You will find on this page information on those that have served our country from Salem Township. Some died for their efforts and some received injuries that they never overcame during the remainder of their lifetime. For those who put their lives on the line for our freedom and ideals, whether they be our neighbors or family, we should be eternally grateful.
Any omissions are purely accidental and I welcome anyone who wants to submit an ancestor for inclusion here. Most of these names came from local histories and the Adamsville Baptist and New Hope Cemeteries so there are bound to be some missing. We would hope that this page will not grow except to include only those that already have served during and armed conflict.

The 159th was mustered late in the war. The time of service was a little over 3 months which gave them the nickname, "100 day men," and most of that time found the regiment protecting the Barracks at Baltimore. During the Battle of the Monacacy in Maryland, the 159th saw action. Though there were many wounded, few of the regiment lost their lives. Some 100 soldiers were commandeered to act as mounted infantry under Capt. E. H. Leib of the 5th Calvary and Capt. H. S. Allen.
Upon completion of their allotted time, a statement signed by Abraham Lincoln was drafted as follows:
EXECUTIVE MANSION, The term of 100 days for which the National Guard
of Ohio volunteered having expired, the President directs an official acknowledgment to be
made of the patriotic and valuable services during the recent campaigns. The term of service
of their enlistment was short, but distinguished by memorable events. In the Valley of the
Shenendoah, on the Peninsula, in the operations of the James River, around Petersburg and
Richmond, in the Battle of the Monacacy, and in the entrenchment's of Washington, and in
other
important service, the National Guard of Ohio performed with alacrity the duty of patriotic
volunteers, for which they are entitled to and hereby tendered, through the Governor of their
State, their national thanks. ABRAHAM LINCOLN |

Many of the 1890 Federal Population Census records were destroyed by fire which occurred in the Commerce Department Building in January of 1921, and there are but few of those schedules left. The only reliable sources of information for that period are the Special Schedules which enumerate the, Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
