Mrs. M. P. Lindsay from Houston spent the week end with her husband and daughter here. Mrs. Lindsey is employed in Houston, but will move here to be with her family as soon as she can be replaced in her position. Mrs. J. A. Paul received word Saturday that her father, Mr. A. B. Hathcock of Darst Creek, had passed away at 2:00 p. m. He suffered a stroke two years ago and has been unable to leave his bed since. Mr. and Mrs. Paul left immediately for Luling. The mumps have really taken over in Vanderbilt. At present those how are down with them are: Mrs. Jess Cope, Mr. and Mrs. James Schuschardt. Mr. R. W. Wells and son, Mr. John Beall, John Raymond Van Zandt, Kenneth Martin and Carolyn Henderson. Mr. Garland Meeks is visiting his sister, Mrs. C. W. Martin. He is in the Army and has been stationed in Washington. He is visiting relatives prior to his leaving the States for Okinawa. Mr. Cecil Weeks left Thursday to go to Temple after his wife. She has been there attending her sister and her new son. Mr. and Mrs. Weeks returned home Saturday night. They reported that her father’s barn burned Friday night, also burning his car. He was drawing gasoline in the barn, and walked out about 15 feet to smoke a cigarette. The wind blew the air directly into the container of gasoline. He received a badly burned hand trying to put out the flames. Saturday, Mr. and Mrs. John Munn and son, Albert, and Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Phillips and Norma Jean went to Houston. They did some shopping and went to the show. Mr. and Mrs. James Watson and son, James, spent the week end with their daughter, Mrs. Al Phillips, in Corpus Christi. Last Thursday Evelyn Spradley was eleven years old. Her mother gave her a party at the Magnolia Chapel. A large group of children enjoyed many games. Two lovely cakes and cold drinks were served. Her grandmother from Sinton came to be with her on her birthday. The seniors leave on their Annual senior trip Wednesday. They will be accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. L. L. McCallister and Misses Pearl Renderkencht and Elizabeth Lawrence. Mr. McCallister will drive one of the school buses in which the trip is to be made. First they will go to Lake Charles, La., where they will spend the night, see the sights and go on to New Orleans the next day. They will stay there until Sunday when they will go to Baton Rouge and attend church, then back to Lake Charles to spend the night, and come home Monday. Mrs. W. T. Karr and her nephew, Douglas Hilyard from Goose Creek, came with L. C. Cantrell to visit the M. L. Cantrells and the Ace Fosters for the week end. Mr. and Mrs. Karr lived in Vanderbilt about six years? ago.

Easter Holiday Visitors Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Hardin spent the Easter holidays in ___. Miss Mary Bolding made a plane trip to Georgia where she attended her brother’s wedding. She also visited her parents, Dr. and Mrs. H. F. Bolding at Austin. Miss Maurie Creed visited her sister and brother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Portwood Alley in Beeville. Mr. Alley is the principal of the Beeville High School. Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Skloss spent Saturday in Ganado visiting Mrs. Brewer and spent Sunday in Port Lavaca. Miss Vlasta Marie Parencia visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Parencia, in Port Lavaca. Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Kindred and Marsha spent the holidays in Corpus Christi. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mallone made a trip through the Valley during the holidays. Mr. and Mrs. D. D. McCallister visited in Corpus Christi. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Hawkins and children visited in Galveston, Beaumont and Houston.

