 28, 1854 – November 18, 1887).


Bo’s Parents

William A. McCamly was born in Texas on January 20, 1849. He was a physician and married Sophia Preisig (1855 - June 26, 1925) on March 29, 1873 in Matagorda. They had a daughter Annie (1874 -  ) and a son William L. (May 18, 1876 - October 14, 1948). Sophia’s parents came from Switzerland. Bo’s father passed away on November 2, 1908. After that, Sophia married William. E. Austin (1855 - ).


Bo’s Uncle

John W. McCamly married Valentine Northington. Valentine was born in Texas. Her father was born in Texas and her mother was born in Virginia. John and Valentine had a son Wheeler (1902? -  ) and a daughter Marinne (1905? -   ). From the census of 1910, John lived with his father-in-law John F Northington (1850 -   ) and sister-in-law Alice Northington (1879 -   ). John F. Northington’s father was born in Texas and his mother was born in Alabama.


Bo’s Family

Bo married Ada Elizabeth Rugeley (1878 – March, 1914) in Bay City, Texas on February 18, 1901. Ada’s father Edgar P. Rugeley (January 3, 1851 – February 25, 1913) was from Prussia and her mother Patti Matthews Rugeley (1851 - 1943) was from Switzerland. Bo and Ada had three children: Anthony Rugely McCamly (son), Willie Austin McCamly (daughter) and Annie Dell McCamly (daughter).

 Bo and his family lived in Denver, Colorado for a short time; then moved to Casper, Wyoming. In 1919 Ada (1879 – April 8, 1936) and Bo married in San Antonio, Texas. This was his second marriage. Ada was born in Indiana. Bo married Alice K. (1898 – July 12, 1942). From 1944 (or 1943) to 1947, Bo and Murl had a short marriage.


Bo’s Children

Anthony Rugeley McCamly (February 27, 1904 – April 2,1968, referred as Anthony) was born on February 27, 1904 in Bay City, Texas. Anthony married Joreene Iba Nola Hagler (July 26, 1910 - September 25, 1995) on July 16, 1928 in Greeley, Colorado. Joreene was born in Oklahoma. Her father Andrew Binefield Hagler and mother Mary Omah Houfman were from Missouri. Joreene had three brothers and four sisters, including Nell McDonald (Roseburg, Oregon) and Verda Terry (Weoser, Idaho). Anthony and Joreene had a daughter: Shirley Lee McCamly (December 7, 1929 – February 7, 2004, referred as Lee). After Anthony passed away in 1968, Joreene married James C. Ealum (February 11, 1912  -  August 14,1993) on Oct. 11, 1969. Lee was born in Caldwell, Idaho (as tradition, her mother went back to her hometown to give birth to Lee) on December 7, 1929. She married John Weaver (referred as Jay) on June 18, 1949 and passed away on February 7, 2004. Jay offered a scholarship to Casper College female students in Lee’s memory.

            Willie Austin McCamly married Earl Edwin Cortes. They had two children: Jane Cortes (Living) and Earl Cortes (Living). Jane married Bob Davidson and they had no children. Earl married Sue and they had two children.

Annie Dell McCamly married Thomas Wheatley. They had two children: Tom Jr. (Living) and William (1938? -      ).

Former Resident Dies in Wyoming

Mrs. E. H. Highley received word this morning from Mrs. Cortes of Casper, Wyo., that her father, W. L. “Bo” McCamly, had passed away. He will be buried in Casper, Wyo., Friday.

Residents of the city who have lived here several years, will remember Mr. McCamly, as he had lived in Bay City many years before moving to Wyoming many years ago.

He is survived by two daughters and one son.

Former Resident Here Succumbs After Short Illness

Mr. William Leake McCamly, age 72, native of Matagorda County passed away at the National Memorial Hospital in Casper, Wyo., on Thursday, October 14, after a short illness.

Mr. McCamly had been a resident of Casper for many years and was widely known. During his residence there he was active in all civic organizations and agencies. He had been associated with the Texas Company since 1911 and had been a consignee in his district since 1926.

In addition to his gasoline business, Mr. McCamly was also president of the Guaranty Federal Savings and Loan Association.

Mr. McCamly, known to his friends as “Bo,” was born in Matagorda County in 1876. In 1901 he and Miss Ada Rugeley were married in Bay City.

Mrs. McCamly passed away in 1913. He is survived by one son, A. H. McCamly of Casper and two daughters, Mrs. E. E. Cortes of Houston and Mrs. Thomas Wheaton of Casper. There are five grandchildren, Jane and Earl Cortes, Shirley McCamly and Thomas and William Wheatley.

Mr. McCamly was a member of the Masons and the Shrine, the Elks lodge, and the Casper Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the Salvation Army advisory board, and had served on the Natrona County welfare board. He was appointed to the welfare board in 1935 and resigned the position in 1937 because of the pressure of business. During most of that period he served as chairman of the board. Mr. McCamly also served on the board of trustees of Natrona County Memorial Hospital for a number of years and was president of the board for one year.

He was a member of the Episcopal church.

Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at 2 p. m., at the Horstman-Gay chapel, with the Rev. Marcus Hitchcock of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church officiating. Interment was in Highland Cemetery.

A. R. McCamly Dies at 63

Anthony Rugeley McCamly, of 3630 South Poplar, died Tuesday afternoon at the age of 63.

He was born Feb. 27, 1904 in Bay City, Texas, and graduated from East Denver High School. He married Joreene Hagler on July 16, 1928, at Greeley, Colo.

McCamly and his father operated the Texaco bulk station in Casper from 1924 until 1948. He sold the business in 1949 and retired.

He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Natrona Lodge No. 51, the Consistory of Cheyenne, Korein Temple of Rawlins, Casper Shrine Club, Royal Order of Jesters, Casper Country Club, and the Casper Boat Club.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Shirley Lee Weaver; two sisters, Mrs. E. R. Mosby of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. T. F. Wheatly of Denver; three nephews and one niece.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Bustard Funeral Home.

Casperites Will Return Home From Germany This Week

Returning to the United States are 1st Lt. and Mrs. John J. Weaver, who are coming home from Weisbaden, Germany, after more than a year with the occupation forces of the U. S. Army stationed in Germany.

Word has been received by Mrs. Weaver's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. McCamly of 1243 South Ash, that they were to sail from Bramerhaven Port, Dec. 5, headed stateside, and would land in New York about Dec. 15. The Weavers hope to arrive in Casper to spend the holidays with their family and friends. Lieutenant Weaver has two sisters residing in Casper, Mrs. Iris Witt and Mrs. Inez Medley. Mrs. Weaver is the former Shirley McCamly.
