Sullivan County
New Hampshire

Sullivan County was organized in September, 1827. It was  named for General John Sullivan, a Revolutionary War hero, New Hampshire attorney general and judge. County seat: Newport. Sullivan County is also the birthplace of America's machine tool industry. Sullivan County is located in western New Hampshire, along the Vermont border. It consists of 528 square miles and contains a population of 39,370. Its largest city is Claremont with a population of 14,050. Twelve percent of Sullivan County is prime farmland. Many of these 18th century farms are still in the same family. Primary industries include manufacturing, retail, health care and higher education. Several historic mill communities are also located in Sullivan County.

A landmark in Sullivan County is Fort at No 4, a Living History Museum. This museum was originally constructed in the middle of what is now the town of Charlestown. A plaque commemorates this fact. The Fort #4 replica was constructed about a mile or so away as it required some acreage for this living museum.  For those interested in genealogy,  and are interested in life during the Colonial Days. Visit their web site:  www.fortat4.com
