John Wesley Church Cemetery

Libertytown, Frederick Co, Maryland

Early African-American residents who lived in the Libertytown area were buried
on a steep hillside up the street from an auto repair shop, on North St East,
off of Route 550.

Among those buried on this hillside are:

- Theodore CLAY, (dusted the stone with flour) died in 1975.

- Ellen MAYBERRY, who died in 1885 "in hope of a glorious resurrection".

- Alfred B. ROBERTS, a sergeant who fought with the United States Colored Infantry in Civil War.

- Amelia A. ROBERTS, died July 3, 1920; age 30 years, 3 months, 10 days.

- Lillian F. ROSE, who was born in 1904 and died in 1946.

- Margaret E. STANTON, who was just 3 when she died in 1886.

The church to which they belonged was shuttered long ago and the tiny one-room schoolhouse
has been turned into a private home.

McDaniel College students, under the guidance of Professor Rick Smith were working
to document gravesites.
