Written by Mrs. Ralph Pierson
The first settlers in Beaver Township were James and Art Hendrie and Olof Peirson. James and Art Hendrie settled at the foot of the range of hills called the Buttes. The land in Beaver was surveyed during the summer of 1889, the surveyors camping on the Dokken land (Ness now) and the Hendrie land, where there were natural springs. Mr. Pierson squatted on land in the spring of 1889, as it was not yet surveyed. On March 3, 1904, the citizens of Congressional Township Number 155, North Range Number 69 West, in Benson County, North Dakota petitioned the County Commissioners to organize that area as a civil township under the Township Organization Laws and that it be named "Beaver". There were six signatures on the petition. The first meeting of the Township Board was held March 15 1904 at the Tosten Berven home.
C.J. Anderson, A.F. Hendrie, L.L. Elstad were the first supervisors, James Hendrie was clerk and L.B. Sandven, Treasurer. The township was named "Beaver" for Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, the home of Andrew Fuller, one of the early settlers,
James Hendrie
James Hendrie was born August 11, 1857, in Quebec, Canada. He spent his boyhood days there, coming to the States in 1889, in company with four brothers and homesteaded in Beaver Township. In 1891 he went to Towner and was employed in the ranching business for some years. He later returned to his homestead where he continued farming. He was active in community affairs, serving on the Town Board for 21 years as clerk and on the school board for 40 years. He died July 3, 1940.
Art P. Hendrie
Art Hendrie was born March 17, 1863, in Quebec, Canada. He farmed in Beaver, in the foothills of the "buttes", a range of hills reminiscent of a mountain range, until 1937, when he and his wife moved to Leeds. He died at the age of 95.

Olof Pierson was born in Sweden on April 19, 1869. He came to America with the family in 1883, staying at Jamestown, North Dakota, the first year, then drove out to Minnewaukan in a covered sleigh, drawn by a team of mules. When the family lived at Minnewaukan, Mr. Pierson and his father picked buffalo bones on these prairies, their trips taking them up to York Lake and the Buttes. This project netted them five to six dollars a ton. In the spring of 1889, the Pierson family settled in Beaver Township, where he farmed extensively until his death in August, 1948. Other interests besides his faming were Herford cattle and Percheron horses, at one time he was the sixth largest Percheron breeder in the United States. Olof married Mary B. Hanson on January 23 1897 at Leeds, North Dakota.
Iver Stand was born in Hallingdal, Norway on August 11, 1845. He immigrated to the United States in 1855. With his family, he came to Beaver from Benson, Minnesota in 1895. His son, Henry, who married Rachel Thompson, the sister of Anthon, Robert and Moures Thompson, on August 14, 1907 also homesteaded on land in Beaver Township. |
Anthon Thompson was born December 2, 1872 at Benson, Minnesota. He was the first of the Thompson brothers to come to this community. In company with other adventurous friends, Anthon left Benson in the spring of 1896 in a covered wagon. They stayed for a short time at Emerado, then drove to the Red Lake Reservation in Minnesota to look for land but were unsuccessful there, so went back to Emerado. Anthon's friends had relatives near Leeds, so they decided to come here to locate. Anthon sold his team and they came to Leeds on the Train. They arrived here on the 6th of July 1896 and it is apparent that Anthon was inspired by the possibilities of these Dakota prairies as he filed on his homestead on the 11th of July. He worked in the harvest fields near Leeds that fall but returned to Benson for the winter. Early in the spring of 1897 he came back to North Dakota, built his first home (a lumber frame which was later reinforced with sod) and set about breaking up his homestead and put in his first crop. Anton married Ingeborg Loken born March 26 1879 in Olden, Norway. She and her sister Agnes (Mrs. Andrew J. Kirkeide) immigrated in 1898. Ingeborg first came to her cousin, Bent Muri who lived in Albert Township of Benson County, and worked as an indentured servant to repay her passage to America. She homesteaded near Nanson in Rollette County. Her land patent was issued in 1903. Anton and Ingeborg were married August 13,1902.
