Descendants of Nicholas GASSAWAY

Nicholas Gassaway apparently was brought to Lower Norfolk Co. VA as a servant of Richard Owens between 1643 and 1649. In 1649 He came to Anne Arundel County (then known as Providence) as the servant of Richard Owens. This can be proven through the land records and recording of "headrights".

According to Liber R336, folio 506 of the Land Grant Office a Richard Owens transported himself & Nicholas Gassaway in 1649 to MD, Mary (the widow of William Edwards) his wife in 1650, and John Wilkerson, Benjamin Glover, and John Walker between 1652 and 1659.

In the Court Order Book B of Lower Norfolk Co., Virginia There is a headright grant dated 15 August 1650 where: Certificate for Richard Owens for 300 Acres of land for transportacon of himselfe, Mary, his wife and four servants vtiz: Milka(?) Huffy, Nicholas ___sseway [sic. Gassaway, no doubt], Henry Hills and Thomas Roper. Then Thomas Greene grant of 270 acress in Elizabeth River upon head of Loyds Creek bounded form the great swamp NW by W &c 11 Jan 1652 (patent book 3, p. 145) Trans. Of 4 persons: Richard Owens, his wife, Milkey Hussey, Nicho. Casseway, Henry Hills, Thomas Rope, By assignment from Richd. Owens. (See Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers I, p. 268)

From Lower Norfolk Co VA Court Order Book: of 17 July 1643 "It is ordered that Richard Owen who married Marie ye relict of Will: Edwards, deceased, shall have an attachment agaynst ye estate of Tho: Sawyer for soe much as shall satisfie a debt of 10ï¿½ Sterling due fron ye sd. Sawyer to ye sd. Marie Edwards."
In book B of Lower Norfolk Co Court Records: 2 Nov 1646: Whearas Thomas Edwards late of the Colony, deceased, dyeing intestate leaving estate in diverse goods, rights, and debts whereof Richard Owens hath made humble suite administration might be granted unto Richard Owens to bring a true and just account of the remaynder of the said estate 10 May 1645/6. Then on 15 Dec 1645 "The Adminsitration of the estate of and belonging unto Thomas Edwards late deceased is granted unto Richard Owens whoe is father in lawe to the said deceased & giving security to the Court."

From the above it seems that Richard Owens married Mary (widow of William Edwards) before 1643 and likely had gone to England with her and returned to Virginia, bringing along Nicholas Gassaway between 1643 and 1649.
