  Mrs. Sarah M. Adcock, wife of Lee Adcock. and a daughter of Major and Mrs. J. W. Brush, of this city died at her home two and a half west of Peru, Wednesday, June 6th, of consumption, aged 27 years and 8 months . Deceased had been sick for some time and while her death was not unexpected, it was a great shock to her relatives and friends, She leaves a husband, three children, father, mother, three sisters and four brothers to mourn her early demise. Mrs. Adcock was a devoted member of the Christian church. The funeral took place Friday, Rev. Chamberlain of the Christian church of Nemaha City preaching the funeral sermon, and her remains were interred in the London cemetery, followed to the grave by a large concourse of relatives and friends. submitted by Dan Hill | Top |

  MAJOR BRUSH WHO FOUGHT
  UNDER TWO FLAGS IN
  THREE WARS IS DEAD
      Joseph W. Brush, pioneer and soldier, and is one of the unique figures of the county died at his home in this city, August 13, 1911. At the great age of ninety years. six months and two days.
      Mr. Brush was a veteran of the Mexican war, one of the California argonnuts, a soldier of the civil war, and a pioneer of Nebraska.
      The deceased was born at Fairfax Vt., February 11, 1820. He was married to his first wife, Adeline Sattuck, April 3, 1842. She died March 8, 1846. He was married the second time to Clarice Jane Curtis, October 12, 1854. To the first union was born Mary Ann Brush and to the second union eleven children, namely Doris E. Brush, who now lives in Texas; Anderson P. Brush, of Glenrock; Brown Lee Brush, deceased; Thomas Brush, deceased; Jay H. Brush, deceased; Thomas Brush, of California, Charles J. Brush. Auburn; Mrs. Emma Holloway. Mrs. Sarah Adcock, dead. Mrs. Anna Lorance, Omaha; Mrs. Nellie Porter, Table Rock; Clarisa Brush, dead.
      The life of Major Brush, which spanned nearly a century. was a most eventful one. In his youth he entered a woolen factory in Toronto, Canada, where he worked for some time. He was a member of a military band when the Canadian InsurrectIon occurred in 1837-8 and was in the engagement known as the battle of the windmills, at the outlet of Lake Champlain. In this war Canada tried to get rid of English rule.
      In 1841, with eight other young men he went to Ft. Wayne, Ind., to install a woolen factory.  At the time Ft. Wayne was an important trading post for the Pottawattomie Indians. Col. Winfield Scott was in command of the post at the time, Mr. Brush joined the command of Col. Scott in 1848 and he helped to move the Indians. 1.500 strong to their new reservation beyond the Missouri river. On the first of October of that year he with 500 other soldiers and the band of Indians arrived at Nebraska City, which was then Ft. Kearney. The first camp was on the farm owned by J. Sterling Morton and Major Brush killed a buffalo near the mouth of the creek on that farm. Afterwards camps were made at Camp Creek, Glenrock, and Pawnee City. Elk and buffalo were plentiful in the county at the time.
      He mustered out In the spring of the following year and he returned to his home in Vermont. He told stories of the wonderfully fertile land of the west and urged people to go out and settle there. Finally his father warned him to quit as he would get the reputation of being the biggest liar on earth.
      When James K. Polk issued his call for 50,000 troops to fight Mexico. Major Brush again enlisted to the army. He was a member of the army of the West and was with it when it was assembled at Ft. Leavenworth. He was mustered in at New York City, and was a member of the 2nd Indiana infantry. He took part In the battles of Buena Vista. Vera Cruz and Cerro Gordo. He served in this war three years and fifteen days.
      In 1850. with a wagon train of fifty vehicles, he again visited Nebraska. He was with a party of gold seekers that were on their way overland to California. He tried mining Sutters mills, where gold was first discovered and afterwards kept a hotel at Sacremento. He had as borders (sic) at his place such well-known Nebraska pioneers as Patrick Daugherty, of South Auburn, Dr. H. L. Matthews who died a few years ago; Jesse Cole. sr., and his two sons, John and Jesse, jr., and a man named Robinson, who afterwards kept the American house at Brownville.
      The major enlisted in the army again at the outbreak of the civil war and was in a number of sharp engagements and battles. He came to this county in 1865, at the conclusion of the civil war and was for years one of the most highly respected citizen. He first located in London precinct. A number of years ago he came to Auburn and on every Fourth of July, and on Decoration day for years and years, until he finally became incapicated (sic), he played the drum while Wm. Paris played the fife.
      Among the other things that distinguished Major Brush, was the fact that he was undoubtedly the oldest Mason in the state. He joined the organization when he was twenty-one years of age and was a member of the order for 69 years. He was initiated in the historic Vergennes lodge, at Vergennes, Vt.
      Major Brush was a man of the strongest character. He was a true patriot, honest and upright in everything that he did. He was a member of the M. E. church. The funeral took place Tuesday morning and was very largely attended. The interment was in the family plat in London cemetery where the major lived for so many years.

