Anne Arundel County was founded 1650 Apr 09. The area was originally part of St.
Mary's County. Between 1654 and 1658, the county was known as "Providence" by
many of its early settlers. Anne Arundel County lost a portion of land to form
Howard County in 1851.
The county was named in honor of Lady Anne
Arundell, the wife of Cecilius Calvert, founder and first lord proprietor of the
colony Province of Maryland.
