The
first written record of Layne School occurs in a newspaper dated April
29, 1879. The article stated that Mount Pleasant Academy had opened for
classes two and one-half miles west of Denison.
David H. Coffman Sr. and Joseph Layne donated land for a school, cemetery and church in 1879. The Layne Elementary School sat on the same site. Layne School has been in existence for over one hundred years. It was first held in a log cabin which later burned. It was located on the west side of present Denison. The building also served as the Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. A second building was later built. In 1948, a brick structure was erected. Layne School became a part of the Denison Independent School District in 1956. The district closed Layne Elementary School at the end of the spring semester of 2012. The school building was demolished later in the year and the land reverted to the original owner's descendants. ---- Gary Capshaw ( "I Love Denison and Its History" FB) A longtime principal of Layne School was Ozelle Bryant Gibson of Pottsboro, Texas. Another principal was Gordon T. Rutledge who later served on the board of trustees of the Denison Independent School District.