|
Robert Thompson who was born April 24, 1874 at Benson, Minnesota, left Benson in 1896, going to Emerado to join his brother, Anthon who then left for Benson County. Robert and Oline Halstensdt Muri were married at Mekinock in 1896 and lived there that first winter. Robert Thompson came out to this vicinity in the spring of 1897 from Mekinock, North Dakota. Robert started out for Leeds on a bicycle, but because of a great deal of rain had to take the train from Lakota. He filed on his homestead in June, 1897, then returned to Mekinock. He traded off his bicycle and now became the proud possessor of a pony and buggy and this time he drove out to Leeds. Tosten Berven tells of the day when Robert came driving along with his pony and buggy. Mr. Berven and Lars Sandven had just finished their house and were putting on the tar paper roofing, when this prospective neighbor drove up, inquiring about land. Oline Thompson and their son Thilmer came out later in the summer. The Thompson family lived with his brother Anthon for two years, moving to their own home in the summer of 1899.
Moures Thompson who was born September 1, 1876 at Benson, Minnesota came from Benson, Minnesota in January of 1900, filing on his homestead at that time. His brothers, Anthon and Robert, had evidently told him of these rich, fertile prairies that produced number on grain, so he too decided to establish a farm in North Dakota. He returned to Benson for the remainder of the winter and came back to his homestead in the fall of 1900, when he built his mansion, the typical one-room shack of pioneer days. Anthon and Robert did the breaking for Moures during the summer of 1900, and also put his first crop, 15 acres of flax in the spring of 1901. Moures tells of the modest equipment he shipped up from Benson, which included a wagon, four horses and harness and his dog. He spent the summer of 1901 working near Churches Ferry, but settled down to batch on his homestead in the fall. Moures married Ann Christine Thorseth on January 16, 1904 at Knox, North Dakota.
Lars Sandven (L) born in Norheimsund, Norway in 1867 and immigrated to the U.S. when he was 18 years old, He came to Wilmar, Minnesota to join friends. He moved to Abercrombe, North Dakota, where he purchased 80 acres of land that his brother John owned, He married Karoline Bertina Lee June 3 1893 at Galcutt in Richland County, North Dakota. Tosten Berven (R) born in Ostenso, Norway in 1883 immigrated to the U.S. with a sister and four other young people in 1887 coming to Willmar, Minnesota. When they arrived, he and his sister divided their cash receiving 96 cents each. Lars and Tosten came together from Abercrombie, North Dakota in January 1897. They filed on land closely connected in the spring of 1897. They lived together in a frame house built across the dividing line of their land until Tosten's marriage on August 18, 1902 to Julia Guro Arhus in Leeds North Dakota. When they dissolved their partnership, they divided their property which included the house. This was sawed in half, cross-wise, each one moving his part to his farm. |
E.O. Dokken
E.O. Dokken was born in Norway and immigrated to this country in the year 1881. He came directly to Grand Forks, where he worked on a farm for several years. He then learned the carpenter trade. He came to our community in 1899, filing on a homestead in Beaver Township.
L.L. Elstad
L.L. Elstad, born May 8,1860 in Minnesota. He lived in Presho, South Dakota a while and came to Beaver in 1900. He served on the Township Board for 28 years and the School Board for 20 years. His son Ludvig farmed th land until his death and it is now owned by neighbors. He died-September 19, 1932, at Lanesboro, Minnesota.
Ole Erie
Ole Erie, born in Sogn, Norway, May 21, 1872 immigrated from Norway in 1901. He farmed at Leroy, Minnesota for three years. In 1904, he and his family came to Beaver Township and filed on land later farmed by a son, Oscar. He died in April, 1953.
