Thomas was born out at sea on the Indian Ocean on 9 November 1828 to George and Janet Morris. There are records which indicate he was born in Scotland and Bombay, India which may have been a residence while out at sea. George was born in Cornwall, England and Janet in Glasgow, Scotland.
In 1863 Thomas married Margaret Mary Morton [she used mostly Martha] who was born on 12 July 1838 in County Waterford, Ireland. She indicated in a census that she immigrated in 1860. There were six children from this marriage:
John Thomas (1864) - Burial.
Eliza Janet (25 Sep 1866 - 30 Jan 1956), married George Frederick Speck, died in Los Angeles County, California.
Fannie (1869) - Burial.
Margaret (1871) - Burial.
George (1873) - Burial.
Edward (1875) - (See above).
Thomas indicated in a census that he immigrated in 1849. In 1853 he enlisted into the Army. In 1860 he is a soldier at Fort Defiance, Bernalillo, New Mexico Territory. This writer could not find the family in the 1870 census but their first son, John, was born in 1864 in Washington, D. C., their third child, Fannie, was born in 1869 in Oklahoma Territory, and in 1871 their daughter, Margaret, was born in Fort Totten, Benson County. In 1880 the family is in Ramsey County and Thomas is a soldier. The family is in Eddy County by 1886.
No record could be found by this writer of Thomas being in the Civil War but for sure he was in the U. S. Army. He enlisted in the Army in 1853 and retired on 7 May 1885 as a Sergeant. Those 32 years involved eight enlistments. In 1864, during the Civil War, their oldest child was born in Washington, D. C.
While in Eddy County the Morris Post Office was established on 13 February 1886 on his homestead in Eddy Township (T150 R63), Section 20. In 1900 Thomas and Martha appear to be retired and living in New Rockford. Sometime after 1910 they relocated to Warwick, Benson County where both died and are buried in the Warwick Cemetery.
