Biography of J Z Shelton and Zula Farmer Shelton
J Z Shelton was born Sept 24, 1889 at home on College Street (Hwy. 41) in Sebree KY and died Apr 20, 1989 in Evansville IN.
He was the son of General Winfield Scott Shelton and Annie McMullin. He married Zula Farmer, the daughter of Tom Farmer and Sally Epley, born Sept 7, 1889 at Beech Grove in McLean County KY, died July 22, 1973. J Z and Zula are both buried at Springdale Cemetery in Sebree KY. J Z Shelton was the 6th son of a family of nine children. He was given a complete education and was the most mannerly man I have ever been around in my life. He was a farmer, policeman, and a carpenter. He did bootlegging on the Green River. He led a quite colorful life and had many experiences. He was very distant to all his grandchildren. But Grandma Zula always made up for J Z's distance. I was Grandma's favorite grandchild until she moved to Evansville in the middle 1970's and then Norwanda, Wanda's daughter became her favorite as she was so good to Grandma Zula. I always received two pieces of candy to my brother's one and she would give me a quarter and him a dime. Grandma Zula loved cats and always had one. She was very plain spoken and told you up front what she was thinking. She loved to visit people and enjoyed her neighbors and friends. She was a very friendly person. Grandma would peek into my mother's pots on the stove when she was cooking and this made my mother mad! After all Grandma was her mother-in-law. Grandma Zula thought *her* mother-in-law, Annie McMullin was nosey. So when Grandma Zula wanted to know something she would always say, "Annie wants to know." She visited and kept me as a child when I was small. I loved my Grandma Zula. She called me "The Little Girl" or Vonjanet. Children of J Z and Zula Shelton were:
