Thomas Poindexter, Sr., son of John Poindexter and Lucy Christian Poindexter, was born about 1730 in Louisa County, Virginia. Thomas and Lucy Jones Poindexter were parents of ten children; Gabriel, born 1758, Thomas, born 1760 married Sally Ragland, John, born 1766 married Elizabeth Thornton, Robert, born December 22, 1776, George, born 1779, James, Richard Jones, Lucy , Elizabeth married Christopher Cammack, and Molly married Garland Cosby. Thomas came to Fayette County and is listed on the tax list for February 1790.  He was in Franklin County in 1795, where he is listed on the tax list. Thomas Poindexter died in Franklin County, Kentucky before December 12, 1796.  His will was written on July 15, 1795 and sent to probate December 20, 1796 and is recorded in will book 1, page 7.

There is much controversy concerning the parentage of Lucy Jones, wife of Thomas Poindexter  One record says they married about 1751 in Louisa County, Virginia and she was the daugher of * Captain Gabriel Jones and Margaret Strother.

* Alex Luken states Lucy Jones was the daughter of Gabriel Jones and Mary Edmonson.  She had sisters Dorothy Jones, who married Benjamin Johnston and Elizabeth Jones, who married James Green.  Alex also states Gabriel Jones, who married Margaret Strother was the son of a John Jones and Gabriel Jones, who married Mary Edmonson was the son of Richard Jones.

* Barb Petty also states Lucy Jones was the daughter of Gabriel Jones, of Culpper, who married Mary Johnston Edmondson, widow of John Edmondson. She states this marriage took place in either Essex or Orange County, Virginia. Barb further states this relationship is proven by two different documents.  One a deed for negroes owned by Mrs. Edmondson, which were being distributed by Thomas Wiatt/Wyatt, her son in law who married her daughter, by her first marriage, Susannah "Sukey" Edmondson, to her children of her second marriage.  One of whom was Lucy and another was Gabriel, Jr.
Gabriel Jones, Jr. was Captain Gabriel, who is said to have died of wounds he received during the Revolutionary War.  He made a will which named his daughter by a first marriage and his children of his second marriage.  If his children should die, his will was that his estate be distributed to his sisters, whom he named by their married names.  One was Lucy Poindexter.

Gabriel Poindexter, son of Thomas and Lucy Jones Poindexter, was in Franklin County, by 1797 with his wife Mary Swift Poindexter.  Tax records indicate Gabriel had land on Elkhorn. He migrated to Indiana and is on the 1820 census for Floyd County.  Three daughters, married in Franklin County, Kentucky
