Sunday, January 6, 1889 pg. 2 July 1 - The Denison Rifles Band made their first appearance in public at the Boulevard. July 2 - The Fashion restaurant closed its doors....The new uniforms for the Denison Fire Department arrived....Mayor Tone's house caught fire, and the building was damaged to the extent of $100. July 4 - A grand Fourth of July celebration was held. The Maxey Rifles and Paris Light Guards, of Paris, the Grayson Rifles, of Sherman, and the Dallas Light Guards, of Dallas, were the visiting military companies present. The fire departments of Sherman, McKinney, Gainesville and Denton were in attendance. The Mechanic's Band of Greenville, the McKinney Band, the Philharmonic Band and the Denison Rifles' Band furnished the music for the occasion. A grand procession took place in the morning, consisting of military companies, fire departments, bands, floats, etc. In the afternoon a prize drill contest took place, in which the Dallas Light Guards took first prize, $100 and the Grayson Rifles second prize, $50. At night a grand ball was given to the visiting military companies by the Denison Rifles....The baby of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Maddox died....The Evening Dispatch made its first appearance. July 6 - News was received of the death of Hon. Richard Maltbie, at Austin....Mr. Walterhouse extended the street car line two blocks north on Tone avenue. July 7 - The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rosenvant died. July 8 - A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Platter....William Miller, aged twenty years, died....The grocery firm of Hogg, Tobin & Co. dissolved, Mr. Tobin retiring. July 11 - The livery stable of Harnest Brothers was burned, together with seventeen horses and a number of carriages and wagons. July 12 - An old man named Carey, aged ninety years, died very suddenly. July 12 - Mrs. Richard A. Williams, aged twenty years, died....Bessie, the eighteen-months-old child of Mr. and Mrs. George R. Maple, died. July 13 - Ex-Mayor Sam Hanna was elected an honorary member of the Denison Rifles. July 17 - Mrs. J.T. Irvin died of heart disease. July 18 - The attached jewelry stock of J.P. Dolferty was sold at public auction to Col. J.B. Simpson, of Dallas....Mr. Jake Gerlach and Miss Caroline Ginter were married by Justice Hinkle at Sherman....Wm. Hardwick was elected councilman of the Fourth ward for the unexpired term of J.T. Hogg, who resigned. July 24 - Messrs. Bowls and Jones purchased the news stand of Dick Chamberlain. July 26 - Mr. J.P. Doherty opened up a repair shop for watches and jewelry in the BIsmark block. July 28 - Eddie, the eight year old son of Mrs. Henry Henicke, died. July 30 - Ed. Blake, the stenographer, operator and type writer of the Missouri Pacific Master Mechanic's office, died with typhoid fever....Miss Ida Mayton, aged nineteen years, died.
