Blessings Budget of Interesting News

Russell Matthes returned to school on Monday after an absence of a week, due to a tonsil and adenoid operation at Doctor Loos' hospital on Friday.

Miss Blake Terry left on Thursday for Phoenix, Ariz., where she will spend the winter with her sister and family.

Mr. R. R. Terry is back on his mail route again. Mr. R. E. Williams substituted for Mr. Terry during a few days illness.

Everyone is glad to see the sun again after a week of rainy weather. The farmers are hoping to have at least a month of dry weather to their land ready for another crop.

Mr. W. K. Roberts was a business visitor in Blessing Tuesday.

J. O. Murphy is changing his grocery to a Red and White Chain store.

Mr. and Mrs. C. W. White attended the funeral of Mrs. Albert Johnson who died at her home near Markham on Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. H. L. White and family spent Sunday with the C. W. White family.

Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Tyson and sons, Samuel and Junior of Ness City, Kan., returned on Sunday to their winter home two miles southwest of Blessing. They report a fine trip down and declare they are delighted to be back again.

Sunday Services Sunday School

Rev. G. F. Gillespie of the Presbyterian Church at Palacios held services in the Blessing community church on Sunday evening at 7:30. A large congregation gathered to hear Mr. Gillespie.

Rev. Father Armond Weber of San Antonio, has been appointed as resident priest at Blessing.

Birthday Party.

Margaret Ruth Matthes entertained several of her small friends on Saturday afternoon in honor of her third birthday. Margaret Ruth was very much delighted with the pretty gifts which were brought to her. Games of different kinds were played by the little folk until time to light the candles on the birthday cake. Mrs. Matthes served cake and cocoa after which the children went home. The guests were Virginia Lucas, Mary Newton, Audrey Lee Powell, Louise Dyer, Ralph Guynes, Billy Boy Linder, Billy Vogt Powell and Russell Matthes.

Yeager's Bridge Part.

Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Yeager, assisted by their daughter, Mary Deane, and Madge, entertained the bridge club at her home on Thursday evening. The following guests made up the six tables: Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Nester, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Price of Palacios, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Duller, Mr. and Mrs. V. Powell, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Matthes, Mesdames W. O. Selkirk, Della V. Braden, Sally Rogers, M. D. Walker, J. F. Beard, Misses Margaret Nester, Lois Pickel, Lula Van O'Bannon, Juanita Webb, Dorothy Murphy, Grace Walker, Esther Walker, Mr. E. G. Nance and Mr. Paul Braden.

After playing five games, the high score prizes were presented to Mrs. Chas. E. Duller and Mr. V. Powell, low score prize to Miss Juanita Webb and Mr. C. W. Nester. Delicious refreshments of fruit salad, hot biscuits, cheese straws, nut cookies and hot tea.

Blessing Box Supper Is Well Attended

Miss Ruth Smith of Houston, was the weekend guest of Miss Margaret Lois Sanford.

Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Corse of Collegeport, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Duller.

Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Matthes and children and Mrs. Della Braden, spent Sunday with the Roy Nelson family of Collegeport.

Mrs. M. H. Landin spent Saturday with her sister and family, Mrs. A. F. Landin of Francitas. She was accompanied home by her nephew, Harry Landin.

Mrs. L. C. Cornelius, Misses Esther and Grace Walker, spent the weekend in Houston shopping.

H. I. White and Crawford Barnett and John Reynolds of Bay City, attended the special meeting at Blessing Blue lodge on Thursday night.

C. W. Nester, Joe Feather, J. G. Walker and George Lawson of Palacios, attended the Auxiliary Oyster supper and afterward the special meeting of Blessing Blue lodge here Thursday night.

Mr. W. H. Clements and Rev. G. F. Gillespie, Mrs. J. G. Walker, Mrs. C. W. Nester, Mrs. Marion Nester and Mrs. Fits, were among those from Palacios who attended the Auxiliary box supper at the community house on Thursday night.

Blessing visitors to Bay City on Saturday included Mrs. Chas. E. Duller and Miss Dorothy, Mr. and Mrs.. Pete Graff, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Schultz, Mr. and Mrs.. A. F. Foisy and Miss Jenny Comeal, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Brown, Mrs. Della Braden and Mr. Paul Braden.

