Denison, Grayson
County, Texas, son of Edward William
Burget (1868-1948) born in
White Rock community in Hunt Co., Texas; and and
Cora Ann Frost (1874
-1953), born in Arkansas. Edward had
received his elementary
education in Hunt County, completing 5 years of
school. Cora
received her elementary education in Arkansas,
completing the 6th
grade. Edward, at the age of 27, married Cora
Frost, aged 21, on
Christmas Day, 1895. Shortly after, the
young couple moved
to Ward 3, Grayson Co., Texas, living at 525 W.
Chestnut Street, where their 3
children were born.
His siblings were: A. Dean Burget, 1898-1999; married David Clement Jones on June 11, 1943, Grayson Co., Texas. She married after her 1st husband's death to Jack Warren Elrod in 1950 in Grayson Co., Texas Clyde Burget, 1896-1901 The family rented a house on West Munston St. in Denison in 1910; Edward's occupation was in Delivery Clerk House By 1920 the family of 4 was living in Ward 6, Denison on Munson Street in a home they had purchased. Edward WIlliam Burget was a Yard Engineer for the Katy Railroad by 1920. Dean, 21-year-old daughter, had graduated with 4 years of high school education and was a bookkeeper for Swift Co. Ben registered for the World War I drafte at the age of 18 on June 5, 1900. His occupation was cleaning & pressing for "Union Woolen Mills" at 209 W. Main St. Ben worked at the age of 19 as a clerk in the Katy office. Ben married Jimmy Henrietta "Rita" Kelt in 1923. Rita had moved from Navarro County to Ward 4, Denison, Grayson county and worked as a stenographer in a Dry Goods Store, renting a room on Main Street from Anna Rencher. After their marriage Ben and Rita purchased a home in Ward 6 at 109 W. Monterey along with their son, Kenneth Kelt, and daughter, Benadean. Kenneth Kelt Burget & Betsy Bulloch wed 1949, Collin Co., Texas Benjamin Reuben Burget is credited in his obituary (Ft. Worth Star-Telegraph, March 10, 1959, pg.14) with organizing Troop 1 Denison Boy Scouts. Ben R. Burget, 36, was chosen as Scout Master. Six years later he turned to professional Scout work as a field man for the old Grayson County Council and later became Executive of the Texas-Oklahoma Council. The 1929 Denison City Directory listed Ben and Rita living at 127 W. Monterey and his occupation was that of a Field Executive for the Boy Scouts of America. By 1940 Ben owned his own business in Denison. Ben's parents sister daughter, Dean, still lived in their home in Ward 6 at 223 Munson Street 1930-1940. Edward was employed as a Locomotive Engineer for the railroad; by 1940 he had moved to the position of Locomotive Fireman with the steam railway. Dean was a bookkeeper for a retail drug store. Ben lost a close mayoral race to Harry Glidden in 1949. Cora had died of stomach cancer at Madonna Hospital, Denison, Texas. Ben died in spring 1959 while living in Marshall, Harrison County, Texas where he managed a grocery store.
