Sherman Democrat Sept 16, 1928 Pioneer Dies Van Alstyne , Sept. 15 - Funeral services were held at Cannon Saturday afternoon for John R. Cannon, 99 years old, who died here Friday night, following a long illness. The services were conducted by the Rev. Elmer D. Henson, pastor of the First Christian church, and were followed by interment in the Cannon cemetery. J.D.L. McKinney assisted at the service. Active pallbearers were as follows: Carl Umphress, W.D. Benton, Dr. S.H. Bryan, Henry D. Hynds, Royce Cannon, Creed Taylor, J.M. McLemore and W.L. Kinard. Honorary : F.R. Slaughter, A.H. Blassingame, Lawrence Bowen, Will Kemp, Mack Burk, A.T. Leslie, S.L. McKinney, J.H. Sheld, Walter Barron, Dallas; J.H. Arnspiger, Dr. William Veazey, O.B. Cotton, James Ferguson, G.T. McDonough, J.D.L. McKinney, John Umphress and T.H. Massie. Mr. Cannon was a native of Pickens County, South Carolina, but had made his home in Grayson county since 1852, except for four years spent in the service of the Confederacy during the War between the States. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Cannon, born Aug. 25, 1829 and before his death was the oldest person in Grayson county. With his parents he settled at Cannon, five miles east of Van Alstyne, when coming to Texas, remaining at that place until 1895, when he moved to Van Alstyne, making his home here since that time. He was never married. At the beginning of the war, Mr. Cannon enlisted in the Confederate army, serving with Company "A" of Hardeman's regiment, Gano's brigade, during the four years of that conflict. He held the rank of lieutenant when the war closed. Three of his brothers, all deceased, also served in the army of the Confederacy, these being William R., Reece M., and Woody Cannon. A brother, Oscar M. Cannon, the only one living of the original Cannon family of eleven children, survives Mr. Cannon, together with a number of other relatives, among these being a niece, Mrs. T.H.