Mr. and Mrs. B. P. Darnell, Jr., from Fort Worth, spent the week end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Darnell, Sr. Miss Mary Jane Bolding had her mother, Mrs. H. F. Bolding, from Austin with her over the week end. Miss Norma Jean Phillips was honored with a surprise party on her 19th birthday Monday, April 5th at her home. She received many lovely gifts. Mr. L. R. Whitfield has his mother from Bloomington with him and family. A group from the Church of Christ went to Victoria Sunday to attend a singing. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Chisum. A son, Pat Howard, was born to them in the Blasingame Hospital in Wharton March 30th. A shower was given for Mrs. D. A. Lander at the home of Mrs. W. R. Walker, April 1. Mrs. Walker and Mrs. John Graham were co-hostesses. Mr. and Mrs. John Gorman from Jones, Oklahoma, spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Niccum. Mrs. E. E. Moss has the mumps. Others with the mumps are: Linda Faye and David Todd, Beverly Jean Wilson, Martis Haynes, Frieda Meyers, and little Joan Chisum. Baby Susan Todd has the chicken pox. Monday the Church of Christ gave their visiting preacher, Bro. Paul Stevens, and singer, Bro. Ernest Sumerlin, a fish fry at the Shell Bank in the Simons pasture. Rev. Raymond Drews, who used to be pastor of the Vanderbilt Baptist church, came by Vanderbilt Monday. He lives in Donna now. After spending the night with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Jones and visiting with old friends, he went on to Houston to attend the State Sunday School Convention. Rev. J. C. Tierce also went to this convention Thursday.

Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Gardemal of Houston visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sembera Sunday. Mr. M. A. Isdale left Monday for Kingsville. He will enter a hospital there where he will undergo a major surgical operation Wednesday morning. Mrs. J. M. Watson, who is in the Nightingale Hospital in El Campo recuperating from a major operation, is doing nicely. Congratulations are in order for Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Louder. They are the parents of a new son, born Sunday at the DeTar Memorial Hospital, Victoria. Both mother and son are fine. Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Green, Sr., Eugene Green, Jr., Billy Green and Miss Norma Wagstaff attended the decoration day services at the cemetery at Hebron. Mr. H. E. Chism now has the mumps. We are glad to see Mrs. John Folmar up. She has been ill for the past two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Van Zandt and John Raymond went to Austin with Miss Mary Jane Bolding Friday to spend the week end with Dr. and Mrs. Bolding. Little Miss Kathy Crum and her mother, Mrs. Charles C. Crum, from Houston will spend the week with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Rankin. Mrs. Crum is Mr. Rankin’s sister. Mr. T. D. Scadden went to Palacios Sunday. He preached at the Church of Christ at the morning and evening services. Mr. M. N. Schoonover, who has been in Porfirio for the past few weeks looking after a lumber yard, was at home with his family for the week end. On Thursday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Weeks and Mr. and Mrs. W. E. McGlohen drove to Houston where they visited Mrs. McGlohen’s relatives, her mother, Mrs. Nora Talley, her brother and family, Mr. W. L. Henderson; also her sister, Mrs. Wm. M. Glick. While there they did some shopping, and met other Vanderbilt people shopping, also. They had to hurry home Saturday, though as Mr. Weeks had to go to work at four o’clock. They report a grand time.

Men’s Service Organization Monday evening Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Simons honored the Men’s Service Organization and their families with a barbecue at the Magnolia Chapel. The barbecued beef and chicken were delicious, served with brown beans, cold drinks for the children, coffee for the adults, beautiful salads, and delicious cakes and pies. After the feast the crowd was called to order by the president, Mr. E. L. Coleman. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Mr. B. H. Rupard, the secretary. Mr. J. S. Tierce, the chairman of the committee on telephones, reported that we can expect to get telephones in the near future. Mr. E. E. Campbell and Mrs. G. C. Worthy, members of the road committee, reported on the work they had done. Mr. J. R. Van Zandt, scoutmaster, reported the progress the Boy Scouts had made. Next Mr. Tierce presented Mr. Charles White, district supervisor of the Boy Scouts, who presented an award to the Men’s Service Organization. This award was given by the Boy Scout Headquarters in New York to this organization as sponsor of the Boy Scouts in this community. Mr. White then made a talk about “About Our Youth and What Are We To Do With Them.’ Mrs. White accompanied him from Victoria. ~~~~~~~~~~ Mrs. Roy McCammon from Sinton came in Friday to visit her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Spradley and Evelyn. White here she was able to attend the piano recital and hear her granddaughter play. Mr. W. A. Reves’ piano students gave a recital Friday evening. The girls were beautifully dressed in pastel evening dresses, while the boys were handsome in their dark suits. Those who participated were Misses Ann Haynes, Jo Ann Stephens, Evelyn Spradley, Zelda Mae Sharp, and Masters James Watson, Scott Gray, Jr., and Johnny Schaefer. They were a credit to Mr. Reves. Afterwards Mr. H. C. Stephens took all the students to the Oilers Café for a treat. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Kindred and family spent an enjoyable week end at Galveston. Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Whitfield and family spent Mother’s Day with his mother in Bloomington. Visitors in the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Hawkins were Mrs. R. L. Hunter, Sr., and Mrs. and Mrs. R. L. Hunter, Jr., and son, and Mr. and Mrs. Billie Hunter, all from Pearland, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Tabor and family went to see their daughter, Mrs. L. E. Sanford, in Eagle Lake on Mother’s Day. Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Sharp and children and Mrs. H. C. Stephens and Jo Ann attended a celebration at the home of Mrs. C. S. Herrington in Victoria Sunday. Mrs. Herrington was happy to welcome her children and a host of grandchildren, and great grandchildren on Mother’s Day. Mrs. D. N. Denn and Miss Nancy Denn went to Conroe Friday. Mrs. Denn was called to the bedside of her father. We are glad to report that he is somewhat better today (Monday). Mr. and Mrs. O. R. Malone were very happy last week end. All of their children were home for Mother’s Day: Oliver Malone, who is in the Navy, stationed at San Diego, California; Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Schramm, Jr., and children from San Antonio, and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Koop and children, and Jack. Miss Mary Alice Rogers, from Dallas is here this week visiting her sister, Mrs. T. G. Jones and her family and other friends. Mr. Ted Scadden left Monday for Dallas, where he is to buy a new “black” 5 passenger club coupe Chevrolet. It is rumored that the reason he has been so long getting a new car is because he wouldn’t have anything but a black one. We are grieved to report the passing on May 3rd at Lockhart of Mr. H. L. Lowery. He was the brother of Mrs. T. J. Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Hill went to Lockhart on May 3rd and returned May 6th. Mr. and Mrs. Hafernick spent the week end in El Campo with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Meek and Mr. and Mrs. G. J. Hafernick. Mrs. Walter Warren returned Monday from McKinney where she had gone to see Mrs. Dorothy Cook after the tornado had hit there. She found Dorothy in the hospital when she arrived on the 4th of May. She said that a part of the hospital had blown away and that there just was not enough help to take care of the patients. She stayed a week and took care of Mrs. Cook. When she left Mrs. Cook had been taken home and was much better. All remember Dorothy as she attended high school here and was one of the baton twirlers with the band. Mrs. Collette Williams from Topeka, Kansas, is here visiting her sister, Mrs. E. P. Dutton Sunday. Mrs. Williams’ daughter, Mrs. Almuth C. Green, gave a dinner at her home in Victoria. Those from here who were present were Mrs. Dutton, Miss Margaret Dutton, Mrs. T. M. Green, mother of Almuth Green and Otto Green. Otto was here for the week end from McAllen. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pearce from Francitas, and Eugene Green, Jr., from Ganado visited Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Green Sr. Sunday.

Well, the election is over, so I for one, feel like the weather can get cooler. Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Wilson and children are vacationing in West Texas. The C. W. Martin family returned Thursday from a vacation in Arkansas and Tennessee. Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Hill and children were here this past week winding up their affairs preparatory to moving. They expect to live somewhere in the vicinity of Waco. Other vacationists are Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Weeks. They took his sister, Miss Linda Weeks, back to house in Fort Worth. They will visit relatives there and at Temple. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Fowler and family returned from De Leon, Texas where they spent their vacation with relatives. A group of ladies from the Presbyterian Church gave a tea shower complementing Mrs. Jack Schafer at the Magnolia Chapel Friday afternoon from 2 till 4. Monday Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Van Zandt and John Raymond moved to Lolita where they will be employed in the Lolita school this next term. Eagle Lake is where the C. A. Bryants will spend their vacation which began Sunday. Vanderbilt seems to be the scene of bad wrecks lately. Friday night Martin Garcia and another boy turned over in a big ditch when he hit some loose sand as he tried to pass another car. His car was completely demolished, although neither of the occupants were seriously injured. Saturday evening two cars collided in about the same place, a mile north of Vanderbilt. It behooves you and me to be more careful. W. E. McGlohen is on his vacation now. He is going to spend the first week fishing. Then they will go to Louisiana to visit friends. Helping him fish are Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Henderson and daughter, Joyce, Mrs. McGlohen’s sister, and her mother, Mrs. Nora Talley. Recently returned vacationists are Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Myers, who visited his parents in Chandler, Okla. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Williams left Tuesday on their vacation. We are all so glad that Mr. C. C. Coleman was able to return to his home. He suffered a stroke some time past and has been in Houston. After a stay in the hospital, he stayed in his daughter’s home in Houston. He brought back a nurse to look after him and is getting along splendidly.

