The book by Oscar Lewis is primarily based on information derived from the Reese River Reveille, one of the earliest, if not the first, newspaper in Nevada. It didn't have an index, so I spent an evening putting this together. In most cases it doesn't show all the possible pages a name showed up on, but the key ones.

Reuben Martin, a native of Virginia aged about 24 years, was shot by John Spiker about half-past one o'clock Monday morning, under the following circumstances: Martin had been in the habit of occupying the cabin of F. Heldman as a sleeping place, and on Sunday night after the other occupants had retired, Spiker entered and asked permission to lie down on the floor, which was granted him. Martin, who was absent at the time, then came home, considerably under the influence of liquor, and after striking a light and observing someone on the floor beside his bed, commenced abusing him and ordered him to leave, at the same time cocking his revolver and threatening to shoot. Spiker tried to argue the case with him, but finding it useless, left the house, followed by Martin, who commenced firing at Spiker, who returned in like manner. Five shots were exchanged, one of which entered the right breast of the deceased, passing through the lungs and lodging just beneath the skin on the back, which caused death in about twelve hours. Spiker was arrested, examined before Judge Logan, and was acquitted. [page 166]