The Blessing Produce Co., a newly organized firm composed of W. A. Sanford, Jr. and Leo Neuszer have hauled nearly 600 turkeys to the Houston market during the past week.

Mrs. A. R. Matthes and Mrs. Della Braden entertained the Women's Auxiliary of the Blessing community church on Wednesday afternoon. Twelve women attended the meeting. Mrs. V. Powell led the devotional and conducted the study of the home mission book, "Near Neighbors." She was assisted by Mrs. C. E. Harter, who gave the Indian work, Mrs. C. W. White, who gave the Negro work and Mrs. A. R. Matthes, who discussed, "Church Building." After a short business session, the meeting adjourned to meet with Mrs. Hattie Wheeler in December. The hostesses served pumpkin pie and coffee.

Box Supper

The box supper at the community house on Friday night was quite well attended. The sum of $50 was taken in by the sale of boxes, peanuts, cocoa and coffee. The supper was given by the high school to benefit the athletic fund. Several prizes were awarded as follows: A five-pound box of candy won by Ellen Louise Goodman; a three-pound box of candy for the second best won by Olla Mae Schulte and a one-pound box for the third best looking box was won by Hazel Guynes. A one-pound box of candy was awarded to Dorothy Murphy as the best looking girl present and a carton of cigarettes to Roy Bean for the ugliest man present.

The judges were: Mrs. Leslie Glaze, Miss Crouch and Mrs. W. H. Lindner.

Auxiliary Oyster Supper

The Women's Auxiliary of the Blessing community church served an oyster supper on Thursday night. The proceeds, $28, will be used to help pay for the gas stoves which have recently been installed in the church, community house. After supper a number of guests played dominoes ad forty-two.

Mrs. A. R. Matthes was in Bay City Saturday morning on business.

Mrs. R. Penchin and daughter, Elizabeth, and Hattie Sue, were in Bay City on Saturday morning.

Mrs. Chas. E. Duller spent Thursday afternoon with her mother, Mrs. S. W. Corse at Collegeport.

The Women's Auxiliary of the Presbyterian church met at the home of Mrs. V. Powell on Wednesday. They annual election off officers was held with Mrs. Della Braden, chairman, Mrs. C. W. White, secretary.

The basketball boys covered themselves with glory on Friday afternoon when they won over Collegeport.

Mrs. E. M. Tyson and Mrs. H. H. Gallatin were in Bay City Saturday.

Mrs. L. C. Cornelius, Ruby Bowers, Della Braden, A. R. Matthes and Mr. E. G. Nance saw the play presented by Palacios high school on Friday night.

Mr. C. A. Lucas went to Wharton on Thursday.

Hodge Pickens of Victoria was in Blessing Wednesday night.

Mrs. M. D. Walker, Miss Esther and Grace, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Walker in Palacios.

Blessing people have enjoyed the Gipsy Smith, Jr. revival. Mrs. Della Braden, Paul Braden, Mrs. O. A. Yeager, Misses Mary Deane and Madge Yeager attended on Wednesday night.

Mrs. O. A. Yeager and daughters, Mrs. Mabel F. Selkirk and Mrs. Jane Jackson attended on Friday night. Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Price and daughter, Maxine, and Madge Yeager, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Duller and daughter, Dorothy, Mrs. Ruby Bowers and Evelyn Anderson and Mr. and Mrs. C. W. White, all attended on Sunday night.

Mrs. E. M. Tyson and Clarice Gallatin spent Sunday afternoon in Palacios.

Mr. and Mrs. Bates Wilson of Houston, spent the week-end with Mrs. Wilson's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Gillespie.

Wanda White celebrated her birthday on Friday afternoon by entertaining her small friends with a party.

Mayor W. O. Selkirk is at home from San Antonio for a few days.

Jesse May Schulte, who has been working in Houston for several weeks, spent the week end with her parents.

Walter Allen Sanford was at home for the week-end.

Mrs. Esther Beard and son, Jno. Warren, returned on Sunday from Eagle Lake, where they have been for the past week on account of the illness of John Warren, who is much improved at this time. Miss Madge Yeager taught for Mrs. Beard during her absence.

Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Corse were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Duller.

The Canyon Kiddies had a wiener roast on Saturday afternoon.

The students of Blessing high school went to the underpass on Thursday night for a wiener roast. Every one had a jolly good time.