  Deceased Was Born in this County and Was Married in Auburn—Was a
  Daughter of the Late Major Brush, Mexican and Civil War Veteran.
  Mrs. Asa Porter, a native of Nemaha county, and who has many relatives here, died September 17, of erysipelas, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Burrow, at Table Rock.
  Nellie Ellen Brush was a daughter of the late Major Brush, and was born in London precinct, April 7, 1871. She was united in
  marriage to Asa Porter, in Auburn. February 26, 1890.
  After living here for some years Mr. and Mrs. Porter moved to the vicinity of Table Rock, where they resided on a farm which they sold about a year ago. They went from there to Seneca, Kansas where they purchased a place and had since resided.
  Some time ago Mrs. Porter suffered an attack of erysipelas, from which she recovered. She was able to visit the families of Chas. Brush and Thos. Holloway in Auburn, during the fair and she then seemed to be in normal health.
  While visiting at the home of her daughter at Table Rock she had some dental work done and erysipelas again set set in, resulting in her death.
  Mrs. Porter was a member of one of the pioneer families of the county. She was a woman who was blessed with many lovely traits of character. She was a devoted mother and a loyal wife in every sense of the word. Early in life she united with the Methodist church and she carried the precepts of her religion and faith into her daily life. She was the soul of charity and generosity. When any of her neighbors were in sickness or trouble she would do all that lay in her power to nurse or comfort them. Mrs. Porter is survived by her husband, and three daughters, Mrs. Ed. Burrow, Mrs. Fred Burrow and Bessie Porter, and by five grand-children; also by four brothers, Charles Brush, and Anderson Brush of Auburn; Faye Brush, of California, and Doris Brush, of Maryland; also by two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Holloway, of Auburn, and Mrs. Anna, Caffrarty, of Omaha.
  The funeral services were held at the Methodist church, at Table Rock, two o'clock, Sunday afternoon. The edifice as crowded with mourners. Among them were about 25 families which had come from Seneca, Kansas, where the deceased had resided only a short time but so great had her goodness been that these persons mourned with the sincerity of old friends. A large cortege followed the remains to the cemetery. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful in the extreme.

  Death of J. N. Brush.
  Joshua N. Brush died Sunday, March 26, 1899, at the home of his nephew Charles Brush in London precinct, aged 75 years, 8 months and 26 days.  Dr. Brush, as he was familiarly known was born in Fairfax, Vermont, June 9, 1823. He came to Nebraska, in 1874, making his home in London precinct, with his brother Major J. W. Brush.  In 1882 he came to Calvert, now part of this city and built the first house in the place. He continued his residence here until a year ago, since which time be has been stopping with his brother and nephews. During [President] Cleveland's first administration he was postmaster of South Auburn.  For several years his health has been failing and most of the time during the past year he was confined to his bed. His death was due to chronic peritonitis. He leaves a son residing in Minnesota. His wife died. before he came to this county. He leaves also a brother, Major J. W. Brush of this city, a brother and a sister at Fairfax, Vt., and another sister at Essex Center, Vt. To the relatives sympathy is extended.  Funeral was held Tuesday at 10:00 a. m., at the residence of Chas. Brush in London precinct, services being conducted by Dr. John Gallagher of the M. E. church of this city, and his remains were interred in the London cemetery. Peace to his ashes.

