Obituary for R.M. Cannon published in the Dallas Morning News on July 16, 1926 Van Alstyne, Grayson Co., Texas, July 15 - R.M. Cannon, 91, died Thursday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Umphress in Van Alstyne. Funeral services were held in Van Alstyne Friday afternoon at the First Christian Church. Mr. Cannon was born July 12, 1835 in South Carolina. At the age of 18 he came to Texas. In 1862 he married Miss Texia Dumas, after which he soon enlisted in the Civil War. Returning from the war, he located 6 miles east of Van Alstyne at a place known as Cannon, named for the Cannon family. The Cannon family and their descendants still own a large amount of land in the Cannon Community. He was married the second time to Miss Bettie J. Milam. Mr. Cannon was prominent in Masonic work, having been a member of the lodge of 64 years. He is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. John Umphress, wife of John Umphress, banker, landowner and business man of Van Alstyne; Mrs. Walter Barron of Dallas; and by 2 brothers, John Cannon, 97, of Van Alstyne; and Oscar Cannon, 78, of Van Alstyne; and Mrs. Eliza West, 84, of Denver, Colorado.
