In January 1877, ten Sisters arrive from Coriscana, where a school had been established.  Upon the completion of the Convent, three more Sisters were added. In September 1877, St. Joseph's Academy opened.  The first register was Maggie McCormack Althoff.

Other students who excelled in music and art were:
  • Miss Eve Rapinsky had a successful career in Grand Opera.
  • Miss Annie Weinstein, of Sherman, distinguished herself as a pianist.
  • Miss Gertrude Dorchester became a member of the order and became an outstanding art teacher.
  • Miss Theresa McConville became St. Mary St. Patrick, Ph.D and and a writer
  • Miss Mattie Fitch was the first Sherman girl to join the Sisters of St. Mary and as Sister Emily joined the teaching staff.
The student enrollment continued to increase and in 1881 a new brick building was constructed. St. Joseph's was incorporated by the State Legislature.

The curriculum included music and art of the old world as well as its charm and manners.  On Monday morning, after prayer, the 'lesson on Civilities" was held.

The highlight of the year was the Commencement Exercises called "Exhibitions".  The Sisters worked with great artistry to produce Biblical plays and fairy story cantatas.  Such great numbers of the Sherman community were in attendance that they had to move to the Opera House, where they continued for many years.
