BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES

J. B. Raines was born in Pike County, Missouri, June 23, 1872. He moved with his parents to Grayson County, settling near Tioga, Texas where he farmed for a number of years. On August the 4th, 1897 he was married to Miss Sallie Cook of Tioga, Texas. In the fall of 190_, Mr. Raines and his family moved to Collinsville, Texas, the birth place of Gov. William H. Murray. Mr. Raines moved to Collinsville to act as public weigher. He served in this capacity until the fall of 1912, when he was elected County Assessor of Grayson County. The duties of this office made it necessary for him to move to Sherman, Texas. He held this office for four years, being elected for the second term without opposition. For the year 1917, he was traveling salesman for the well-known firm of Hardwick-Etter Company of Sherman, Texas. In the fall of 1917, he moved to Durant, Oklahoma, to become manager of The Indian Territory Building and Loan Association. He has been manager of this institution ever since. Through his company he has helped to finance the building of many beautiful homes in Bryan and adjoining counties. In the early part of 1931, he was appointed to member of the Building and Loan Board for the entire State of Oklahoma. This board has supervision of all the building and loan associations doing business in Oklahoma. This appointment was made by the Honorable William H. Murray, the present governor of Oklahoma and the next President of the United States. This is quite a coincidence as Mr. Raines was a citizen of this community for more than thirty years and Governor Murray was born near Collinsville. Mr. Raines is an ardent supporter of Governor Murray and will join with his old friends in Collinsville and Grayson County on February 18th to welcome the next president back to his birth place. Mr. Raines believes that Governor Murray is thoroughly honest and honorable. Knowing this he feels it his duty to support him in every way possible in his fight against big interests and for the common people. He says that Oklahoma is safe for Murray beyond the shadow of a doubt and he now commends him to Texas and his native state, Missouri.
