Church was organized in the home of James Moore Coffman in 1872.
The twelve charter members were David H. Coffman Sr. and his
wife, Harriet; James Moore Coffman and his wife, Tempie; Robert Coffman
and his wife, Maggie; Thomas Coffman and his wife, Sarah; Mrs. Joe
Layne, Mrs. Zeke Williams, Grandma Williams, J. K. P. Williams.
Rev. J. K. P. Williams served as the first pastor for 10
years.
Services were held in homes until David H. Coffman Sr. and Joseph Layne donated land for a school, cemetery and church in 1879. A one-room log cabin houses the first Layne School and Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. The Layne Elementary School sits on the same site. The second building was a larger, one-room white frame structure, again used as a school and church. It burned in 1922. A new church building was erected at 2400 block of West Walker. The new building housed a small auditorium, classrooms with a small structure in the back contained two more classrooms. The church membership was 212. The fourth church building was at 2401 W. Morton; the property being purchased in 1946. This building had a large auditorium, raised rostrum for a 30-member choir, eleven classrooms, nursery, kitchen and study. This building was destroyed by fire in 1951. A new building was rebuilt in the same year. Eight lots adjacent to the church property were purchased in December 1965.