The senior girls played basketball at Bay City and although they lost heavily to the Bay City girls, enjoyed playing in the splendid new gymnasium. Besides the team, Olla Mae Schulte, Leona and Myrtle Smith, Josephine Nicholson, Jack Williams, Margaret, Lois Sanford, Evelyn Anderson and Lucile Jackson, Grace Walker, coach, Miss Esther Walker, Madge Yeager, Margaret Nester, Miss Lula Vern O'Bannon, Juanita Webb, Mr. E. G. Nancy, Bert Logan, Mrs. Albert White, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Matthes went over.

The Palacios boys played Bay City boys and won a real victory.

P. P. Terry went to Phoenix, Ariz., on Saturday and returned Tuesday with the body of his sister who died on pneumonia. Funeral services were conducted at Ashby cemetery by Reverend Ray of the First Baptist church of Palacios. She was the daughter of W. S. Terry of Blessing and had lived for many years in Arizona, the past few years on account of her health, having long suffered from asthma.

Mr. and Mrs. Gale of La Ward, spent Sunday with Mrs. Gales' parents, Mrs. and Mrs. John Jackson.

Blessing

Council for Gulf Girl Reserve Club Organized.

A meeting of the council members for the Gulf Girl Reserve club was called for Tuesday night at the home of Mrs. V. Powell. Eleven women responded and a delightful evening was spent. Miss Charlie Mae Carter was present. She gave a very interesting and instructive talk on the work, aim and purpose of the Girl Reserve club. Mrs. V. Powell, acting as chairman, held an election of officers with the following elected.

Mrs. V. Powell, chairman; Mrs. Albert White, vice chairman;  Mrs. L. C. Cornelius, treasurer and Mrs. A. R. Matthes, secretary.

Plans were made for regular monthly meetings at the homes of the members at the homes of the members on the second Tuesday night of each month. Mrs. Powell with Mrs. White assisting, served fruit and salad, crackers angel food cake and cocoa.

Miss Juanita Webb has taken a great deal of interest in the work with the girls and she is the advisor.

Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Gillespie and Mrs. Gillespie's cousin, Mrs. Maddox of Houston and Margaret Wilson, a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gillespie, went to Houston on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Gillespie will also visit their daughter, Mrs. Marvin Bradford of San Antonio before they return.

Misses Madge and Mary Deane Yeager and Mr. W. P. Braden, Misses Lula Van O'Bannon, Juanita Webb, Grace Walker, Margaret Nester and Mr. E. G. Nance drove to Houston on Sunday to see the play "The Strange Interlude" at the Palace.

Mrs. Esther Beard and son, John Warner, went to Eagle Lake on Saturday afternoon returning Sunday night. They were accompanied by Mrs. Westmoreland, Wilmer Westmoreland and a number of their friends who returned to Eagle Lake the same night.

A very fine banquet was served at the Hotel Palacios on Friday night by the O. E. S. of Palacios, to the Masons and their families. Blessing Masons and their families were also invited as well as the officers of Bay City, El Campo and Wharton lodges. The Blessing people who attended were Mr. and Mrs. W. King and sons, Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Yeager and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Matthes, Mr. W. P. Braden and Mrs. Della Braden.

Mrs. S. W. Corse of Collegeport, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Chas. E. Duller. Mr. Corse came from Collegeport on Sunday afternoon.

Mrs. A. O. Yeager and Madge were in Bay City on Saturday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Duller entertained the A. O. Yeager family on Tuesday night with a dinner party.

Mr. J. W. Shuey returned to his home in Citrus Grove after spending a week with his sister, Mrs. Della Braden.

Bishop Quinn of Houston will preach in  Blessing on Monday evening, March 9. Service will be held at the community church.

Rev. G. F. Gillespie did not come to Blessing for the usual first Sunday night on account of the very bad weather conditions.

Mildred and Williams King, Jr., spent Friday night with Russell and Margaret Ruth Matthes while their parents attended the banquet at Palacios.

Margaret Wilson spent Thursday and Friday with Mrs. Braden.

Will Korn and J. W. Shuey were in Blessing on Tuesday on business.

Mrs. Cornelius and Miss Esther Walker drove to Bay City Wednesday afternoon.

