Slaves

Land Record Abstracts

with Slaves 1752-1863

Frederick Co, Maryland

In Frederick County, Manumissions were filed with the land records and listed as such; however, slaves were also listed in other catagories such as Sales, Mortgages and other unique titles. Jeff Duvall compiled a listing of all the Manumissions (linked on MidMdRoots website), but the other records are not as easily found. These are some accidently found while doing other research.

Manumissions - One might think this was a legal paper providing proof of freedom upon a slave being released from bondage and this was the case for a few of them; however, most of them provided a future date of being released by a date or age. Surprisingly, a few were released upon becoming of age (females at 18 and males at 21), but most were much longer. It seems most of these were recorded soon after obtaining the slaves and served more as a "Certificate of Ownership" for the owner's benefit. In fact, one was found listed as such. Some of these records were listed in the index under the owner's surname and some under the slave's surname, while others, having no surname, were listed under "Negro or Negroes".

These Abstracts are listed alphabetically by the owner's surname.
