James Cobb JOHNSON
(1866-1945)
James Cobb Johnson, a
shoemaker, was born 11 Oct 1866 in Pownal,
Cumberland County, Maine, son of Hiram and
Abigail “Abbie” L. (Henry) Johnson
(1836-1909).
The 1870 and 1880 census
records show he lived in Norway, Oxford
County, Maine, with his parents and
siblings. James became a shoemaker. The 1900 and 1910 census
shows he lived in Mechanic Falls,
Androscoggin County. The 1920 census
record shows James living in Auburn,
Androscoggin County, with his
father-in-law, Julius G. Chipman. James
and Stella are back in Mechanic Falls by
the 1930 census.
He married Cora M. Hodgdon 2
Jun 1888 in Buckfield, Oxford County,
Maine. Cora was born 8 March 1870 in
Buckfield, to Harrison (1829–1886) and
Cinderella (Damon) Hodgdon (1838–1937).
Cora died 5 Oct 1889, less than two years
after they married.
James married Stella
Delphini (Chapman) Johnson, a Mayflower
descendant, who was born 29 Sep 1868 in
Poland, Androscoggin, Maine, a daughter of
Julius Grenville
Chipman (1837-1924) and Sarah H.
(Frank) Chipman (1843-1913). Stella died
18 Apr 1942, and was buried in Mountain
View Cemetery in Auburn.
James and Stella had four
children.
1. Their first, a
son, was born 17 Jan
1893 in Auburn, Androscoggin County,
Maine; died 9 Jun
1893 of bronchial pneumonia, aged only 4
months; and was buried in Marston Corner.
2. Marion “Mollie” Elizabeth was born 22 May
1898 in Mechanic Falls, Androscoggin
County, Maine. She married Clifford Rose
Tupper (1897-1958) 11 Aug 1923, and
settled in Nassau County, New York.
3. Philip Fessenden
was born 15 Jul
1899 in Mechanic Falls. He died 20 May
1965 in Douglas County, Nebraska.
4. Ruth Irene was born 4 Sep
1906 in Mechanic Falls. She married __
Hayward. Ruth died 3 Jan 1982 in Rutland
County, Vermont. Her remains were
cremated.
James Cobb Johnson died 4
May 1945, and was buried in Evergreen
Cemetery in Auburn, Androscoggin County,
Maine.

Philip Fessenden Johnson was
born 15 Jul
1899 in Mechanic Falls, Androscoggin

to James Cobb and Stella Delphini
(Chapman) Johnson.

In 1926, Philip married
Alice Blanche Leon (1902-1996), daughter
of Charles F. and Hermina Eva (Ninger)
Leon. Philip and Alice had three children:
Richard Warren, Doris, and Robert Leon.
The 1930 census
record shows Philip and Alice living in
Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. By 1940, their
three children are also listed.
Philip F. Johnson’s 1942 WWII
Registration card shows: age 42
years, residing at 3902 Paxton Blvd.,
Omaha, with his wife, Alice. He was
employed by Jerpe Commission Company. His
physical description given as White, 5’6”
tall, 150 pounds, gray eyes, brown hair,
and ruddy complexion.
In 1950, they
are still living in Omaha.
Philip Fessenden Johnson
died 20 May 1965, in
Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, aged 65
years. He is buried in Westlawn-Hillcrest
Memorial Park in Omaha.