Mrs. Stall and Mrs. Metcalf spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. H. Bentz in Francitas.

Mr. Arthur Matthes, Mr. Paul Braden, and Mr. Otho Robinson of Louise, made a business trip to Houston Monday.

Miss Mary Dean Yeager, Miss Helen Yeager, Mrs. Paul Braden, and Mr. Sam Cowde went to the dance in Wharton Saturday night.

Mrs. R. T. Phillips, Mrs. Grady Walker, and Mrs. L. B. Perkins, of Palacios made several calls in Blessing Wednesday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Yeager, Misses Mary Dean and Helen Yeager, and Mr. Paul Braden were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Phillips in Palacios Sunday night.

Last Saturday Mrs. John Beard drove to Houston, taking with her, John Warren, Miss Juanita Webb, Mrs. Lulu Van Watson, Miss Flanagan and T. W. Rhodes.

Mr. and Mrs. Yeager, Misses Mary Dean and Helen Yeager, will start on a drive north to Stephenville and then on to Oklahoma to visit their daughter Madge, May 26th.

Mrs. John A. Mobley, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Story, and her son, Brooks Mobley, all of Houston, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Pierce over the week-end.

A very nice dance given in the Community House on Thursday night. The Palacios Orchestra furnished the music. They will give another dance here on Friday night, May 27th.

Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Matthes and three children, accompanied by Mrs. and Miss Braden, visited in Galveston Saturday and Sunday, guests of Miss Clara Matthes, dietitian at John Sealy Hospital.

The following guests spent Sunday with Mrs. H. Walker at Hotel Blessing: Mr. and Mrs. Ruby Nills of Alief, Mr. and Mrs. A. Thomas and children of El Maton, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Williams of El Maton.

The fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh grades of Blessing School celebrated the closing of school with a picnic at the Underpass, under the supervision of their teachers, Mrs. Beard and Miss Yeager. A school bus and several cars drove the children and the bountiful supply of food out at 11 a. m.

On Saturday, May 21st, twenty-five Catholic Children received Instructions and on Sunday received their first private Communion, in the Catholic church in Blessing. These children were from different parts of St Peter's Parish. Last Wednesday night the Bohemian priest, Father Jansky from Hillje, preached in the Catholic church. Next Wednesday, May 25th regular May Services will be held at 8 p. m.

Friday night, May 20th, Commencement Exercises were held in the Blessing Community House, at 8 p. m. The following Program was given:

Those graduating from the seventh grade into High school were Pauline Smith, Oscar Swenson, Nettie Hendley and Alma Vavra of El Maton.
From the Blessing grammar school were graduated Inez Rickaway, Emil Nedbalek, Winnie Mott, Winfred Hutson, Mattie Nora Guynes, George L. Cornelius, Grace Schulte, Fred Rickaway, Jeanie Mott, Harry Guynes, Bessie Dedek, Joe Clyde Anderson.

The children awarded the State Department of Health certificate for carrying out the five-point project as part of the Health work this year were William King, Emma Bridges, Edith Clapp and Roy Williams. Those children who carried out four points of the star and were in the process of having defects corrected were given blue ribbons as follows: Anna Grace Wachter, James Rickaway, John Henry Duffy, Elna Jensen, Margaret Guynes, Martin Perez, Julia Vaclavick, Clinton Pierce, Judy Jalufka, Clara Mae Neal, Lora Ogg, Leonarda Nedbalek, and Rosa May Nedbalek. This work was done under the direction of Mrs. Patricia Martyn, County Health Nurse, and Mrs. Beard supervising.

The Library and Community House Committees held a business meeting Thursday afternoon and voted to start the work of enlarging the Community House kitchen by tearing out the projector room partition. A larger kitchen has been needed for a long time and new cup-boards are being added to take care of the new china the Woman's Council is buying. A new dressing room is being figured on and will be added in the near future. Mrs. Della Braden was appointed 3rd Vice Chairman and one of the active Librarians in place of Mrs. Vogt Powell who has moved away. Thursday night Mrs. Yeager, Mrs. Albert White and Mrs. Pierce catalogued books until midnight while the dance was in progress.

