Hundreds

The concept of a hundred is old and dates to the Roman occupation of England. A Hundred was said to be an area that could raise a force of 100 soldiers. However, Hundreds in Maryland seemed to primarily been used for tax collection and land rent purposes. In 1705, there were ten hundreds in St. Mary's County.

Chaptico Hundred had 37 land tracts

Newtown Hundred had 157 land tracts

Poplar Hill Hundred had 44 land tracts

Resurrection Hundred had 75 land tracts

St. Clement's Hundred had 53 land tracts

St. George's Hundred had 44 land tracts

St. Inigoes Hundred had 4 land tracts

St. Mary's Hundred had 107 land tracts

St. Michael's Hundred had 17 land tracts

This 1705 map was prepared by Russell Menard in 1971 for the St. Mary's County Historical Society, and they very generously granted permission for us to use it.
