Rice was born on 16 Jan 1825, according to an entry in his uncle Edward Rice's bible. Thomas lived next to his uncle and was quite close to him. Thomas was apparently alive in 1859, when his daughter Helen was born. However, he is deceased by 1860 and is not in the 1860 mortality schedule. (Presumably, he died in 1859.) His widow married E.
