Adamstown Township - previous designation: 4R2, WBKP, Adams.

Albany - Settled 1784. Unincorported. Previous designations: No. 5; Oxford, Oxford Plantation; Plantation of Oxford. Requested incorporation as Oxford in January of 1803. Incorporated June 20, 1803. Part set off to Waterford in 1811. The act of incorporation was repealed on October 29, 1937. The organization surrendered on November 20, 1937. Principle settlement: Hunts Corner.

Andover - Settled 1789. Incorporated 23 June 1804 as East Andover. Previous designation: East Andover. Name changed to Andover on June 13, 1820.  Notes on Andover. According to Andover: The First 175 Years (1979), the town of Andover was not settled until 1789.

Bethel - Settled 1774. Incorporated 10 June 1796. Previous designation: Sudbury Canada. Part set off to help form Hanover on February 14, 1843.

Brownfield - Settled 1765. Incorporated 20 February 1802. Previous designation: Brownsfield. Part set off to Fryeburg on February 20,1807; part of Porter annexed February 20, 1807; part set off to Denmark on March 2, 1821; parts of Porter annexed February 19, 1831 and on Febraury 11, 1832. Part set off to Hiram April 23, 1852; part of Porter annexed March 17, 1855; and part set off to Denmark March 13, 1907. Principle settlements: Brownfield, West Brownfield, and Brownfield Station.

Buckfield - Settled 1776. Incorporated 16 March 1793. Previous designations: No. 5; Bucktown. Part set off to Paris on February 19, 1828. Part of Sumner annexed March 12, 1856. Part of Hartford annexed March 25, 1856.

Byron - Incorporated 24 January 1833. Previous designations: 8 AP; Skillertown.

Canton - Settled 1792. Set off from Jay and incorporated 5 February 1821. (Previous designation for Jay: Phipps Canada.) Parts set off to Jay on January 27, 1823, February 3, 1824, February 28, 1824, and on March 4, 1831. Parts of Hartford annexed February 25, 1839 and on August 8, 1850. Part set off to Peru April 2, 1859.

Denmark - Incorporated 20 February 1807. (Settled?) See Brownfield for previous designation. Formed from Fryeburg Academy Grant, Fosters Gore, and part of Brownfield. Part of Fryeburg annexed in 1813. Part of Brownfiled annexed March 2, 1821. Part set off to Sebago on March 12, 1830. Parts set off to Bridgton on March 7, 1842 and on August 2, 1847

Dixfield - Settled 1795. Incorporated 21 June 1803. Previous designations: No. 1; Holman Grant. Part of 4 AP annexed February 6, 1822 and set off February 1, 1827.

Fryeburg - Settled 1762. Incorporated 11 January 1777. Previous designations: Pequawket; Pequaket; Piggwackett; Pegwacket; Frye Tract. Part set of to New Hampshire in 1766. Part of Brownfield annexed in 1802. Part set off to Denmark 1813. Part set off to Bridgton on August 2, 1847.

Gilead - Settled 1780. Incorporated 23 June 1804. Previous designation: Peabodys (or Peabody's) Patent.

Grafton - Settled 1830. Organized 1840. "Wild land" township. Previous designations: A No. 2; Holmes. Part set off to Newry March 29, 1837. Boundary between Andover West Surplus and Grafton established Feb. 22, 1842. Incorporated March 19, 1852 the 387th town. Incorporation repealed Feb. 27, 1919

Greenwood - Settled 1802. Incorporated 2 February 1816. Previous designations: No. 4; Phillips Academy and Dummer Academy Grants. Part set off to Woodstock on February 17, 1893. Principle settlement: Locke Mills.

Hanover - Settled 1774. Incorporated 14 February 1843. Previous designation: Howards (or Howard's ) Gore (see Bethel). Formed from Howards Gore and part of Bethel. Part set off to Bethel on July 31, 1849.

Hartford - Settled 1783. Incorporated 13 June 1798. Previous designations: East Butterfield plus East Butterfield Slip. Part of Pl.1 annexed 1807. Part of Chandlers Gore annexed March 11, 1834. Parts set off to Canton on February 24, 1838, February 25, 1839, and on August 8, 1850. Parts set off to Buckfield on March 25, 1856 and on March 11, 1862.

Hebron - Settled 1774. Incorporated 6 March 1792. Bounds established in 1804. Previous designations: Bog Brook; Sheppardsfield; Sheppardstown; Phillips Gore. Part of Paris annexed 1818. Part set off to form Oxford February 27, 1829.

Hiram - Settled 1774. Constituted a district February 1807. Incorporated 14 June 1814. Parts of Baldwin annexed February 28, 1821 and March 7, 1844. Part of Brownfield annexed April 23, 1852.

Lincoln Plantation - Previous designation: 5R2, WBKP. Principle settlement: Wilsons Mills.

Lovell - Settled 1777. Incorporated 15 November 1800. Previous designation: New Suncook. Part set off to form Sweden Feb. 26, 1813. Principle settlements: Lovell, Center Lovell and North Lovell.

Magalloway Plantation - organized for election purposes in 1860 but formally organized for general purposes on March 5, 1883 with legislative confirmation passed in 1991. Named for the Malecite Indian word for caribou, the plantation was created from the township T5 R1 WBKP. The 93-foot Bennett Covered Bridge was built in 1901 and spans the Magalloway River near Wilson Mills. It has been closed to traffic since 1985. Located on the New Hampshire border, it fronts on Umagog Lake and Lower Richardson Lake and is served by Maine Route 16 in the remote northwest portion of the state.

Mexico - Settled 1780. Incorporated 13 February 1843. Previous designations: No. 1; Holmanstown; Dixtown. Part of Roxbury annexed on March 28, 1857. Principle settlements: Mexico, Ridlonville.

Newry - Settled 1781. Incorporated 15 June 1805. Previous designations: A No. 3; Sunday River Plantation; Bostwick. Parts of Andover West Surplus and Grafton annexed March 29, 1837. Boundary between Andover West Surplus and Newry established February 22, 1842; boundary between Grafton and Newry established same date.

Norway - Settled 1781. Incorporated 9 March 1797. Previous designation: Rustfield. Formed from Rustfield, Rusts Gore, Lee Grant, Cummings Gore, Kent Gore, and part of Waterford plantation. Phillips Gore annexed on February 5, 1821. Part of Paris annexed on March 18, 1859. Part set off to Paris on March 2, 1861.

Otisfield - Settled 1776. Incorporated 19 February 1798. Part of Cumberland County till 1978. Part set off to form part of Harrison in 1805. Part of Thompson Pond Pl. annexed March 8, 1830. Part set off to Oxford on March 17,1830. Part set off to form part of Naples on March 4, 1834. Part set off to Naples July 27, 1848. Part of Poland annexed March 20, 1858.

Oxford - Settled 1774. Set off from Hebron and incorporated 27 February 1829. See Hebron for previous designations. Part of Otisfield annexed March 17, 1830. Part of Paris annexed March 8, 1838. Principle settlements: Oxford and Welchville.

Paris - Settled 1779. Set off from Hebron and incorported 20 June 1793. Previous designation: No. 4. Part set off to Hebron in 1817. Part of Woodstock annexed February 10, 1825. Part of Buckfield annexed February 19, 1928. Part set off to Oxford on March 8, 1838. Part set off to Woodstock on March 23, 1841. Part set off to Norway March 18, 1859. Part of Norway annexed March 2, 1861. Part of Woodstock annexed on March 9, 1880. Principle settlements: Paris Hill and South Paris.

Peru - Incorporated 5 February 1821. (Settled?) Previous designations: No. 1; Partridgetown. Formed from Thompsons Grant, Foxs Grant, Lunts Upper and Lower Grants and organized March 23, 1812 as Plantation No. 1. Part set off to Rumford on February 8, 1825. Part of Canton annexed April 2, 1859. Part of Franklin annexed February 21, 1885. Part set off to Rumford on February 21, 1895. Part of Canton annexed April 12, 1895. Part of Franklin annexed February 21, 1899.

Porter - Settled 1784. Incorporated 20 February 1807. Previous designation: Porterfield. Parts set off to Brownfield on February 20, 1807 (incorporation date), February 19, 1831, February 11, 1832, and on March 17, 1855. Principle settlements: Porter and Kezar Falls.

Roxbury - Incorporated 17 March 1835. (Settled?) Previous designation: 7 AP. Part set off to Mexico on March 28, 1857. Principle settlements: Roxbury and Frye.

Rumford - Settled 1777. Incorporated 21 February 1800. Previous designation(s): New Pennacook/Pennycook/Pennecook Part of Peru annexed February 21, 1895. Part of Franklin Plantation annexed February 21, 1899. Principle settlements: Rumford, Rumford Falls, Rumford Center, Rumford Point, Rumford Corner, Virginia, and Smith Crossing. [HISTORY]

Stoneham - Incorporated 31 January 1834. (Settled?) Set off from Fryeburg Academy Grant and Batchelders Grant. Name changed to Usher, February 19, 1841. Name changed to Stoneham, March 11, 1843.

Stow - Settled 1770. Incorporated January 28, 1833. Formed from Fryeburg addition, Eastmans Grant and Bradley's Grant.

Sumner - Settled 1783. Incorported 13 June 1798. Previous designations: West Butterfield plus West Butterfield Slip. Part of Plantation 2 annexed March 20, 1838. Part of Franklin annexed February 22, 1844. Part set off to Buckfield on March 12, 1856. Part of Franklin annexed February 12, 1863.

Sweden - Settled 1784. Set off from Lovell and incorporated 26 February 1813. Previous designation: See Lovell.

Upton - Incorporated 9 February 1860. (Settled?) Previous designation: Letter B.

Waterford - Settled 1775. Incorporated 2 March 1797. Previous designation: Old No. 5. Part of Albany annexed in 1811.

West Paris - Settled 1790's. Incorporated 28 August 1957. Set off from Paris. Previous designation: See Paris. Principle settlements: West Paris, North Paris, Trap Corner.

Woodstock - Settled 1793. Incorporated 7 February 1815. Previous designations: No. 3; Gorham Academy Grant plus Little Grant and Dummer Academy Grant. Part set off to Paris on February 10, 1825. Part of Paris annexed March 23, 1841. Part of Milton annexed March 24, 1853. Hamlins Grant annexed on February 13, 1873. Part set off to Paris on March 9, 1880.
