Washington County was established 25 Jun 1789. In 1831 its western border between Hancock shifted, and northern portion became a part of the newly formed Penobscot County. In 1839, Washington County again released its northernmost territory to the formation of Aroostook County.
Today, Washington County is bordered by Aroostook County, Maine, to the North; York County, New Brunswick, Canada to the Northeast; Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada to the East; Penobscot County, Maine, to the West; Hancock County, Maine to the Southwest; and the Bay of Fundy coastline as its southern boundary.
Washington County holds the distinction of encompassing Lubec, Maine - the Easternmost point in the United States.
Machias is the County Seat.
