Mercer County was created in 1838 from portions of Burlington, Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Somerset Counties. It is situated in the west-central portion of the state along the Delaware River with a land area of 228 square miles. The western part of the county is dominated by greater metropolitan Trenton, the political heart of the state serving both as the county seat and the capital of New Jersey.