Blessing

Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Bump have announced the marriage of their daughter, Mae, to Mr. H. E. Powell of Kirbyville, Texas, the ceremony taking place Saturday, Dec. 23 in Wharton. Mr. and Mrs. Powell spent Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Bump in Blessing driving on to Houston that afternoon and will be at home in Kirbyville, where Mr. Powell is employed with an oil company. Mrs. Powell has been one of the most popular and well liked young girls in Blessing and was to have graduated in May from the Blessing High School. Her friends are grieved to lose her but all join in wishing this young couple every happiness that life has to offer.

Mr. and Mrs. Curtis (Fay Sanford Curtis) were weekend Christmas visitors of Mrs. Curtis' mother, Mrs. Dollie Sanford.

Mrs. Allen J. Smith and Mrs. W. W. Heffelfinger motored to Blessing from Philadelphia last week arriving here on Friday, Dec. 22. Mrs. Heffelfinger will leave for Minneapolis on December 27 after spending Christmas with members of her family in Blessing.

Mr. and Mrs. R. Mills of Sugarland, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Walker of Palacios and their families, spent Christmas with their relatives the Walkers at the Hotel Blessing.

Mr. Paul Pickel of Matthes spent Christmas at home with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. C. Pickel in Blessing.

Mr. and Mrs. Fate Dobson of Port Arthur spent Christmas at home with Mr. Dobson's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Murphy of Blessing.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert White entertained with a turkey dinner on Sunday night, Christmas eve. Their guests were Mr. and Mrs. Avon Harter, Miss Lucile Jackson, Mrs. Hattie Wheeler, Miss Jack Williams, Mr. Lorraine Rhodes, Mr. Paul Wheeler and Mr. George Schoeps.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Braden and Miss Helen Yeager attended the Monday morning Christmas dance at Columbus.

Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Duller had as their Christmas guests home for the week-end, their daughters, Mrs. Gregory of Houston, Miss Dorothy Duller of Corpus Christi and Mr. Ethan Duller of Houston. Mrs. Gregory and Mrs. Ethan Duller returned to Houston Christmas afternoon. Miss Dorothy will remain here for several days visit with her parents.

Mrs. John Beard, her sister, Mrs. Walker, and John Warren are spending the holidays with Mrs. Westmoreland in Eagle Lake.

Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Pierce had as their Christmas day guests Mrs. Allen J. Smith, Mrs. W. W. Heffelfinger, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Farwell of Palacios and Mr. Walter Heffelfinger.

Among those who had "open house" all day Christmas for their friends, were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Braden, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Matthes, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Pierce.

The sanitary and health survey work is progressing in this section of the county. Mrs. Pierce is in charge of the survey with Mrs. Albert White as assistant. The Texas state department of health is making this survey, with a view to improving the sanitary and health conditions all over Texas. They are asking everyone who does not have approved sanitary conditions, to install either septic tanks and modern plumbing--or to install a pit-type toilet. Mr. Geiger of Bay City is the engineer in charge and anyone who is willing to pay for the cement, sand and materials needed for building one of these out-houses, will have the labor furnished to them free. Mr. Geiger will direct the work and use the county forms for the concrete work. The materials needed will cost under five dollars if the building is in good enough condition to use and if there is old lumber to line the pit with. Materials needed in addition to the old lumber for lining the pit and the house itself, will be two sacks of cement, about 50 feet of reinforcing iron, a piece of four by four and a half feet of welded hogwire and four cubic feet each of gravel and sand. These toilets are flyproof and will aid in keeping down many diseases, including typhoid fever. Another good work this survey is trying to accomplish is to get everyone to dig wells that are at least 125 feet deep with cement around the top of the casing, good drainage away from the well site so that no surface water can ever run down the side of the casing to the water strata, and so pollute the drinking water. Fifteen to fifty foot wells are dangerous to use and ought to be discontinued. Statistics are being taken at the same time this survey is conducted--on all the communicable and preventable diseases that we have had in 1932.

A check-up on those who have not had their births recorded is also being taken and every parent who has never had their children's births registered are urged to do so at once. For this district, Mr. Charles Duller has charge of these records.

Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell of Houston have been home for the holidays visiting Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Bump, Mrs. Maxwell's parents and enjoying the hunting.

