Edna—James Harris, 80, of Edna, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999. He was born July 10, 1919, in Edna, to the late Luther and Pearl Lee Dukes Harris. He was a retired farmer, a rancher, a deacon at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Board Chairman, treasurer and trustee, Sunday School Assistant Superintendent, usher and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Survivors: wife, Mary Childs Harris; sister, Mattie B. Brooks of Buffalo, N. Y. Preceded in death by: parents. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p. m. today at Cook-Butler Funeral Home in Edna. Lois Hashaway Lois Hashaway EDNA--Services for Mrs. Lois Hashaway, 70, who died Thursday in a Waco hospital, will be held Saturday at 2 p. m. at the Shiloh Baptist Church of Edna, with the Rev. W. C. Yancy officiating. Burial will be in Hines Cemetery near Edna, with Littles and Son Funeral Home of Waco in charge of arrangements. The body will lie in state at the church from 11 a. m. Saturday until time of the service. Mrs. Hashaway was born March 17, 1914, in Jackson County to the late Mr. and Mrs. Ben Harris. Surviving are a son, Louis Charles Harris Sr. of Waco; two sisters, Mrs. Lelia Brigham and Mrs. Altha Marie Griffin, both of Edna; and four grandchildren.

She was born Aug. 4, 1944, in Ganado, to Lovell Hines Callis of Edna and the late Alonzo Brown Sr. She was owner of Unique Services of Houston and was a member of Faith Temple Church of God in Christ. Survivors: daughters, Kecia Stewart of Edna and Alicia Hines of Houston; son, Donald Williams Jr., of Edna; mother; stepfather, Lealon Callis of Edna; sisters, Belinda Adams of San Antonio, Sheila Brown, Carolyn Brown, Jackie Brown, Norma Brown and Vicki Brown, all of Dallas; foster sister, Evangelist Mary Smith of Sacramento, Calif.; brother, Alonzo Brown Jr., of Dallas; and nine grandchildren. Chester Hines Chester Hines EDNA--Chester Hines, 76, of Edna died Wednesday in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. Saturday at the Scruggs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mr. Hines was born April 1, 1906, in Jackson County and was a retired truck driver. He was a veteran of World War II. Rev. Claude Hines Rev. Claude Hines EDNA—The Rev. Claude Hines, 61, of LaSalle, died Tuesday afternoon at a Victoria hospital following a long illness. He was born in Jackson County on Feb. 28, 1923, the son of Tom and Gertrude Hines, He served as minister of the True Light Missionary Baptist Church No. 4 in Edna. He also was an employee at Bennett Ranch in LaSalle. Funeral services will be at 1 p. m. Saturday at the True Light Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Sam Fisher will officiate. Burial will be in Hines Cemetery under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home in Edna. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances Hines of LaSalle; a foster mother, Mrs. Florence Brown of El Maton; two daughters, Mrs. Deborah Rainey and Mrs. Barbara Hines of Edna; a son, Mack Earl Hines of Edna; two brothers, Sinclair and Clyde Hines of Edna; three sisters, Mrs. Ellie Stovall and Mrs. Lovell Callas of Edna and Mrs. Josephine Brigham of Houston; and five grandchildren. Hugh Hines, 95, passed away Feb. 25, 2021. He was born Sep. 29, 1925 in Morales, TX to the late Eugene and Velma Tones Hines. Hugh was a US Army Veteran and retired with 30 years service with the Texas Highway Department. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 1991, at his residence after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Monday at Mount Olive Baptist Church, with the Rev. Pat H. Griffin, pastor of Mount Olive Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hines Cemetery, under the direction of Jackson County Funeral Service, Inc. He was born March 21, 1915, in Edna, to the late Tom and Gertrude Arnold Hines. He was plant operator of mechanical and electrical equipment for the Houston Independent School District for ten years. While in Houston he was a member and deacon of the Willing Workers Baptist Church. Mr. Hines retired and moved to Edna where he was a member and deacon of the Mount Olive Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Matilda Hines of Edna; a foster daughter, Mrs. Tessie E. Davis of Kirchgoens, Germany; three sisters, Mrs. Ellis Stovall and Mrs. Lovell Callis, both of Edna, and Mrs. Josephine Brigham of Houston; and four foster grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. Pallbearers will be Frank Jones, Mack E. Hines, Kenneth and Robert J. Brooks, Deacon James Harris, and Freddy L. Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Mount Olive Baptist Church.

EDNA--Funeral services for Maxie Hines, 67, who was killed in an accident on Highway 111 Wednesday near Morales will be held at 1 p. m. Saturday from the Scruggs Chapel Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Carter officiating. Burial will be in the Hines Cemetery under direction of Cook Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Booker T. Washington, Tom Holland, Clifford Caesar, Frederick Patterson, Jesse Robinson and Dexer Arkadie. Mr. Hines was a retired farmer and lived near Morales for many years. He was killed instantly Wednesday when a truck ran into the rear of the pickup he was driving on Highway 111. His wife Rena and her aunt, injured in the accident, are in satisfactory condition in the Edna hospital. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Rosetta Tyler of San Antonio; two sisters, Mrs. Katie Simon of Houston and Mrs. Guidie Rupe of Beeville; a brother, Dale Hines of Bay City, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will begin at 3 p. m. Saturday at the Shiloh Baptist Church. The Rev. G. L. Roberts will officiate. Burial will be in Hines Cemetery in Edna. Cook-Butler Funeral Home of Edna will be in charge of arrangements. She was survived by two daughters, Emma Lee Kelly of San Antonio and Charles Barnes of Edna; a brother, Clarence Diggs of Edna; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. EDNA--Funeral services for James "Slick" Hopes, 58, of Edna, who died Friday, June 7, 1991, in an Edna hospital, will be 1 p. m. Tuesday at Scruggs United Methodist Church, the Rev. Howard Mims officiating. Burial: Hines Cemetery under directions of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home, 782-3821, Edna. Born June 20, 1932, in Edna to the late Richard Callis and Frances Hopes, he was self-employed as a truck driver and a member of the Methodist church. Survivors: Wife, Carol J. Hopes; step-daughters, Barbara Steen, Patricia Hopes, Deloris Robinson and Clara Franklin of Edna; sons, Robert Callis of Katy and John Long of Louise; step-son, Alvin Dilworth of Rosharon; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers: Felton Hopes, Kenneth and Douglas Tones, Bobby Miller, Darrell Franklin, John Anderson, Curtis Barnes and Derrick Boston. Honorary pallbearers: Tony and Jesse Norman, Fred Caesar, Toney Callis, W. G. Jones and Andrew Rucker.

EDNA--Funeral services for Mrs. Susan Hopes, 92, of Edna will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday at the Scruggs United Methodist church, with the Rev. Ernest Harrison officiating. Burial will be in the Hines Cemetery under the direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home. Mrs. Hopes was born Nov. 11, 1884 in Jackson County. She died Monday at her home here. Surviving are three daughters, Gracie and Francis Hopes of Edna and Mae Dean Norman of Edna; a son, Nolan Sayles of Los Angeles, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren, 51 great-great grandchildren and three great-great-great grandchildren.

CORPUS CHRISTI--Ange Lee Hunter, 72, of Corpus Christi, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board. Survivors: sons, Arthur Lee Hines and Fester Von Hines, both of Corpus Christi, Don Marvin Hines of Lake Charles, La., and Anthony Hines and Dwight Erwin Hines, both of Arlington; sister, Carrie Brigham of El Campo; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p. m. today at Corpus Christi Funeral Home chapel. Services will be 2 p. m. Saturday at St. John Baptist Church, the Rev. Derrick Reaves officiating.