Miss Viola Schelle of Sweeny is visiting Miss Norma Jean Phillips. Vanderbilt is proud of its new dry goods store, owned and operated by Mrs. W. E. McGlohen. She has a nice line and I am sure we all will be benefitted by this new store. The Church of Christ has a new minister, Royce L. Bressie from Hondo moved to Vanderbilt to begin his work Wednesday. Mrs. and Mrs. Argo from Telferner visited his mother, Mrs. Agnes Argo who is seriously ill, and his sister, Mrs. Mattie Crisp, Sunday. August 12, 1948, a bridal shower for Miss Ella Mae Phillips was given in the recreation hall at the Baptist Church. Mrs. R. B. Morris from East Texas is visiting her daughter, Mrs. J. A. Folmar. Also visiting here is Mrs. Heathcock, mother of Mrs. J. A. Paul, who is from Darst Creek, Texas. A shower, honoring Mrs. C. A. Bryant, was given Friday evening by the ladies of the Church of Christ. Mrs. J. W. Munn and son, Albert, made a business trip to Houston Monday. Mrs. Howard Holland and Mrs. Lillie Hood were hostesses at a shower given for Mrs. J. T. Williams Thursday afternoon at Mrs. Holland’s home. Mr. M. P. Lindsey is back from a month’s vacation. Miss Iva Nell Barker, who is well known here, accompanied him. Miss Baker is his adopted daughter. They visited Hot Springs, Ark. From there they saw the Cardinals play in St. Louis; Pikes Peak and Temple Square at Salt Lake City, were the other points of interest on their trip. Iva Nell had fun swimming in the Great Salt Lake, where you know you can’t sink. Next they saw all the sights in San Francisco. They especially enjoyed the Redwoods in the National Park. Mrs. Elsbeth Andiach of Comanche, Oklahoma has been visiting her life long friend, Mrs. Jesse P. Caldwell. Mrs. Caldwell accompanied her as far as Houston on her way home. While there she visited her daughter and family, Mrs. C. J. Clom. Miss Ladell Fowler, who is employed with an Airlines Co. in San Antonio, visited with her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Fowler. Her sister, Miss Eullah Fowler, accompanied her back to San Antonio. August 13, a coffee was given in honor of Mrs. A. E. Watson with a shower at the Magnolia Chapel from 8:30 ‘til 11:00 A. M. The hostesses were Mrs. Wm. Whitworth, Jr., Mrs. Jess Cope, Mrs. Fay Todd, Mrs. A. C. Upton, Mrs. Ed Kiser and Mrs. Dora Scheummer. Mrs. Dora Scheummer was operated on for appendicitis August 13, at the DeTar Hospital in Victoria. Mrs. G. A. Spradley and Evelyn have just returned from their vacation in New Braunfels and Buchannan Dam. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Kindred and family left Saturday for Dallas. He is getting a promotion and will work in the others there.