Mrs. Paul Braden entertained with an afternoon bridge party on December 23, honoring her sister, Miss Helen Yeager, whose engagement she announced during the afternoon. After the playing started, sealed envelopes were found on each table, with instructions to open one after each four hands had been played by every table. In the envelopes were found cutup paper puzzles to be put together. The first table to assemble their puzzle were entitled to increase their score according to directions found on the completed puzzle. After the mad scramble to complete the puzzle first was made--and the wining table found the puzzle to be heart-shaped, with an announcement of the approaching marriage of Miss Helen Yeager to Mr. Hugh Thompson of El Campo typed on it. After the buzz of good wishes subsided delicious cakes, salad and tea were served. The honoree was presented with a guest gift of lovely mayonnaise bowl and ladle. The bridge prizes were won by Miss Grace Walker and Miss Mary Jean Cobb of Bay City. The following guests were present, Miss Helen Yeager, the Misses Laverne, Katherine and Mary Jean Cobb of Bay City, Mrs. Thompson of El Campo, Mrs. Schult of Rosenberg, Mrs. Burkhart of Matagorda, Mrs. R. Mr. and Mrs.. A. R. Matthes had as their Christmas dinner guests, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson and family of Collegeport, Mrs. Della Braden, Mr. Will Shuey, Mr. and Mrs. Albert White and son, Charles.

Mr. A. B. Pierce, Jr. returned to Houston on Tuesday after spending the week-end at home with his parents in Blessing.

The community Christmas tree held as usual in the Community House brought out a record crowd as the weather was so unusually fine for this time of year. A short program was given, a Christmas playlet by the grammar grade children, with Virginia Lucas, Billie Lindner, Russell Matthes, William King, Louise Mosley, Fay Shrum, Margaret Yurpres and Marion Wachter taking part in it and which included two favorite Christmas songs, "Jingle Bells," and "Silent Night." A few of the Girl Reserves sang "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear," "Joy to the World" and "O Little Town of Bethlehem." Miss Dorothy Duller played the accompaniments for these songs. After the program, Santa Claus arrived and passed out candy, apples and nuts, in attractive cellophane bags to over two hundred boys and girls. We are sorry to know that some did not receive these bags owing to the fact that the crowd was so much larger than ever before. It was estimated that between three hundred and fifty to four hundred people were in the house, as there was not even standing room left. A large crowd stayed in town to attend the midnight Christmas eve services at the Catholic Church.

Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Yeager have sent out invitations to the approaching marriage of their daughter, Miss Helen Nancy, to Mr. Hugh Sullivan Thompson of El Campo. The wedding will take place at the Presbyterian Church in Blessing on January sixth, 1933 at four o'clock in the afternoon.

Miss Katherine Cobb of Bay City, formerly of Blessing, has been elected to fill out the balance of the school year in the sixth and seventh grades of the Blessing school, finishing out the contract of Miss Helen Yeager.

Blessing

A get together day meeting for the purpose of dying old materials to fashion in to hooked rugs was held at the home of the president of the Blessing Home Demonstration Club, Miss Gertie Dobson, on last Tuesday, April 3.

Colors were mixed and experimented with until many beautiful combinations were worked out by members. Everyone brought a basket lunch along and spent a very happy and profitable day. Members present were Mrs. Albert White, Mrs. Ed Day, Mrs. A. E. Schulte, Mrs. C. A. Plant, Mrs. Wilbur Vaclavick, Mrs. C. E. Harter, Mrs. Roe Guynes, Mrs. J. A. Garnett, Mrs. Dobson and Miss Gertie Dobson.

On April 12 Thursday afternoon at 2 p. m. the Home Demonstration Club will meet at the Community House without the agent. County government will be the theme for the meeting. Mrs. Stalling and Mrs. Braden will have charge of the lessons and Mrs. Pierce will give a sketch of the history of Matagorda County.

On April 28 the agent will be present and at that time a demonstration will be given in judging for quality and flavor of canned products with a view toward learning what a good market demands.

Miss Sidney Zemanek is spending the holidays with her sister, Mrs. J. Pavelka in Dallas.

Miss Juanita Webb is spending the holidays at her home at Prairie Hill.

Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Meadows of Benneview and Mr. Grover Meadows of Chatfield spent Christmas day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. King.

Christmas guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Bump were Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell and daughter, Lorena of Houston, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Powell and Mr. Earl Bump.

