Dr. C. M. Dugger opened his offices for the practice of optometry, Monday, March 7th. Temporary location of the offices is above the Faires Drug Store. He will move to the new LaBauve building when it is completed. This is the first time Edna has been offered the services of a full time, resident optometrist, an advantage few towns its size have. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Dugger, Dr. Dugger was born and reared in Edna. He was co-captain of the Edna High School football and basketball teams and also served his class as president. He graduated in 1936. Mrs. Dugger is the former Charlotte LaBauve, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. LaBauve. She is a native of Edna and lived here until her marriage to Dr. Dugger in 1939 when she returned with him to Chicago where he was studying at the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. Preparatory to entering this college, he spent one year each at Schreiner Institute, Kerrville, and A. and I at Kingsville. After his graduation from the College of Optometry, he established his practice in Hillsboro. The following year, he volunteered for service in the United States Army. He served in the Medical Corps three and a half years. Stationed in the South-Pacific area for 32 months, he devoted his entire time to optometric practice. After his discharge from the army, he moved to Huntsville where he resided three and a half years.

Grief stricken relatives and friends who overflowed the First Methodist Church attended the funeral services of C. M. Dugger, 74, prominent Edna citizen, Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock. He died Monday at 9:30 a. m. at his home at 309 South Pumphrey St., following a six week illness. Rev. I. E. Walker officiated and burial was in Edna Cemetery. Pallbearers were Norton Wells, Steele Simons, Callaway Vance, Gifford Hodges, Eldred Bergstrom and Sam Craig. Slavik Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. A large outpouring of floral offerings, the closing of many business houses during the hours of the funeral and contributions in his name to his favorite Methodist Church organizations and activities attested to the popularity of Mr. Dugger. His demise has been the cause of much sorrow among the residents of the city and county. Mr. Dugger was born March 30, 1882, in Caldwell County near Lockhart, a son of C. J. Dugger and Ivvie Lowder Dugger, deceased. He followed farming until he became 31 years of age and then moved with his family to Jackson County, settling at Edna. He farmed here in early days, at one time operated a gin, was a garage employee for several years and in recent years had been in the real estate business. He still retained his farming interests at the time of his death. His real estate offices were in the Guaranty Abstract Co. building at 116 West Main St. He also served as county treasurer during World War II. An ardent church and community worker, Mr. Dugger served in practically every official capacity at the First Methodist Church. He was Sunday School superintendent, chairman of the Board of Stewards, past president of the Methodist Men’s Club and a past president of the Board of Trustees of the church. He also served for years on the school board and for several years was president of the board. He was a director and a faithful worker in the chamber of commerce, a member of the Rotary Club. He also was a tireless worker for the Jackson County Fair and Texana Days celebration, for several years soliciting, almost by himself, all the advertisements for the fair catalogue in the Edna area. He was a Mason and member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Two of his pet projects were the Edna Coffee Club, a group of business and professional men who meet daily at a local café at 9:10 a.m. for fellowship, the Moss Ranch Hunting Club near Llano. He was president of the coffee club and was top man of the hunting party of some 12 or 14 Jackson County men who hunted on the Moss Ranch lease for over 20 years. He and his wife, Mrs. Mittie Dugger, an astute business woman, slowly built up a string of rent houses and apartments in the vicinity of their home in the western edge of Edna that has become known as “Duggerville.” The Dugger home in the hub of this property became a friendly haven for all the neighbors. It was through his real estate business that Mr. Dugger became so well known outside Edna. Persons coming in for apartments and homes always found him friendly and courteous. Regardless of whether or not he had a certain place lister, he always would take the time to drive a prospective newcomer to Edna around the town to show them rental units. And it was not uncommon for Mr. Dugger to stop a total stranger and invite him to have a friendly cup of coffee at the coffee club sessions. In this way he made many staunch friends for the City of Edna and frequently was referred to as the city’s good will ambassador. Mr. Dugger is survived by his wife; a son, Dr. C. M. Dugger of Edna; two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Gibson of Austin and Mrs. Gordon Nelson of Edna; a sister, Mrs. H. E. Middleton of Edna, and 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
