My Father, Von Toble Shelton

Von Toble Shelton was born May 4 1914 in Henderson County KY to J Z Shelton and Zula Farmer Shelton.

His grand parents were General Winfield Scott Shelton and Annie McMullin Shelton and David Thomas "Tom" Farmer and Sarah Sally Epley Farmer.

Von Toble Shelton first appears on the scene in the 1920 census of Webster County when he was four years old.

He served in the US Army from 1936 to 1946 and received an honorable discharge.

Von Toble Shelton was married first to Martha Dodrill; they divorced and he married Rebecca "Beckie" Pruitt July 1, 1946 in Indianapolis IN. He was baptised 11 Dec 1955 in the Christian Church in Henderson KY by Bro. George Swann.

Von Toble owned a farm in Bowling Green (Clay County) IN, having bought it after the war, then sold the farm and moved back to his homeplace in Sebree, KY on the Green River that bordered with Deer Creek. He bought this homeplace of 32 acres from his dad J Z Shelton and another 55 acres from his dad later on. In 1964 he sold the farms and moved to 117 Webster Street, Sebree, Ky. These farms were sold to Pittsburg Coal Company.

Von was a deacon in the Sebree First Christian Church for many years. He owned and operated the Midget Market after 1965 in Sebree KY. He had worked for Iley B. Browning Oil Company as a pumper prior to that.

He was described as a good-looking man with dark hair and brown eyes; he was 5'8" tall and weighed about 220. He received his Masonic Degree in Onton Bailey Lodge in Sebree, Ky. He was listed as having an 8th grade education. He was named after the musician, Harry Vontoble from Henderson KY.

Von Toble and Rebecca Shelton had two children - Vonette Jean Shelton, born in 1947 and Von Toble Shelton, Jr., who was born in 1951 in died in an accident in 1974. Rebecca had a son by a previous marriage to John Henley and he was 12 years older than Vonette Jean. His name was Don L Henley.

Von was a excellent cook, having been a cook in the military. His barbeque was out of this world. People would come from all around when he barbequed on the Fourth of July at the Midget Market or any other times. He also knew how to fry fish out of doors and it was delicious. He caught many large fish on the Green River in his day. He taught me how to make biscuits, pies, along with frying fish and how to barbeque.

Von and Rebecca divorced on 12 July 1975 after thirty-nine years of marriage. The death of their son, Von Toble Shelton, Jr. was a contributing factor in their divorce. There was a disagreement as to where Von was to be buried as he had married a third time to Stella Sallee, and she wanted him near her but Von had already purchased a lot and stone with his name on it with Rebecca and his parents and family at Springdale Cemetery in Sebree. However, his wife at the time of his death had the choice and she buried Von in an alley next to her family. Now this is unique!. He has two stones with his name and death date on it in the Springdale Cemetery. In the future interested persons may wonder why his name is on two stones? So now you know!

His ancestry is: J Z Shelton, General Winfield Scott Shelton, Lucinda Shelton, Josiah Cyrus Shelton, John Shelton and Willliam Shelton of Dan River North Carolina.

Von Toble Shelton signed his will on Jan 7, 1979 in Sebree, Ky and died 24 of March 1986.

There are many photos of Von Toble Shelton and his family online.
