Sherman, Texas Sherman Democrat
July 4, 1976 St. Mary's School was first established as St. Joseph's Academy in January 1877, located in the 700 block of South Travis. It is one of the many early private and denominations schools established in Sherman. Although St. Mary's was once both an elementary and high school, today the 115 students attend kindergarten through fifth grade. The idea of the school began in November of 1876 when the sisters of St. Mary purchased from B. Fairchild a small house on south Travis, a few houses north of St. Mary's Catholic Church. In 1920, with the reorganization of the school system of the Sisters of St. Mary, the high school department was accredited by the State Department of Education. This affiliation is still in force today for the elementary school. Both Catholics and students from other religious denominations in Sherman, Denison and Howe attend the school.