Misses Evelyn Anderson and Dorothy Duller, who are attending college at Commerce, Texas, are here for the holidays.

Mr. R. E. Black is spending the holidays in Victoria with his parents.

Mrs. H. F. Nesbitt of Houston is a visitor at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. King.

Mrs. W. O. Selkirk, Mrs. H. B. Farwell, Mrs. Nellie Webb and Mrs. A. B. Pierce drove to Bay City on Christmas night to see the show.

Mr. and Mrs. Dick Williams and son Roy of LaWard were Blessing visitors Saturday.

Visitors to Bay City Saturday included Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Schulte and daughters, Olla Mae and Grace, Bert Logan, Mildred King, Mrs. A. L. Williams and daughters, Sister and Irene, Mr. W. Downer and Gertie Dobson.

The annual Christmas eve program was held at the church on December 24. Rev. Paul Engle of Bay City took charge of the worship program and songs. It was then turned over to Santa Claus, who distributed the gifts and a sack of candy and fruit to all of the children.

Mr. B. B. Rhodes spent Christmas in Blessing with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Rhodes.

Mrs. Albert White and Miss Grace Walker drove to Danevang on Sunday afternoon to visit Mrs. White's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Juhl.

The Blessing girls played Markham here on Wednesday, Dec. 19. The complete squad of girls was allowed to play at least a few minutes of the game. The result was a victory for Blessing at the score of 13-8.

Mr. Fred Kana is spending the holidays at his home in LaGrange.

Mr. S. W. Corse spent Christmas day with Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Duller.

Guests at the J. B. Jackson home on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Jackson and family of Port Lavaca and Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Gayle of LaWard.

Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Walker and family of Palacios are spending a few days here with Mrs. W. D. Walker and family.

Mr. Charles Newman spent Christmas in Ganado.

Rear Admiral Wertz, U. S. N. who is spending the winter at Rockport Gun Club was a week-end Christmas guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Pierce. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Farwell of Palacios were also guests of the Pierce's.

Mr. and Mrs. C. W. White had as guests on Christmas Hiram White and family of Bay City and John White and family of LaWard.

Miss Dorothy Duller and Miss Kathryn Barlow are spending a few days in Bay City with Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Coleman.

Mr. and Mrs. Pierce were at home to their friends Christmas afternoon and evening.

A film "The Life of Christ" was presented at the Community House Sunday night.

Mrs. Chambers of Birchwood, White Bear Lake, Minnesota, her daughter, Miss Sanders and granddaughter, Miss Mary Louise Sanders and A. B. Pierce Jr., drove down from Houston to spend the day, the Sunday before Christmas with the Pierce family. A. B. Pierce, Jr. remained over for the holidays and returned to Houston Christmas night.

Dr. Valeria Parker of New York City noted social hygiene lecturer, gave a series of lectures Thursday morning, afternoon and night.

Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Lucas and Virginia were guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Duller Christmas.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee H. Blake returned to their home in Lampasas Friday after visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Jackson.

Miss Esther Walker, Mrs. L. C. Cornelius, Mrs. M. D. Walker, Mrs. C. A. Lucas, Mrs. Della Braden, Mrs. Robert Thorp and Mrs. O. A. Yeager attended the Cold Kitchen Study in Bay City sponsored by Anderson-Rugeley at the Colonial Theater on Tuesday.

The high school play "Oh Susan," which was postponed from last Friday will be given this Friday night, May 10. Everyone come.

Russell, Margaret, Ruth and Freddie Matthes and Mr. F. E. Matthes and family spent Sunday in Ganado with Mrs. B. C. Matthes.

Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Thompson of El Campo spent the week-end in Blessing visiting Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Yeager and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Braden.

Auxiliary met on Wednesday at the home of Mrs. O. A. Yeager.

Mrs. Chas. E. Duller and Mrs. Della Braden attended the opening of the community house at Collegeport Saturday.

Work was started on the new Blessing high school building Wednesday.

The library held their regular monthly meeting Thursday at the community house. There were seven present. Mrs. Esther Beard and Mrs. John Lovelady were hostesses.

Mr. Joe Zemanek and daughter, Sidney, were business visitors in Palacios Saturday.

Mrs. W. King and daughter Mildred visited in Bay City Saturday morning.

The Blessing canning kitchen opened Friday morning.

Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Williams of Collegeport visited with Mr. and Mrs. W. Downer Sunday.

Mrs. Della Braden and Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Matthes attended the dance celebrating the opening of Mopac House in Collegeport Saturday night.

Mr. Paul Braden made a business trip to El Campo and Wharton Saturday.

Saturday night visitors to Bay City included Mrs. Frank Millard, Mrs. A. E. Schulte, Kathryn Barlowe, Olla Mae and Grace Schulte and Bert Logan.

New Bedroom For Ten Dollars, Says Blessing Club Girl

With a new dressing table, gold curtains, delicate wallpaper and freshly painted woodwork and floors, Sidney Zemanek, bedroom demonstrator for the Blessing Home Demonstration club (girls), announces that the whole dainty ensemble cost her but $10. Her light, lettuce green dressing table and book case were made out of a cumbersome old bookcase already at hand and already in bad repair before it was taken in hand and converted into two attractive pieces for the new little bedroom by Sidney's father.

Paint for the woodwork did not cost much, because Sidney took what was left when her mother finished painting the kitchen and added enough white to make it go around.

Pattern wallpaper predominating green carries out the green and gold color scheme selected by the small demonstrator.

"After I saw Key Cottake at A. and M. College, I told my mother we had to do the whole house over," Sidney concludes. "I brought home pages and pages of ideas in my notebook."

Mrs. O. J. Longuet and son, Ray, of Rosharon, spent Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Thomas.

Miss Bernice Williams is spending a few days visiting Miss Kathryn Barlow.

Mrs. J. F. Dabney, of Houston, has been visiting Mrs. J. H. Logan for the past week.

Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Walker of Bay City visited at the hotel on Sunday.

Mr. K. V. Harter spent Friday in Houston on business.

Miss Grace Walker returned on Saturday from C. I. A. where she has been attending the summer session.

A. O. Yeager returned Thursday form Houston. Mr. Yeager has been in the Turner Clinic for six weeks. Everyone is delighted with his fine appearance and so glad to see him at home again.

W. P. Braden was in Houston Thursday with a truck to haul merchandise for A. R. Matthes.

Miss Dorothy Duller, of Bay City, spent Wednesday night with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Duller.

Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Gayle and family of LaWard, spent Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Jackson.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Harris of LaWard were visitors here Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Braden and J. W. Shuey spent the week end at their camp on Caney Creek, near Sargent.

Mrs. Viva Metcalfe, who had her tonsils removed last week, is improving and will soon be in good health. Mrs. Metcalf is convalescing at the home of Mrs. Della Braden.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert White, Misses Pie Chiles, Jack Williams and Lucille Jackson, and Messrs. Brownie Rhodes, Lee Pierce and Paul Wheeler spent the week end at Sargent beach.

Among those attending the ball game in Houston on Friday night were Misses Esther Walker, Lucille Jackson, Pie Chiles, Jack Williams, and Messrs. Lee Pierce and Brownie Rhodes.

Mesdames A. R. Matthes, Della Braden, W. King and Miss Blake Terry attended the meeting of the Eastern Star Chapter in Palacios on Tuesday night.

Misses Canara and Avalin Watson returned on Monday, Aug. 17, from Georgia, where they have been visiting relatives for the past few months.

Miss Olla Mae Schulte spent Sunday in Clemville visiting Mrs. W. S. Terry.

Bay City visitors on Monday included Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Lindner, Miss Olla Mae Schulte, L. L. Rhodes, Mr. C. E. Duller and Miss Loy Fay Dobson.

Mr. Taylor Wooten arrived Saturday to spend a few days at the hotel.

Mr. and Mrs. Harbin, of Eagle Lake spent Sunday at the hotel.

Mr. and Mrs. C. W. White and granddaughter, Miss Nora White, of Bay City, left Monday for Indianapolis, Indiana. They will visit the Centennial and other points of interest enroute. Their visit will extend an indefinite length of time.

Dr. Cooke of Dallas visited at the Roe Guynes home on Saturday.

School Notice

Due to crowded conditions in the grammar school, all children must be six years of age on or before September 1st in order to be allowed to enter school in the Blessing school district this year. If any school children wish to go over their schedule for the ensuing year, see Mr. Hallmark at his home and he will go over it with them.

The school term will open on September 7.
