Dr. Robert E. Lee LaBauve     Laura Mae Traylor LaBauve
Tragedy at Edna

Dr. Lee Labauve, a prominent physician of Edna, about 55 years old, shot and killed his wife and himself at their home in that city late Saturday afternoon shortly after they had returned from a fishing trip, according to information received here.

Neighbors hearing the shots entered the house without seeing anyone depart and found Mrs. LaBauve dead under the bed and her husband lying dead across the bed with a gun by his side. The top of Dr. LaBauve’s head was shot off and his wife was shot in the face. It is thought that she fled under the bed when her husband attacked her.

Dr. LaBauve was a man of the highest standing and his supposed terrible deed evidently was due to a sudden fit of insanity. He was well known in Victoria, having gone to school here. His brother, Garrett LaBauve, who resided in this city for a time, being a drug clerk here, committed suicide a number of years ago. Another brother, Victoria LaBauve, who is drilling a water well in this county left at once for Edna when notified of the tragedy, as did also Dr. LaBauve’s cousin, Will LaBauve, a well known cattle buyer, who was here at the time.

Mrs. LaBauve was a daughter of the late Josiah Traylor, who owned one of the largest ranches in Jackson County, and Mrs. Charlotte Traylor. She was a frequent visitor to Victoria, being here last Monday, and her tragic death has caused universal sorrow. She was the sister of Mrs. L. D. Hensley of Edna, also well known here. Dr. and Mrs. LaBauve are survived by two sons.

The LaBauve Funeral

A double funeral was held at Edna Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock for Dr. and Mrs. R. E. L. LaBauve, whose tragic deaths occurred at their home there late Saturday afternoon. There were two hearses and two sets of pall bearers and burial was made in one grave, J. W. Brickel, of Edna, and W. J. McMahon, of this city, directed the funeral, and a minister from Austin, Dr. Sterling Fisher, conducted the obsequies. Mr. McMahon says he never saw a funeral so largely attended.

Dr. LaBauve was 56 and Mrs. LaBauve 50 years old. Both were born in Jackson County. Mrs. LaBauve was the daughter of Mrs. Charlotte Traylor. Her father, the late Josiah Traylor, owned one of the largest ranches in Jackson County. Dr. LaBauve owned considerable farm and ranch property and enjoyed a large medical practice.

The couple is survived by two sons, Bernard and Clyde LaBauve of Houston. Dr. and Mrs. LaBauve were shot and killed, their bodies being discovered about 5 o’clock by Bernard LaBauve, who was home on a visit.