  PIONEER LADY PASSES AWAY
  MRS. A. P. BRUSH, OLD RESIDENT DIED AT HER HOME IN AUBURN TUESDAY P. M.
  Sarah A. Saulcy was born at London Precinct, Nemaha County Nebraska, March 19th, 1862. She died at her home in Auburn, Nebraska January 3rd 1922. Aged 59 years, 9 months and 15 days.
  She was united in marriage with A. P. Brush at London Precinct on January 10th, 1882. To this union two children were born, Viola and Arthur. Viola having departed this life in infancy.
  There are left to mourn her departure the husband A. P. Brush, a son Arthur W. Brush of Auburn Nebraska.
  One brother Geo. Saulcy of Lincoln Nebraska and a sister Mrs. Victoria Davis who resides near Auburn and a host of acquaintances and friends.
  The funeral services were held at the Auburn M. E. church on Thursday January 5th at 2 o'clock p. m. conducted by Rev. D. A. McCullough minister of the church. Burial was at London cemetery.
  The deceased lady was a native of Nemaha county and had resided ir the county all her life. About two years ago tbe family moved from their farm to Auburn.

  MRS, CAROLINE SAULCY DIED SUNDAY MORNING
  WELL KNOWN WOMAN HAD REACHED ADVANCED AGE
  Passed Away At the Home of Her Son, George Saulcy. East of Town in Her Eighty-Eighth Year—Funeral Monday Afternoon.
  Mrs. Caroline Saulcy died last Sunday morning at the home of her son, George Saulcy east of this city. Mrs. Saulcy had reached the age of eighty-eight years and death ended a beautiful and useful life leaving behind the benediction of many acts of loving kindness and the memories of her gentle nature that blessed all with whom she came in contact.
  Caroline Empson was a native of England and was born February 9, 1827. She was married to Joseph Saulcy and in 1857 they came to America and in 1860 located at Brownville. This county had been the home of the deceased ever since and during the long years of her residence here she had made a wide circle of intimate friends and had come to be one of the most highly respected and best known women of the community. Together with her husband she had shared the life of the pioneers in a new country and her strong traits of character and her high sense of the duties of womanhood had won for her a place of usefulness in this country and this usefulness did not end while life remained. She was a member of the Auburn Methodist church and was a sincere Christian woman whose life exemplified the faith that she had professed.
  The deceased is survived by three children: Mrs. Sarah Brush of Glenrock, Mrs. Victoria Davis of Auburn and George Saulcy at whose home she died. She is also survived by five grandchildren and five great grand children and also by two brothers, one of whom still lives in England and one, Watson Saulcy of Council Bluffs, Iowa, who was present at the funeral.
  The funeral was held Monday afternoon at Bethel church and the services were conducted by Rev. Connely in the presence of a large number of the friends of the family. At the conclusion of the services the remains were laid to rest in London Cemetery.

  AGED MAN DIES FOLLOWING FALL
  INJURIES PROVED FATAL TO NEMAHA COUNTY MAN
  George Saulcy Died at State Hospital From Effects of Injuries
  Sustained in Fall Last Week-Brought Here For Burial.
  George Saulcy passed away at the State Hospital in Lincoln March 4 [1928], at the age of 70 years and 20 days. Last week Mr. Saulcy suffered a fall which resulted in a fractured hip, and because of his advanced age and weakened condition he was unable to withstand the shock. For many years Mr. Saulcy was one of the prominent farmers of Nemaha county and was in every way a good and useful citizen. He has a wide circle of friends in this community who mourn his death and who will extend their condolences to the members of his family.
  George F. Saulcy was born in Dayton, Ohio February 14, 1858. He came with his parents to Nemaha county in 1859 and the family settled on a farm about four miles west of Brownville where he grew to manhood. He was married to Rebecca Savell, and he and his bride went to live on a farm four miles east of Auburn and it was there that his wife passed away May 4. 1900. Both were conscientious Christians, being members of the Methodist church in Auburn. He grieved over  the death of his wife until he became a victim of brain fever which resulted in the breaking down of his health.
  Mr. Saulcy had led a very active life. He took a deep interest in farm activities, especially live stock breeding. He served for years as precinct assessor and his opinion was frequently sought as to the value of farm animals as he such matters. He was a member of was regarded as an authority on such matters. He was a member of the Breeder's Association of St. Joseph Mo.
  There are no children surviving him, but other relatives who remain to mourn his passing are one sister, Mrs. Victoria Davis of Auburn and three cousins, Mrs. A. R. Peery, and C. B. Thompson of this city and Mrs. Nellie Young of Los Angeles, Cal. One sister, Mrs. A. P. Brush passed away in January.
  The remains were brought to Auburn Monday and funeral services were conducted at the Auburn Methodist church Tuesday afternoon by Rev. F. M. Druliner. A number of the old friends and neighbors were present on this solemn occasion. Following the services the interment was made in London cemetery.