A bridal shower was given for Mary Catherine Willis at the Baptist Church August 28th from 9:00 a. m. to 11:00 a. m. The hostesses were Mrs. John Choate, Mrs. Pearl Phillips, Mrs. Ruth Elkins, and Miss Jewel Scadden. Visitors in the home of Mrs. C. J. Sharp are her mother, Mrs. C. S. Herrington and her niece, Miss Virginia Lee Paul, both of Victoria. Little Miss Betty Fair Gerwick from Bayside, Texas, is visiting little Miss Barbara Walker. Mr. J. N. Munn and Mr. Albert Munn went to Houston on business. Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Smith from Weslaco and Miss Frances Cain from Victoria, Texas, visited Mr. and Mrs. Harry Redeker from Wednesday until Saturday. Mrs. Smith is Mr. Redeker’s sister and Miss Cain is his niece. Miss Dora McDonald left Thursday for Luling where she will again attend high school. Wednesday at the Nightingale Hospital at El Campo, a 5 pound 11 ounce son was born to Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Williams. This young man is J. T. Williams, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Kindred and family were back over the week end getting ready to move to Dallas. Mr. and Mrs. M. Watson and James have returned from their vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Walker, Barbra and Betty Fair Gerwick spent three days at Garner Park near Uvalde last week. Mrs. J. A. Folmar entered John Sealy Hospital in Galveston Sunday. It is hoped that her condition will be much improved soon. Mrs. R. B. Morris and Miss Lissa Folmar visited relatives in Houston over the week end. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wagstaff and Norma visited Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Scadden Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Reeves came in Monday to get ready for the new school year. The past three weeks Mrs. C. E. Webster has had her sister, Mrs. Montgomery and daughter from Louisville, Ky., visiting in her home. They left for Louisville Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Miller went to Fort Worth, Texas Sunday to see Mrs. Miller’s daughter, Mrs. Frances Kretzeberg, who is in the hospital there. Mrs. Miller remained in Fort Worth to be with her daughter.

Mrs. George Faulks and Georgia Dell accompanied by Mrs. Faulk’s niece, Miss Jeanette Smith, from Woodsboro spent the Easter holidays with Mrs. Faulk’s mother, Mrs. Mamie Smith, and sister, Mrs. Walter Corgey both of Seguin. In Driscoll is where Mr. and Mrs. D. D. McCallister spent the week end visiting Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Gentry and family. Mrs. Bernard Chada went to the hospital in Kingsville Tuesday evening. Another person who is ill is Mrs. George Whitworth. She was operated on Wednesday morning in El Campo. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Henderson and Dorothy from Louise visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Green Sunday. …a district singing. Visitors from Victoria and Edna came besides a large crowd from Vanderbilt. Edna contributed several beautiful special numbers. The Church of Christ is in the midst of a meeting with Bro. Paul Stevens of San Antonio doing the preaching, and Bro. Ernest Summerlin, also of San Antonio, directing the singing. They reported a record attendance. The seniors came in Monday evening from their Senior Trip to Louisiana. All had a wonderful trip. Miss Mary Jane Bolding left last Wednesday to join her parents in Austin. From there they flew to Georgia to attend her brother’s wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Redeker left last Saturday morning for Houston to spend the Easter holidays with their son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Redeker. Holiday visitors in Luling were Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Elkins and children. Oh, my, we now have chicken pox, Little John Bridges Beall and Rita Jones are the first victims. Mrs. C. S. Herrington of Victoria is visiting her daughters, Mrs. H. C. Stephens and Mrs. C. J. Sharp. Mr. Fred Walker made a business trip to Matthis and Corpus Christi last Wednesday and Thursday. Miss Ladell Fowler, who is attending business school in San Antonio has been here visiting homefolks and friends. Also Charles Stephens, who is attending Abilene Christian College, was home for the Easter holidays. Mrs. Roland McDonald left Monday to take Miss Dora McDonald to Luling where she attends school. She had been visiting here during the Easter vacation. Last Friday evening Mr. and Mrs. Ted Scadden, Mrs. W. E. McGlohen, Miss Jewel Faye Scadden, Mr. H. C. Stephens and Chas. Stephens attended the closing of the singing school at the Church of Christ at Edna. It would be appreciated if anyone having a news item would turn it in to Mrs. Ozella Sharp.