Amund Tolo
Amund Tolo, born January 15, 1882, immigrated from Norway in 1902. He worked near Benson, Minnesota before coming to Beaver in 1904. After his wife Anna Sandven Tolo died in 1956 he lived on the farm with his son Leif, and daughter Gladys.
Gunder Lunell
Gunder Lunell was born in Sweden in 1884. He came to Beaver in 1901.
Andy Buchta
Andy Buchta, 1869-1945, was born in Czechoslovakia. He came to Leeds in 1901, and moved to Beaver in the year of 1905. He was one of the carpenters working on the Leeds Public School in 1901.
Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Anderson
Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Anderson were both born in Vestergotland, Sweden. Mr. Anderson came to the United States in 1886 and Mrs. Anderson in 1892. They were married in Moorhead, Minnesota, April 27, 1892. They were the parents of four children: Ellen, Alvida (Mrs. Orris Nordhougen), Carl and Leonard. Mr. Anderson was N.P. section foreman, helping to build the railroad into Leeds while homesteading on his farm two and a half miles southeast of Leeds. In 1901 he retired from the railroad and moved to his homestead and lived there until his death in 1937.
Names from the early days now gone are S.S. Ronning, Lewis Larson Charles Nelson, Louis Fosland, H.I. Swenson, Axel Olson, George Marlenee, John Hanson, C.H. Banks, C.O. Lindermann, N.J. Ryan, Syver Larson and others.
It is evident that the pioneers realized the immediate need of an education for their children, for on July 3, 1894, Beaver School District No. 15 was created and on August 11, 1894 the first Beaver School Board was organized. Records available show that the first board consisted of 5 members: treasurer, James Golding; clerk, Mrs. D. Kingsbury; and directors, E. Partch, A. Fuller & D. Kingsbury. At a special meeting held at the Kingsbury home on September 25, 1894 it was decided to have 6 weeks of school, this to be held upstairs of the Kingsbury home now known as the A. Piltingsrud farm occupied by Theo. Thompson (now the George Thompson farm).
The district operated one to two month sessions in farm homes until Beaver #1 was opened in 1898. The first register shows that there were 9 pupils enrolled. They were Elmer, Howard, Maggie, Mable, Myrtle, Pearl & Willie Kingsbury, Harold Hanson & Allie Markson. The teacher for the six weeks of school was Miss Anna Larsgard. In 1895 James Cassidy was the teacher, having 6 months of school from April until September. Twenty one pupils were enrolled & school was held at the Kingsbury place as in the previous year. The third year school was held in a sod house belonging to Wm. Rossin. There were 19 pupils enrolled and the teacher was Miss McGovern. School No. 1 was built in 1898. On October 28 1902, a special election was held to select a site for a second schoolhouse in the northwest part of the township. It is evident that a site for school No. 3 was selected at the same time. Beaver #2 was opened in 1903 and #3 in 1904. School No. 4 located in the southeast part of the township was approved in 1924 and opened in 1916..
K.B. Sandven, James Hendrie, Anton Thompson, L.L. Elstad & Moures Thompson served together on the Beaver School Board for 15 consecutive years. The last year of operation of Beaver School District #15 was in 1952-53 with an enrollment of nine students. The teacher was Bonita Britsch (later Mrs. Howard Thompson). The students where Colleen Thompson, Dennis Thompson, Judy Thompson, Carol Berven, Dwayne Erie, Clair Thompson, LaVon Berven, Ruth Sandven and Janice Thompson. The following year the elementary students went to the York School while the high school students went to Leeds. The last school board on file for Beaver was the 1957-58 school year and included: Mrs. Harold Berven, clerk; Mrs. R.J. Pierson, treasurer; Oscar Erie, president; Marvin Thompson & Alvin Thompson, directors. Beaver School District #15 became part of Leeds School District #6 on June 30, 1958. Beaver School #3, located on Hwy 30, is still in existence and is as of 2008 used as the Township Hall.
