Sunday, January 6, 1889 pg. 2 Jan 1 - Col. J.H. Britton, of Sherman, died at the Wakefield Hotel....Judge J.M. Cook married two couples. One couple were residents of this city and the other came from the Indian Territory....The Pacific express company discontinued business on the H. & T.C. Railway, leaving the Wells-Fargo company to do the business....A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Boullard. Jan 2 - The free delivery system was established with the following carriers: No. 1, T.A. Nelms; No. 2, W.C. Bridendolph; No. 3, J.B. Morrell; No. 4, C.R. Scholl....The son of Mr. and Mrs. Barney Daniels, aged twenty-one years, died from the effects of a cancer. Jan 3 - Dr. Wallace, of the Live Drug Store, purchased the L.J. Duncan stock....The engine and machinery for the natural gas well arrived and hauled out to the derrick. Jan 4 - Mr. A.T. Shearer, a hide merchant, sold out to Mr. James Blassingame....John Lanenger purchased the Buckhorn Saloon from John Anderson....Messrs. Knaur & Son began the erection of a comodious addition to their foundry on Chestnut street, to be used as a machine shop....The Citizens Building and Loan Association was organized....Arrangements were completed between the Denison & Washita Valley Railway company and prominent citizens of Indian Territory, whereby said company secured the lease of coal fields. Jan 6 - The first seven miles of the Denison & Washita Valley Railway was finished....The capital stock of the Denison & Washita Valley Railway was increased from $200,000 to $2,000,000....A meeting of horticulturalists and citizens was held at A.R. Collins' office for the purpose of arranging a program to entertain the horticulturalists who would pass through the city en route to California. Jan 8 - The Red Front clothing house had a big "ad" in the Gazetteer printed in red. Jan 9 - Mr. and Mrs. Levi Lingo celebrated their silver wedding....Work was commenced on the natural gas well. Jan 10 - The annual elections of the First National and State National Banks took place....Mrs. Bettie May Decker died....A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chris Waltz....The annual meeting of the Fairview cemetery was held at the office of A.R. Collins. Jan 11 - Nellie Haley, an inmate of Rivers' demmonde, was found dead in her bed....M.S. Leigle let the contract for a residence in the southern part of the city....L.C. Holt, a contractor on the Denison & Washita Valley Railway, died. Jan 12 - George Werneburg, a tailor, died at the age of sixty-three years....Charly Eastman, of the Indian Territory, and Mrs. R.S. Hopper, of this city, married. Jan 13 - The North American Horticultural Society, six hundred strong, arrived in the city, on their way to California, and stopped over. They were royally entertained by the citizens. Jan 14 - The Missouri Pacific round house and thirteen engines were burned. Jan 15 - An infant child belonging to a poor family living on Armstrong avenue, died. Jan 17 - A child of Henry Gillian (Colored), died. Jan 19 - News was received of the failure of R.G. Hall & Co. of Sherman. Jan 20 - Dr. Markham's residence south-east corner Mirck avenue and Woodard street, was burned. Jan 22 - An excursion over the Denison & Washita Valley Railway was made on a hand car by the officers of the road. Mr. Frank Kohfeldt and Miss Josie Glitky were married at the residence of the bride's father, by Rev. F.N. Atkin....The seven-months-old child of Mr. J.H. Webb, who lives on the Freeman place near the city, died. Jan 27 - George Stroube died at his residence on Crawford street. Jan 30 - A sample of coal from one of the mines on the Denison & Washita Valley rail road, was received. Jan 31 - L.J. Stoneman began the erection of a four-room cottage on Chestnut street....John Lallamant, a Denison boy, was run over and killed at Caddo, I.T., on the Missouri Pacific Railway....Mrs. Elizabeth Metcalf, aged twenty-eight years, died of pulmonary consumption.
