Rufus Scott 16 December 1847 - 15 February 1925 Sherman Democrat February 19, 1925 RUFUS SCOTT Rufus Scott was born in the State of Missouri on December 15, 1847. His boyhood and young manhood were spent in the State of his Nativity. About 46 years ago, he moved to Texas, locating in this community of which he has been a resident since. For a number of years he operated a farm in the Jameson community, east of town, and was very successful. About six years ago, he gave up active work, although retaining his ownership of his farm, and moved in to Van Alstyne, where he lived until his death last Sunday, at the age of 77 years, 1 month, and 30 days. In his boyhood, Mr. Scott was converted and united with the Baptist church remaining an adherent of that denomination until about 8 years ago, when he united with the Christian church of which faith he remained a communicant until his death. On November 7, 1894, Mr. Scott was married to Mrs. D. O. Winsett, by whom he is survived together with five step-children. Funeral services were held on last Monday conducted by Rev. Leo Johnston, pastor of the Christian church, with interment at the Cannon cemetery. The services were held in the tabernacle at Cannon and were largely attended by friends and relatives from this community and from other places. The services were very impressive, the remarks of the officiating minister constituting a splendid tribute to the life of the deceased. In the passing of Mr. Scott, another of the older men, the pioneers of this section, have passed into rest. Unusually quiet and retiring, he impressed all who came into contact with him with his sturdiness of character and his devotion to the ideals of a true man, a genuine Christian and all that could be desired in his attitude toward his family. His death is the cause of sincere regret on the part of all who knew him, and the sympathy of all of the people of this community is most generously proffered to the family and relatives.
