"The
Cannon Cemetery is located four miles east of Van Alstyne, TX at 7018
FM 121 just before the intersection with Jim Cannon Road.
P.O. Box 732 7018 FM 121 Van Alstyne, Texas 75495 Decoration Day is the first Sunday in May each year, when family members are encouraged to place flowers on the graves. The Cannon Cemetery Association holds an open business meeting on Sunday afternoon, Decoration Day, and Trustees will be at the cemetery on Saturday and Sunday of that weekend to assist attendees and accept d onations for the upkeep of the Cemetery. Elijah
Cannon, his eleven sons and slaves moved
from South Carolina to Texas in 1852 and settled nearby in 1874. The
family
graveyard was included in land deeded by O. M. Cannon as a community
burial
place. The oldest documented grave is that of ten year old Nancy J.
Bowen
in 1857. An adjacent section was established for former slaves. And the
earliest known burials are those of Billy and Glory Boyd in August of
1880. Among the more than 700 graves are those of pioneer settlers,
veterans
of several wars, and member of fraternal organizations; the cemetery
continues
to serve the area.

the Cemetery Association: 'Hwy
121 used to divide the cemetery with the Afro-Am cemetery on one side
of the
road and the white cemetery on the other side of the road.
But now
the new Hwy 121 by-passes the cemetery and the old Hwy 121 is a drive
through
the cemetery.'
