ZAMA SHOLES, died 1882
Independence Bulletin, Independence, IA - May 26, 1882
It is painful to record the sorrows and sufferings of our friends and neighbors, but there is a degree of pleasure in expressions of sympathy when the heart is bowed with grief, as in the instances of the last few weeks in our community. Great sorrow crept into the hearts of all as the funeral procession passed through our streets last Thursday, bearing the remains of Squire Sholes’ beautiful little daughter to her last resting place. Like a beautiful flower destroyed by the frost, disease was relentless, and defying medical skill and tenderest nursing, tore from her parents hearts their precious jewel, a bright little daughter, aged about 12 years, another exhibition of that dread disease, diphtheria, which too often leaves the physician and his remedies utterly powerless.
~Submitter, Sandy Dempsey (family researcher)
Research Note: Zama was the youngest daughter of Elijah and Sarah Sholes. Zama died in Iowa and was buried there before the family came to Antelope County Nebraska.
